This makes a lot of sense! A back surgeon that left the field because he says surgery may not be the answer has a KZbin channel Goobie and Doobie. He says you can heal your back many times better than a back surgery can. His videos are mostly introspective but he has a few dedicated to the advice he would give his patients who would listen. He noticed they healed on their own. He quit his neurosurgery position after 10 yrs because he said many patients did not improve with surgery but the hospitals have incentive for more surgery.

The other issue with why patients backs may not heal after surgery, is that many patients don't follow doctors orders. Many patients also assume that because they had the surgery that they'll be fine and they go back to the lifestyle and everything they were doing prior to surgery, at least they try to anyways. Many patients tend to be lazy, wanting a quick fix, and are not willing to put in the work. Any injury or issue with the body that surrounds nerves and muscles take time to heal, but with the right follow up and exercises. Of course I'm not saying the supplies to everybody who doesn't have a positive outcome from back surgery, but more of a general statement. Regardless, back surgery doesn't work out for a lot of people in general because it can be hit or miss.

@kzigmant I agree. Unfortunately, I had a surgery c3-c7 at age 30. Due to past injuries. I was a cheerleader, gymnast, and skydiver. They believe it compiled over time, and one wrong movement caused the rupture. I now have lower back pain. But not because I'm lazy, nor because I didn't change lifestyle, nor because I didn't follow doctors orders. When you parts of the spine with no give, no movement it tends to put pressure on the remaining joints of the spine. There are people out there who do everything right and this still happens to.

I would love to get Brendan's take on the 'Superman' exercise for those who don’t have equipment at home. You lie face down on the ground with your arms extended in front of you, and then you lift your arms and legs off the ground simultaneously. It really targets your lower back, glutes, and shoulders. This exercise is a part of my workout program, and it has helped improve my posture and prevent injuries. It’s especially beneficial for those who sit at a desk all day.

I found a 10 minute exercise set here on YT that incorporates Superman and similar exercises that target the lower back. I try to do it at least once a week, hopefully twice, and it has helped a lot. If anyone reading this wants to try the workout, type in "Emi Wong Sexy Back". I've also added plank and plank-based exercises that strengthen the core. It all helps.

I'm so happy that you are touching on this subject! In my younger years, I was addicted to working out, even into my 40s. I've had lower back pain for many years now. My sciatica has given me grief a few times. It always takes 2 weeks to finally feel better so I can walk normal again. For the past 5 years, I've been working from home everyday. I tend to get up less while working from home because I become so engrossed in my work. Not to mention what I do is time sensitive and critical. So, there's not a lot of time to be able to get up and move around. With that said, I have started working out again this past month. I'm 52 now. I have been using the back extension machine and like this young man stated, there is pain from me working out my back again however, with it I'm also gaining strength back. I'm able to stand longer to perform household chores such as laundry, cleaning, ETC without my back screaming in pain like it normally would. Also, I'm able to walk for hours now again without being out of commission because of my lower back pain. I didn't hurt my back per say, it just came on with age and I'm sure sitting too long in my office chair. Now that I'm working out again, it's getting better. I'm going to continue on this journey. I'm also going to look into this young man's program. Thanks again for sharing this!! I've seen way too many people get back surgeries only to either have no affect on their condition and/or get addicted to the pain meds the doctors push. I'm not a fan of pain meds. I will always look for a healthier solution to alleviate pain.

I will be 69 years old and have had back issues for about forty years. Went to the Good feet store 3 1/2 years ago because I have flat feet. I have not had one issue with my back since going there and getting my arch supports. I do back stretches every day and walk 4.5 miles 5 days a week. I have never felt better with my back. Hopefully it continues.

