I feel like if you’re starting off with drawing faces, these kind of references are good to use because it’s a good way to learn the basic proportions of the face. But the fact still remains that these references are very boring references. Once you have gained a good understanding of the face, I think THAT is when you should definitely move on to more expressive references.
@nicvermin15504 жыл бұрын
marina and the summertime eyes i disagree. One of my teachers last year advised to draw more dynamic faces because the shapes are more distinguishable and closer together. A lot of people struggle with expressionless faces like this because the flesh tones come in such huge swathes that it can be easy to misplace certain features. Additionally, it can be easier to understand the proportions of the face seeing faces in more different angles, because helps with an understanding of the piece spatially, as opposed to a more flat mental picture.
@viktoriakasekuchen69964 жыл бұрын

The part where you spoke about skilled artists just being able to "see it" was really fascinating. Makeup is my artistic outlet, and I do remember a certain point where (after years and years of practice) I sort of transitioned from having to really think and plan things out to just being able to sit down, mentally visualize a new look, and create it. It's so weird thinking about how much different my approach to creating new looks used to be.

I agree that expressive characters have great energy and there's lots of research behind them, but is it weird to say that I don't feel any emotional connection to art with exaggerated expressiveness? A "quiet" face with somewhat repressed emotions sometimes hit deeper? That's probably got to do with the theme of the artwork itself, but cartoonish style prolly works better just as practice pieces for some people.

Agree! But subdued emotions can be hard to draw. I think it is much easier to start with exaggerated expressions, and once you've got the characteristic features down, you can play around with it more :D
@trattogatto3 жыл бұрын
I think this is a cultural factor. If people around you are serious, quiet, professional, and they have cold blood everytime, then your brain is working with that "normality", at best you see mild emotions, some (fake) smiles. Anything else is "too much", in your world it is unreal for human beings. Your point of view changes if you live where people do drama everyday, they cry, they get upset, they embrace each others, they kiss, they exult for accomplishments etc... I live in Italy and we display emotions very often, also at work and in pubs. About the stylized characters, I think it is also a cultural factor, you need to percept the "code" of that style, at the point your mind is triggered as if those representations were alive. If this is not working for you, then you have not embodied the cartoon's style. Sometimes it happens to me too, some experimental cartoons are too extreme, and i can't feel emotions.

this is good advice for artists that create characters/illustrations/stories with their art. however, there are still artists that create for aesthetic beauty, and that should be considered. a face being in a “boring” expression is not a problem when you’re creating for that aesthetic beauty, and it is in no way easy if you’re adding a sufficient amount of other elements of art to make the piece a work of art.

Honestly stuff like this is so overated, no disrespect to people who draw girls like this, its just seen everywhere, and it's become less and less original to the point its creativity no longer has potential to expand knowledge and progression. Of course stuff like this ain't easy, but if you keep drawing the same old thing perfect and perfect again, you're leaving out other doors to pursue bigger things. Such as Anatomy, form, and Perspective. Aspects like these can help improve your art, and what you want to express to the viewer. Stuff like this is creative and original. Drawing a face with pretty eyes can only get you so far. Based on a person's preference, art can be whatever, and theres no stopping as to what you want and what you learn. Edit: thanks for the feedback! I think it's important to make clear that what I say isnt factual, but my own personal opinion. I say do whatever you want! All I am is giving critiques, pointing out things I feel like artists should focus on if they want to increase their limits. If they dont want to, that's 100% perfectly ok, and if they do, then thanks for listening, it means alot!
@sbjade98125 жыл бұрын
You can draw both things. For me, I consider drawing what you described to be my personal style. It’s what I like to do. There’s absolutely nothing fucking wrong with that? I don’t care if you think it’s “overrated.” With that being said, I’m also learning “proper” proportions and techniques, anatomy etc. I want to acquire that skill. But at the end of the day when I’m drawing in my room for my own pleasure, I will draw in the style that I have always loved, which is this one. Big eyes, small nose, big lips. That’s what I like. And it’s super unfortunate that we’re REALLY out here calling all of these artists’ work “overrated.”
@LM-ix7pk5 жыл бұрын
Right. I feel like now people are only considered artists if they can draw a exact replica of a person place or thing. But the thing is it takes no imagination or creativity or originality to literally just draw out a copy. Anyone can do that and it’s sad that it has becomed the trend. Drawing things from your unique point of view and making it in your own style requires imagination, creativity, and originality. That is what I call talent.

s d for me personally, I love it when the art is not only beautiful but it’s also creative. This type is so unoriginal by now that it’s kinda getting boring. @@LM-ix7pk yes but drawing is also a talent. Not everyone can just pick up a brush and draw someone, even by watching a picture as reference. It takes years of practice to get that good at it. Although it's not that original, you can't just ignore all the hard work they put in to get there.

