Hi my 13yr old Poodle over the past two winters in NZ has started this dry cough, it looks like she is trying to bring something up but there is nothing. She lives in a non smoking house and environmentally friendly home. Renee's hearing has diminished over the past few years but can hear high pitched noises which now give her a fright. Her eye's are getting the milky look but can still manage to watch TV and see any cats or dogs that appear on TV and bark to her delight. The coughing only happens when she has run after her ball which she still has a lot of energy to do but only a few times now and gets to her ball and stops to have the cough, picks up the ball and returns but ducks off into the house and coughs some more. I have had Poodles since I was 8 yrs and not come across this before. The first Poodle I had was in OZ and she lived to a great age of 19yrs I have lost Renee's older non biological sister Satine over 3 yrs ago now, due to medical complications. Of course but only after diagnosis since there may be other issues such as HW or CHF in addition to TC or bacterial&viratical diseases. Most of the time , we get mistaken whether we shall use a decongestant, exosperant or cough suppresants which even can make things worse if the mucus shall be cleared . So just had a question I took my year old shar pei just for his basic yearly vaccines a couple days ago and I asked the vet if they could see what my dods cough could be caused by he only coughs every now and then in a day my thought was tracheal collapse I asked the vet if they could look into this they said oh we looked at your dogs heart and lungs all sounds good but they said they think my Shar-Pei is overweight hes only 55 pounds and to just feed him less he only receives 2 small scoops in total spred into 2 meals in a day and half the time he doesn't even eat it all from what Ive been reading a standard shar pei weight is 55 to 65 so I thought his weight was good. My question does 55 pound seem like a reasonable weight and can weight affect the possibl of tracheal collapse if my dog has it?

My 10 year old pointer lab mix was diagnosed with heart worms about 3 months ago, the vet gave use pills for the cough, antibiotics, and advantage multi drops and told us to double the dose of the advantage drops and cough meds. The cough meds worked well until we ran out and the cough came right back and has gotten worse. The drops have eliminated our flea problem but there's no way to tell if it's helped with the heart worms. The vet told us it was an experimental treatment for the worms since it was a cheaper option and we could not afford the proven remedy. I am supposed to take him in agai. To get a refill on the drops but I'm not sure if the vet is being genuine with me or just looking for a return customer. Maybe I'm paranoid but I worry that the advantage drops are not helping the heart worms and I don't want to have my pup on an endless supply of pills for the cough. Any advice?

The advantage drops is also for heartworms. The cough is from heartworm overload. Heartworms will kill your dog. The best you can do is kill off the existing worms w this method so it doesnt worsen and keep treating.This doesnt kill the larvae. Takes 2 yrs min. It takes 1 mosquito to give your dog heartworms. All dogs need to be on mthly heartworm prevention. You are not treating the cough separately! Putting this out there for others. I hope your dog is ok. Im not promoting advantage particularly as I havent researched advantage. I am promoting heartworm prevention. Yes its possible heartworms can be treated successfully w heartworm prev meds

Hi Dr. I have written to you a few times because my dog have a cough that just started out of no were I took him to the vet and they did all kinds of testing and told me he was fine but he kept with the cough they gave me the same antibiotics and medication over until I said no more you need to change it nothing but cough is getting and my Chucho is only 3lb his a chihuahua toy now I'm really worried and don't have another $1,000 to spend at the vet.