This video is a game changer. He’s talking about things that a started to figure out in the past year but didn’t know were actually a thing. Now I just got steered in the right direction with a more understanding mind. Discovered my slip disk when I was only 12 years old. Doctor was clear, avoid any heavy lifting or twisting activities. Which I refused to follow. Then went on using weird techniques to counter the pain and by doing that caused massive problems everywhere else in my body. I’m now 40, the past 5 years of my life have been THE FRAWKING WORST!!!…. This past year I made a lots of change in my way of seeing my injuries…and now this video… I think I might finally get out of this madness once and for all. THANK YOU!! 🙏

This video is great timing. I've had sporadic lower back problems for many years. About once a year or 2 years, I do something that sends my back into spasms. My doctor has given me good information on strengthening my core. But then, over time, I don't do the exercises anymore, and it happens again. This last time it happened at work, the difference is this time, I'm going to PT. I'm hoping what they have me do is similar to what you recommend. I saved this video to watch again and to remind me of what I need to do. I'm hoping I finally learn and learn my lesson and don't go through the same agony again

I found his info fascinating - and made so much sense to me. I had L4-5 injury post MVA at age 31. I went through therapy, injections, tried every pain reliever (oral, topical) and finally surgery (micro diskectomy) Still left with chronic pain. Now 35 years later I finally learn something that I can do starting today. Had it been known before, quality of life would’ve been different. I was not inactive - worked full time, had kids, exercised etc but that pain was always there. I’m willing to try it. 😃

As a retired vet tech of course I injured my lower back with the bend and twist lifting a 50lb dog, the ONLY person that has ever helped me was my chiropractor, went to my doctor a few weeks later for an unrelated thing and mentioned it to her, she almost blew a gasket, the hatred for chiros was palpable, whatever, I trust my chiro more than her! She ordered x-rays and when the results came back she said it was osteoarthritis, got the x-rays sent to my chiro and he said there was absolutely no arthritis at all, he said it was a disk injury which is true, I was in my early 40's. I had a horse during that time of my life and rode almost 6 days a week, my core was strong, never had a re-injury until I stopped riding and started gardening and had to see my chiro multiple times in the summer, my chiro said I was over doing it, he was correct, but he made me feel better quickly every time. I love my chiropractor, I would honestly be an immobile vegetable on my couch if it wasn't for him.

I had a herniated lower back disk that would also press on my sciatic nerve. Went to pt until they told me I hit a wall on how much I could do. My sciatic pain was chronic for a year and felt it all the way down my leg to my ankle. I didn’t give up and rehabbing my core strength was key as well as walking. Gradually working to walking further and gradually also lifting heavier. After a few months I started feeling better and my pain kept going back to its initial starting point. I now advanced to weighted walking which I love. I agree so much with this interview. Good stuff Dr. Berg!

Great video. Thank you. What caught my attention was the picture of childs pose and caption "Dont do this". Im a yoga teacher for 30 years and my low back has always been my weak link. I found yoga to be a powerful practice for total body strength, awareness and flexibility. I did find that poses like "superman" or locus (laying prone on floor / belly and lifting upper and lower body, breathing and releasing) to be very healing. I always encourage students to listen to their body, don't do it if theres any pain, hold briefly and release, etc. Sometimes ill guide students to just lift one arm and one leg on opposite side at a time. Sometimes just upper body, and or lower body etc. But generally always include childs pose like your thumbnail picture. I didn't hear it addressed?

I injured my lower back in the Army, it became a recurring issue that I couldn't get help from doctors and other medical professionals, I ended up on a self taught movement to fix an issue. Turns out it was Powerlifting to build my core strength along with a good stretching regiment to protect it. Turned out being my leg muscles also not balancing out without self maintenance through stretching. Also developed an issue with my back ribs getting out of adjustment. That grew into frozen shoulder conditions. Moving forward to today. It all boiled down to self maintenance with proper stretching, hydration and diet.

I have been stuck in a never ending loop of lower back pain followed by Core/Abdomen pain for 8-10 years. I was doing Shawn T's "Insanity" program, I was doing really good, lost 45 pounds, but then one day my friends and I wanted to do a sit up competition. I got to about 5-6 when I got the worse charley horse in one of my abdominal muscles (didn't even know that was a thing and it is the WORST pain I've ever felt). After the cramp went away, I had residual pain which forced me to avoid using my core and I think i inadvertently started using my lower back to help compensate. A week or two later, I through my back out and was practically immobile for a week. Ever since then, its just a back and forth of where the pain goes and I can't get it to stop, like I said it is now a vicious loop. I went to my doctor, that did an X-Ray, CT scan, ultrasound and nothing came from it. I ended up going to physical therapist who thought it might have something to do with me not activating my glutes when using my core, but once again, nothing really came out of that, I was still getting charley horses that would eventually lead to back pain. I've always felt like the root cause of this is a weak core leading to the charley horses, but do you think that strengthening the lower back would have an effect? Shot in the dark since I've pretty much exhausted all other avenues!

