If you are making your dog's food at home, ensure that you add these ingredients to have a balanced and healthy Dog Food Recipe.
KEY POINTS for Homemade Dog Food Diets
In general, for dogs stick to the macronutrients of 1/3 animal protein, 1/3 healthy carbohydrate ( ie sweet potato), 1/3 veggies ( ie kale or spinach), Fat in the form of Sunflower oil/Coconut oil, Fiber in the form of Ground Flax, plus a calcium supplement ( ground eggshell).
1. Focus on the Protein with balanced amino acid profiles (lean beef, chicken, turkey and egg)
2. The Carbohydrates are not necessary, but the ‘non’ grain carbs provide additional nutrients: Brown rice (fiber, protein, Calcium, Iron, Selenium and B vitamins), Sweet Potato ( Fiber, Protein, Vitamin A,C,E, Potassium and B vitamins), Potato (Potassium, Vitamin C, B vitamins)
3. Additional ‘balanced’ fat is necessary, a good Omega 6:3 balanced, nutritious fat I prefer is sunflower oil, but can also use Coconut oil.
4. Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplement should be added in the form of Krill, Fish or Flax oil. Krill is the most nutrient dense and beneficial of all the products., with a great EPA/DHA fatty acid profile, contains the antioxidant Astaxanthin, and being high in Vitamin D.
5. Calcium is required as bones are not being consumed. I prefer Egg Shells : dried, roasted in the oven for 10 mins, then ground with a coffee grinder. You can also use OTC calcium carbonate.
6. Vitamins: Vitamin D is needed, but is in the egg yolks and red meat as well as being in high levels in the Krill or Fish oil. Vitamin E is in the Sunflower Oil and Coconut Oil
7. Minerals: Iron is in the animal protein and spinach/kale, Zinc is in the red meat and flax seeds, Copper is in the spinach, Iodine is on the Egg Yolks, Potassium is in the Sweet Potato and Regular Potato
8. Fiber: the veggies, the brown rice and the best source in my opinion (also the healthiest) is the ground flax.

Hi! I was wondering if it's okay to feed your dog a mixture of kibble and homemade (and even raw) food for cost efficiency but to still reap the benefits of the better food. My dog has chronic skin allergies - thank you for making these videos!

Hello Dr Jones, - How much would you feed a 75 lb dog of this per day? It sounds great, but I want to make sure I don't under/over feed. - Also, what are your thoughts on taurine? It's importance and if supplementation is needed. Thank you!!!

@@nicoleyap6070 As she was getting older I fed her a (hopefully) low phosphorus quality protein diet. No dry food as it is hard on kidneys. 2 c rice, cooked (I used white as is said to be lower phosphorus) 2 lb 96% lean hamburger 1 lg yam 1 lb green beans 1 can 100% pumpkin 1/2;cup finely chopped parsley or kale 12 - 14 egg whites 1 lg Apple (May add a few cooked small carrots, a few raw blueberries) Yam, green beans (and carrot if added to recipe) are pressure cooked and puréed. Apple is finely chopped in food processor and added raw. Mix all ingredients well. Tally’s diet was 1/4 cup recipe above + 1/4 cup science diet science diet kidney care, mixed together and fed twice daily. My new JRT pup (7mos) is getting the same, but I will be feeding her a high quality canned food instead of the kidney care (I still have several cans of the kidney care left over from Tally). Both dogs full-grown are 15 lbs. I take the big vat of the prepared recipe and measure out 1/4 cup servings on a cookie sheet and freeze. It makes about 3 weeks worth of food. It’s a chore but worth it for a healthy and well-loved dog. I thaw the next days 2 meals the night before in the fridge. The recipe must be frozen within 2 -3 days.

Hi that sounds like a great diet, I’m curious how much carbs did you give your dog when it was younger, as in what percentage of the diet was carbs and did you give your dog any fat? My Boston is so lean and we try to give him homemade food but I think he needs some extra calories, so I’m wondering if home diets also include dietary fats in the mix. Thank you

Thank you for this outstanding video and recipe. Since I have been using this recipe, my 18 month old miniature schnoodle has firm, healthy stools for the first time in his life. I am truly grateful for your expertise! Instead of ground turkey, I am purchasing whole turkeys when they are on sale. I roast them in the oven, take the meat off the bone, cut it in bite-size pieces, and package it in one pound increments in the freezer. I do the same thing with the sweet potatoes and spinach. I cook them ahead and have them in portioned containers in the freezer. I also make the eggshell powder in advance. This makes it very easy when I need to make a new batch of food. All I have to do is reach in the freezer, take out the portioned containers, thaw them, scramble 2 eggs, and assemble. Easy-peasy! Thanks again!

