Yes! Every store has its own credit card and is always offering you discounts if you open the credit card. That’s how I got sucked in. I had credit cards to Sephora, ULTA, Nordstrom, etc. ALL for that special discount. 🤦‍♀️

I just went no buy on perfume only to replace it with makeup addiction. I’ve been going out of my budget on makeup and finding myself taking money out of my savings which is sad. Sometimes hearing stories like this is just what I need to ground myself and know that I don’t really need that makeup. Thank you for sharing this!

Makeup is fun but my advice is really stick to the things that always work for you. That one foundation. That one blush. I really feel like quality is so low now that if you find something that works for you, stick to it, pan it, and repurchase when it's empty. I even go out of my way to find the concealer online I used in 2007... Idc... Or I go back down in the rabbit hole of trying too many new things to find a replacement, even dupes have cost me a lot. Just so you know, online shops like Douglas allow you to do returns. So say you see a liquid lipstick in real life and you open it, you can estimate if the shade is really for you and you can return it. It's a bit of a hastle to prepare the return but the feeling of getting the money back is so good.

Thank you for this. I track my budget every month and I just went back to look at my 'beauty" spending 4 years back and I am embarrassed to see how much I spent on it. As you said it is never to late to start.

Greetings from California. I am a former shopping addict. My addiction began when I was 12 and ended by the time I was 20. I have been in recovery for years. It's an impulse control disorder, according to my psychiatrist. I have a genetic predisposition to it. Makeup was one of the things I had too much of. I had a large drawer full of cosmetics. Now, all my cosmetics fit into a small bag.

some parts of this video genuinely made me tear up because i related to what you said so much. i'm glad there's someone out there that recognizes this as a real addiction, because i've always felt like that's what i've been experiencing for YEARS. and if you can break it, so can i. 🥺

Yesss! I absolutely love this video. I’m a professional makeup artist and I’m in the middle of condensing my kit, and going around looking for inspos. And I just kept thinking, a lot of these MUAs are extremely excessive! They justify their purchase by saying, "it’s for my kit” or "just in case I get those clients." But tbh, even for a MUA, it’s just overkill. I have a good amount of makeup but it doesn’t even compare to these other MUAs’ collection and I’m here thinking I have too much. Quite sad to think how much money is wasted just to have all that makeup be shoved in the back of a drawer. But I’m happy for you for turning your spending habit around, thank you for being so transparent! ❤️ We definitely need more people like you! Especially in this industry.

Definitely been trying to get away from buying so much makeup. I'm on a low buy right now, because I know myself and I can't quit cold turkey. I'm hoping seeing how much money I save throughout the year, I will be way more persuaded to stop. But thank you for sharing. 😊

Keep a spreadsheet because it is very easy to underestimate how much you spend on beauty. I did the math and I have already spent € 1500 on cosmetics this year. I have to stop again trying new things like I did in 2020 or I will end up like the years before where I spent € 4000 easy per year just on some cosmetics I dont even like.

Two things that will curb your shopping. Get a color analysis done it took me a while to figure out how to incorporate that to my makeup but now that I have I'm astounded at how much I have that doesn't not suit me at all. And the second thing is do a no buy. This has been so beneficial to me and I'm continuing it for the rest of the year.

I agree with everyone's comments to stop watching KZbin/ Instagram makeup tutorials as this encourages spending. A helpful tip is to keep a bag of "empties" of makeup, skin care & hair care products for a whole year to see what you actually use up.

We were all buying like influensers, but we were not getting paid like influencers. I'm embarrassed because the money I spent on makeup I could have put a good chunk on a mortgage or pay back our credit card. 😢

Same! I have lost so much unnecessary money within 4 years even though I am student, in debt from my tuition and broke. I have deep regrets now and wish I had not gotten all those things. I desperately need those 5k now and they are all gone on random crap that ultimately didn’t make me any happier. Quite the opposite: now I‘m freaking out about my finances because the money spent would have offered me a comfortable amount in savings to not worry much about things.

Absolutely love the honesty and transparency ❤️ my makeup fits in 2 large cases, one medium and small. I want to do a whole no buy year, I got the new Sweet Tarte Cravings and now put myself on a no buy! I want to buy a home in 3-5 years. I need to get ahold of my spending!

I stopped buying so much once I did my accounting for my business and saw that I was breaking even because I was forever buying products into my kit.

It’s so frustrating for me because of social media. Tik tok especially is just constantly attractive girls showing me new makeup products, new clothes, telling me I need xyz etc. i can’t go on there without buying something, and the algorithm knows that so it won’t take it off of my fyp. What I’ve done to help is unfollowing all fashion/ product review accounts- it sucks but the mass consumerism they’re promoting isn’t helping us. I know myself well enough to know that seeing a haul video is going to make me purchase so all I can do is try to remove those triggers. I still see stuff on my fyp but the second a “buy this” or you “you need this” type text comes up I instantly scroll past it

I have a makeup addiction and luckily I stopped buying because I became allergic to eyeshadow. I still can wear some eyeshadow from specific brands but I can't from most. I can't believe I spent so much money on makeup; especially eyeshadow palettes. I gave them all away to friends and family. I am a chronic pain sufferer so I haven't worked in almost three years and I was barely using makeup so I have no excuse for accumulating so much. I consider myself lucky I developed an allergy to eye makeup so that I was forced to stop spending money; money i really didn't have to spend. I do collect tarot cards and books and I have to constantly check myself so that I don't end up in a similar situation. Unfortunately my story and your story is commonplace for so many people. KZbin and social media in general pushes consumerism and creates a fomo environment with almost anything that can be collected.

Oh man this is the second time I did this this week!! I accidentally hit the dislike button instead of the like 😫!! I fixed it though. 💕🤸🏻‍♀️Great video and super important!! I too had a massive addiction to makeup. Even though I wasn’t purchasing all the time, I was mentally consumed by it and found myself spending hours upon hours watching makeup videos, shopping for makeup (even if I didn’t buy it). I’m thankful God woke me up and I have a much healthier view on it now. I still love the artistry of it, but just don’t feel obsessed at all like I did before. Everyone needs to toss their mascara after 6 months, according to an ophthalmologist. Bacteria builds up on mascara. Buy cosmetics in small amounts because bacteria does develop in all makeup.

I can afford it and I dont buy much, but I buy expensive stuff that I cant even test cause it's online, and then I don't like it and I'm stuck with a € 70 lipstick for nothing. That is a short day of work. I have this thing where I will tell myself I will only buy my favourites that I use up. But then it gets discontinued and I start on and endless quest again for a lipstick color that works for me. I feel like these makeup brands are actually creating shades that look and feel slightly bad for everyone (for example Mac lipsticks always look too purple and Guerlain looks too warm and red), so that we all stay in this desperate search for a shade or texture that feels good. It needs to be studied why in the early 2000s I looked good with every shade and texture and now everything is too warm and matte, velvet. Or are the brands only focusing on an arab public or something? I cant even find a nice cool toned bright eye palette. These brands know what they're doing. Well I am not having it anymore. I found a way to test lipsticks I order online without making them look used to I can return them... That'll teach them, trying to scam me.