This exercise dispels the "no pain, no gain" mindset that many of us have lived by. Your vids have provided great pointers for those of us who have abused ourselves over the years. Thanks again! The results speak for themselves.
@kzigmant2 сағат бұрын
Personal accountability is key to this and many other exercises working. Likewise, personal accountability is important after getting surgery. Many patients want to just depend upon the doctor or whomever else gave them advice, whether good or bad advice. Many patients just don't take personal accountability for the recovery or for whatever's happened to them. Once you take personal accountability, and start to take action, your physical and overall health and well-being get much better. Yes, it takes time, but it's well worth it. This video is very very good. I've been exploring things to do over the years so I can avoid back surgery myself. I do some exercising, and I also use a TENS unit for pain management. I don't believe in today's pain management doctors, because most just prescribe you a pill or they just give you a piece of paper and send you home. This video is very informative and helps me continue my journey of self-accountability and advocacy of my own health.

As a person who lost his military career to all levels of back pain and general dystonia that moved beyond just the back, I know through my own experience that if your inflamation levels are insanely high, your back issues will persist practically no matter what you do. Calming them down will literally cut down the level of pain you experience of that perceived pain. Particularly beyond a shorter time period of an acute onset. Find your triggers, and lower, or eliminate them.

@effortlesssuccess25853 сағат бұрын
Low back pain is usually caused by muscle imbalances. The hamstrings, hip flexors and transverse abdominis are the muscles that are weak and tight. People need to train those and also keep stretched, so they are loose and flexible. Most people who lift heavy neglect the stretching part so it leads to muscle imbalance in the body.

Ohhhh thank you for this 😭 im living (hardly call it living) with major chronic back pain from 3 herniated disc, pinched nerve, spinal Stenosis (much more) and fibromyalgia making everything worse...Its been like chasing my tail for any real relief. All I've wanted to do is strength my lower back but its been impossible for me because the fibromyalgia will attack me for doing anything proactive. I constantly tell the physical therapist please only as little as possible so I don't get a flare-up but they can't control themselves and then I pay the price and I'll stop any treatment because im scared of more vicious flare-ups. Before I got hurt and fibromyalgia etc I was kind of a gym rat and x husband was a body builder and he always recommended that specific exercise because I am top heavy (as well as working on me feet/standing long hours) and id try it but it was difficult and im pretty sure I was being too extreme..probably aggravating that area too much and then giving up on it. Really makes sense what he is saying, wonderful information and program. If I can get myself to a place where I can get to a gym again, im fully committed to trying his program. I am a keen gardener and slipped my disc L4. My doctor sent me for an MRI - he wanted to rule out cancer because I had had breast cancer 10 years before. As I am 68 he probably did not think I had been working too hard in the garden. But it was a badly slipped L4 Disc. I did not get back pain. I had very bad sciatica in the leg and partial foot drop. It got better after four months and cured after one year. The pain went after one month but I needed painkillers. Painkillers followed by McKenzie exercises especially the cobra - and lots and lots of walking is the way to get better. No surgery!

So thankful for this video. Don't think I can get the equipment, but I will save for it eventually. Last year getting a CAC score CT scan they saw my thoracic spine was degenerated, my MRI of the brain years prior showed I had stenosis in the neck and bent carotids (they suggested no neck manipulation) and a recent pelvic scan showed my mid and lower spine was also degenerated and I had missing discs from degenerative disc disease. This gives me hope.

If you search through some of Bob and Brad videos they have lots of exercises to help. I injured both of mine and have since recovered. It took a year but I have full mobility in one and almost full in the other.

@@kathleenchambers6485. I broke both my ankles at the same time at the beginning of the lock downs and no doctors were open. I always watch Dr Berg videos for information but on this, I searched for information on my broken ankles and found Bob and Brad. They had great information on rehab that helped me decide it was time for me to get started. I’m so thankful to them and others for putting great info out here. Those guys are great.

At 9:51, this is exactly what happened to me a few days ago! Carried a badly fitted toddler in a carrier in the front for too long, stressing the lower back, never noticed it till the next morning. Perfect timing for this video for me, really need some good exercises to prevent this.
