I do this same thing with art/drawing. I always hate hearing the word 'talent' it's a skill set, anyone can learn a skill set, talent is real but it only gives you a headstart nothing else

That is so true. I'm a perpetual DM and all my players say exactly the same thing "man I wish I could DM. I can't DM" neither could I until I put the effort in. Took me almost a year before things started to click

One of the best lessons to learn from someone who's pushed themselves to learn such a wide range of talents.

I fully agree, I was told by someone else. "No one is born good at doing some. Even a prodigy needs to be taught and refined." Practice , practice and more practice is the only way to get better. I need to do that myself when I get back into art, I've been drowning myself in sorrows for years saying I csnt get good and when I see other people do art I get sad and I stopped doing art. Thank you for the reminder

When I saw the thumb nail I thought twitch did something. Then a second later I noticed the guest you had. Now back to the topic. I 100% agree that anyone is capable of doing what they want if they actually put their mind to it, and apply themselves to do it.

It's important to note that some people aren't aware that they're doing this. It's very common, and you run the risk of them misinterpreting your "because you aren't actually trying" message as "because you're too lazy and not good enough." Internal filters are nasty business. If somebody has bad enough mental health habits, they can make that conversion easily.

I used to believe a lot of people were just born talented and either you have it or you don't and god I was MISERABLE. I dont know what clicked but I finally was able to stop that way of thinking, I still of course have my own insecurities but I'm not letting it stop me from at least TRYING to learn the things I wanna do.

A lot of people don't dedicate themselves to something enough to learn and absorb the information. I got into fitness a year ago, I was fat my whole life but I wasn't about to just start going to a gym and starving myself hoping it would work just to not see results down the road. I researched as much info as I could while applying it and low n behold, I saw progress. I've always been of the mentality that if I'm going to do something, I'd rather not waste time "seeing if it works". It's better to dedicate yourself to something and give what you're learning the respect it deserves. If you decide you don't enjoy it, at least you know you tried.

This has been VERY educational and I thank you so much for all you do. I was curious as to if you'd ever consider uploading your past vods or at least highlights and important tidbits from them since some of your VERY educational ones are gone now and a LOT of newly started or small vtubers could really learn a thing or two about them!. Either or, thank you for being such a positive and educational inspiration!!!!

this also applies to art, i always hear ppl saying they suck at art or can’t draw after complimenting an artist’s work…. YOU CAN!! LMAO also it makes the artist feel awkward asf, talking from personal experience

NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. THERE ARE THINGS OTHER THAN SELF THAT DO GET IN THE WAY, LIKE DISABILITIES, FOR EXAMPLE.

Literally 99.9% of people will not start as a savant in playing an instrument. I play the violin and it took me around 2 or 3 years before I was able to play with any real skill but that's the point I learned and put effort into it and that's why I got better.

Many people have an expectation that if they can't do something within 6 months to a year, they think they're "bad" or "can't" do something. The real issue is - as a novice just picking up a craft for the first time, you cannot compare yourself to someone else that's been perfecting that skill for 20+ years. It's unrealistic.

Honestly, compared to some other rarer, viewer instruments, Piano is technically the easiest to learn with Sheet Music because it was made to be for Sheet Music. So the only thing stopping you from mastering the piano is mechanical skill and DETERMINATION.

I hate to say it, but I absolutely disagree. I get where you're coming from, everyone has the ability to practice and improve, yes. But not everyone has the mental ability to do certain things, and, more-over, some people are inherently better than others. Take art for example. I would love to be able to draw. But my skill, to start, is 'stick figures with scoliosis.' And mentally, I lack the ability to be 'wrong' with art. I can't accept that a line is bad, and move on. I keep erasing and redoing that single line, and before you know it, twenty minutes has passed, and I have a single slightly crooked line. That's not to say I couldn't push myself into it and, after about half a year, have enough slightly crooked lines to make a slightly crooked picture, but that will *never* be as good as someone who does have a natural affinity to drawing. To put it in numbers, others start at a 10, and get better, whereas I start from a 1. I might be able to practice, work hard, and get to a 10, but in the time it took me to get those 9, they've got to 50. THAT BEING SAID: As an artist, the first thing you need to unlearn is comparing yourself to others. I say the above judging myself against myself. I want to be good, but I'll never measure up to my own standard of good, so, to me, it's better for me to apply myself to an area I AM talented at, in my case, writing. Anyone *can* do anything, but I disagree that everyone has the same potential as anyone else.
@pumpkinpotion2 жыл бұрын
I 100% respect your thought process, even if I disagree with the mentality.
@Nabashin882 жыл бұрын
I thought in a similar way for a long time. Seeing little to no progress in several areas I applied myself. I thought there was something wrong with me or that I hadn't found the thing I was good at. I gradually changed my way of thinking and discovered that when I was seeing no progress it was almost always one of two things. I either quit too early or I lacked the understanding and critical thinking on the subject to look at why I was not progressing and then discovering the root cause by asking others or looking the issue up on forums or various other places. Singing is the example I'll use. I spent years singing to my favorite songs and I always sounded bad no matter how much a sang. I just accepted that was how it would always be. I just didn't have a talent for singing. Then I found that singing, even though I wasn't good at it, helped improve my mood. So I started singing on a regular basis. The more I did the more I looked up tutorials to get better just for the fun of it and applied what I learned every time I sang. Whenever I felt stuck, I looked up if anyone else was stuck in the same way and what they did and applied that as well. I am proud to say that while I am far from a professional or classically trained level of singing, I now sound darn good and I have improved more in the last 3 years than I had improved in the previous 30 years before that. I would encourage anyone who feels stuck and like they aren't talented or can't improve to try and figure out why they are stuck and what others in their situation have done to get past that block. Because we are all a lot more capable than we give ourselves credit for. As far as having the same potential as someone else, that doesn't matter because, by your own words, you shouldn't compare yourself to others because who cares if you'll never be as good as some random percentage of people as long as you work to become better than you were if you had just wrote yourself off as lacking a natural affinity. Talent or natural affinity is a small modifier, a 10% bonus kind of mechanic in video game terms, on the real thing that makes someone good at a skill. And that thing is putting the work in. If you have the desire to learn something and are willing to put in the time, effort and the often forgotten critical thinking, to get better, than go for it. You might, no you will, surprise yourself.

"Talent" is what lazy people mistake for dedication and passion. I can't think of anything more insulting to someone that's put years of time and practice into something just to be told they're "talented" like it just fell into their lap or something.