This is Dr. Jones' recipe: 1 lb meat (I use turkey and sometimes add lean ground beef. You could also use chicken.), 1 cup of cooked sweet potato (or carrots), 1 cup of steamed spinach (or kale or swiss chard or zuchini), 2 scrambled eggs, 1 tablespoon of sunflower or coconut oil, 1/2 teaspoon of ground egg shell. (As I use eggs, I save the shells until I have a dozen. I rinse the egg shells thoroughly, place them on a cookie sheet, and bake them in the oven at 200 degrees for approximately 15 - 20 minutes. After the egg shells cool, I put them in a coffee grinder/food processor/blender to make a powder. I store the powder in an airtight container and use as needed to provide a calcium supplement to the food I make.) @@tazio2

And pepper!, also when using Tuna, which my dog loves, you gotta go for the Tuna in Olive Oil only, it costs more but it's not salted nor does it have any Preservatives, which store brand Flake Tuna does, as it's usually bought in bulk once it's too old for the quality control guidelines from Honest Good Companies, I use "Trace Your Catch" Oceans Skipjack in Olive Oil, it's just lil half sized Can with Pull-off Tinfoil Covers and is made from Plain Tuna and EVO and much better. Also 75-90% Cooked White Rice that is still mildly hard but easily edible is amazing and helps pull toxins from the belly, like Dry White Rice pulls the water from your phone that's spent a night fully submerged in a puddle outside your house and 24 hours later you got your "Life" back. My dog loves hamburger and White rice and carrots, but the way I make my dogs food is I also make sure it's 50% Traditional Decent Grade Kibble so they get all the nutrients I can't provide, and sometimes I only add burger, chicken, or Tuna to her meal once a day. Same goes for a table spoon of lil chopped carrots, and a Table Spoon of Canned Peas that I salt rinse in a small handheld strainer with Hot Water. As for her Water I have four 6 litre Water Jugs that I let sit in my sunny front window or outside in summer for 48-72hours for Reverse Osmosis, to take the Bleach, Chlorine, Florida, and as much of the Liquid Plastics, Teflon, Forever Chemicals, Drugs, and probly hundreds of different things we have no clue about. And last year the Spray Planes didn't spray during the day, they would start when it was getting dark and hit organic fields and everything that ppl didn't want sprayed... I told ppl about it and all I got was "your a paranoid freak" or "Conspiracy Theorist" or "it's too hot for them during the day", well last years vegetable harvest in Southern Alberta, Canada was insane, Super Veggies 2-5× the size they use to be and potatoes and carrots that had 1 or more entire potatoe growing from 1 huge freaking starfish looking 3-8lb potatoes or huge wierd shaped carrots growing their own huge "carrot farms" on each single mega carrot.... and farm animals getting sick from eating on grazed grass that shouldn't be sprayed or touched.

I add finely diced potato, carrot and broccoli and spoon it over a grain free holistic turkey sweet potato kibble. The combo gives her healthy BM.....and she loves the combo. Lately I have been canning her soft food. I wish I had done this long ago because I never knew she had digestive issues. Another great video!! Thank you! As a dog rescuer, my job is to restore health to malnurished and starved dogs. Greens sound good, but not all are created equal. Spinach and kale have a high amount of the antinutrient- lectin. Lectin is a major cause of leaky gut. Also, very difficult on the digestive system. To reduce harmful lectins, Spinach and kale should be cooked separately with water discarded. Best to cook again in fresh water, then discard water again. Instead, I use arugala, broccoli, asparagus, and green beans. My fav is broccoli because it is cruciferous and kills cancer cells. Also, check out adding Moringa Oliefera....a super food used in starving nations to building health.

Thanks Doc, exactly what I was looking for. I think we grow up thinking commercial dry kibble is a good thing but my miniature poodle had diarrhea for years, poor guy would sometimes lay in his bed and cry because his stomach hurt so bad. I kept taking him to the vet and they would give him meds and say a bland diet of white rice and lean meat. His breath was also horrible even after having his teeth cleaned. I finally realized that commercial dog foods were literally killing him. So I always make my own dog foods now. Wet and dry and they love it and I feel good knowing they’re not ingesting poison commercial dog foods. It’s more work but I love knowing I’m doing the right thing for my pets. 🐷 I have recently taken my pug off dry dog food, I would try to get him something decent without having to break my wallet (was getting purina one small bites), but he was sooooo picky and would often leave half of it untouched (would give him a full cup). But now, I have been boiling baby carrots, sweet potato and peas together until tender enough to mash with a potato masher. Then I take a skillet to the ground turkey, drain and dump it into the mashed pot, mix it all up together and then baggie it up in sandwhich bags 1 cup in each. I then freeze them, which I can successfully make about a weeks worth. I have started grinding up eggshells with a coffee grinder-- and I also put a teaspoon of flax oil. Mix it in well prior to serving-- he never leaves any food left anymore 💚 if anything, he's started to stand up on his hind legs and does a happy dance everytime I walk over with his bowl made of love 🥰

Hi! Have you noticed any positive changes in your dog after feeding them this diet? Do you always use this same recipe or do you change it up? I really want to try this with my dog but I don't know if it's ok to keep feeding him the same recipe over and over. I have been trying to find multiple recipes like this one that are balanced and vet approved so I can feed my fur child a nice balance throughout the week. I would also be cooking everything and not feeding it to him raw.

You may want to consider using a slower method of cooking to retain more nutrients. I cook my dogs food in a crock pot or large electric roaster on the lowest settings. My dogs live well beyond 15 years. My 17 year old pomeranian agrees...😉 Another of my furbabies....at the age of 20, my shih tzu began having seizures after a fall. We put her to sleep after a child let her onto the porch where she fell off. Otherwise she was still going strong. 😪😪

Ok, so the ingredients all get cooked? I thought the recommendation for the kale was to steam it, and extrapolated from that that it gets added to the meat, which is left raw. I was also under the impression that heat degrades the nutrients in egg yolks, so a 20 minute cooking time would pretty much destroy value of the egg.

@kateajurors8640
@kateajurors8640 3 жыл бұрын
@@kassyy1995 so for example I have a dog that weighs 75 lb I need to feed her 1.5% of her body weight so what I do is I take 75 and I multiply it by 0.015. this is just changing the percent into a decimal number that we can work with doing math. 75×.015=1.125 Or 1 1/8 There are 16 oz per pound these are all going to be impound because I use the 75 lb as the base. So 1 lb and 1/8 is essentially 1 lb 2 ounces. You're starting point if you had a 75 lb dog. So you need to feed them about 1 lb and 2 oz of food a day from a homemade food or raw food diet for your starting point and go up from there.
@kateajurors8640
@kateajurors8640 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlasmith5112 can't just do cups. When it's a homemade food or a raw food diet you can't just scoop up cups. You need to weigh the animal and you need to weigh the food portions. I just broke it down for someone else on the math. I know the difference between a 50 lb dog and a 20 lb puppy? You do realize that puppies will actually eat more during their growing phases sometimes more than even when they're an adult dog. Of course it depends on how much work or what have you that you're doing but in general most people just have pets not working animals and puppies can eat quite a bit. But it's not just what they can eat it's if you're making sure they get the nutrients that a puppy a growing puppy needs. A lot of people forget certain oils and forget certain nutrients that puppies benefit from a great deal or that allows them to develop properly without growing hip dysplasia. Mainly in larger dogs for the hip dysplasia thing but between 5 and 10 months old is the time period where you can actually have preventative measures for hip dysplasia food wise and hopefully development wise. The biggest thing with puppies is you're probably going to feed them the higher percentage and let them eat what will fill them up. If they start to get a little chunky then pull back the food portions a bit. It's actually healthy once they're an adult dog too fast them once or twice a week. That means to not feed them one or two days out of the week especially if you're feeding them the higher percentage. This is especially beneficial to dogs like Dalmatians which have kidney problems in general. Because during those days they're not taking in any protein making sure they drink or have small amounts of a creamy gravy like food treat that you've made up. But this allows their body to kind of break from processing protein. Also of course with protein and kidney problems making sure that there is ample water and encouraging them to drink more water is always beneficial.

I make my dog raw keto food daily. Itʻs a bit over a pound of ground beef, an egg, half a tin of sardines, an ounce of liver (as often as possible) for the B vitamins, ground flax, ground sprouted pumpkin seeds (keeps the parasites cleaned out), a little cod liver oil (I eat actual cod livers and drain out and keep the oil for his food), 3 ounces of green leafies blended in the VitaMix plus half an eggshell, four cranberries and 10 blueberries. Supplements are half a teaspoon of chia seeds, a tablespoon of seaweed, half a teaspoon of ginger, a fourth teaspoon of pink salt. Now and then he gets a raw (frozen) bone. I fix this recipe and give half of it to him per feeding.

I am on my 3rd dog now and he is a 2 year old GSD. When you make your own food it is not hard. My Mom fed our dogs that we had as kids this way. They were robust and healthy. Ultimately I think raw is the best and more natural but not always easy for folks. I travel and camp alot with my pup and having something ready to go is good. he does not move well between cooked and raw although he does get some choice raw as treats, like his bones and some steak.

Dr. Jones, I was going to order your supplement but seen that you as every dog food manufactures & organic dog food makers. put Sodium Selenite in their products. It is a derivative from LYE & is Toxic, it builds up after years of use. Selenium is a must have both for humans as well as animals. A natural source is Selenomethionine: Selenomethionine is an amino acid that contains selenium. It exists in two forms known as enantiomers, including L-selenomethionine and D-selenomethionine. L-selenomethionine is biologically active in humans and many other life forms. I have a very sick dog & have done a lot of research for what food to feed him. I would like your input on this, for I am still researching on it. But from my reading, sodium Selenite is not good for animals or humans. I appreciate all the info you share with all of us, I live in North Idaho & there is NO Holistic Vets here. You have saved not only a lot of vet bills but many pets lives. Thank You, & God Bless

Great video Dr. Jones. I cook for my 2 Yorkies with real fresh ingredients (actually all of what you listed with alternate proteins such as turkey, organic chicken, steak, lamb, beef organ meats). My little girl (12 1/2 years old) developed a liver infection that had her in hospital for a week. She is home now and on antibiotics and back to her feisty self. The specialist said that she might have Cushings and she has test coming up with her new holistic vet. Can you do a video for a diet addressing Cushings.