Not that they aren't talented,but I think that being versatile and drawing more than just same faced girls makes you good . I am trying to learn that too lmao
@mickaelabaker94225 жыл бұрын
I think it's crucial, especially as a beginning artist, to expand your references and inspiration. I don't think the problem here is that people are drawing "expressionless faces" or that expression is boring. The problem is trapping yourself in your comfort zone and thriving from people's validations of your work. Here's the thing: let's say that drawing expressions is the new trend. Now, everyone is drawing these 'interesting' photos with vivid emotions and whatnot. We're back to the same spot we started: people are just drawing what they see. What exactly makes expressions interesting, anyway? Isn't that a subjective thing? I personally don't find a girl with a goofy expression more interesting than a stoic faced girl because of the emotion. My interest is in the art style and composition. I'm interested in the artist's creative expression more than any expression on the character. We all have a constantly evolving style that we lean towards. Some like drawing beautiful people, objects and landscapes. Some like drawing 'ugly' people, objects and landscapes. Some people like strong emotions, some like subtle. Drawing expressionless hot girls isn't the issue here. Truth is, the issue is that people aren't understanding the mechanics from simply drawing references they see on pinterest. They're drawing at a surface value that stifles their growth. On that note, I agree with you completely.

SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT! Lol When you see someone’s art feed and realize it just the same face over and over and over again...it’s disappointing. It’s even worse when you realize there isn’t any people of color, someone with textured hair, or different body sizes. Just the same skinny tik tok white girl.

They don't even draw "white girls" well, they just draw this boring girl with artificial features that looks the exact same in every single picture and you can't even really tell the artists apart from each other.

the colors are usually so doll and flat, no dramatic lightning at all... and even worse, people usually try so hard to get the same colors as the pic, even using eyedropper tool, but having your own color palette is very important.

This is literally exactly what bugs me about pinterest art, whenever I look for character design inspiration I have to filter through tons of pretty people (not that that's inheritantly bad, it's just very overused) or specifically pretty young people. I want to see more ugly characters!! People with wrinkles! Overweight people! People with different features and ages and body types and scars (that aren't conventionally attractive)

@Average Commenter yes, which is why most artists draw so many supermodels 🙄 they mean to stop drawing the same masks with a human underneath everybody draws. nobody looks like that. draw a human, not a mannequin.

Y'all I meant conventionally attractive. Of course every body is beautiful, it just happens that a lot of companies and advertisers (and even photographers at times) usually will choose thin, similar looking models for their work, which in turn manifests itself into what kind of character designs people subconsciously or consciously make.

I am a 13 yo artist and I really adore the way you put this huge issue :"the perfect model syndrom".I try to include more of things that I love into my drawings in order to give'em emotion. I have to practice and study more dynamic references, more diversed sketches and more audacious patterns and color palettes.... You can take a look on my pinterest boards!

In my opinion, the prettier the human model is, the worse the art is, because prettiness is fundamentally the most regular and average features and shapes which don't translate well to art. and that's without getting into the whole aspect of diversity...

Honestly I think its beyond just everyone drawing the same refrence, I think everyone needs to step beyond the tiny box of influences that has been built around instagram, pinterest, art station etc....there are just way too many artist whose work looks exactly the same. The Disney look, the american anime look, the steven universe look it's just being done to fucking death....too many people are looking to other current illustrators for influence and it shows
@CustardBustard5 жыл бұрын
On the flipside, it makes it very easy to stand out from the crowd when your art is even remotely different to theirs. Eventually envy will set in and they will be emulating something else that got popular because it was different.

@mickaelabaker94225 жыл бұрын
I agree with the same influences/inspiration thing, but you also gotta remember that, no matter what, you're gonna find yourself in a niche or trope. Want to draw ugly monsters? There's a niche for that. Quirky steven universe like characters? There's a niche for that. It's like music genres at this point.

@@sarahu6708 realism is not necessarily photorealism. There's infinite ways to draw the same subject with little or a lot of stylization, it's a spectrum and every artist adds their own flavor

I agree. I’ve seen several KZbin/influencers posting their portfolios that got rejected from Art school, only to see their portfolio is entirely the cartoon/americanized anime doodles. Its one thing to do easier cartoons as a beginner to learn proportions and such, but if you’re trying to make a career out of it you have to expand your boundaries

Drawing only Instagram models when you learn to draw faces is like drawing only young female nude models with nice bodies when you try to learn how to draw human figures. I really appreciate that my art professor invited some old and overweight nude models when I attended figure drawing class. There really is a wide range of human body types.

Since I'm a cartoonist, dynamic faces and poses were one of the first things I learned to draw. I've never seen the appeal of drawing realistically. I see reality everyday, I want my drawings to show me something new. I want to create my own world. I know some people draw realistically as that is what's generally sought after and may pay the bills, but I'd never trade my happiness for money. (And actually, many people like cartoons as well. I follow a cartoonist who sells their designs for $500-$3,000 everytime! Don't ask me who's forking that out... I'll never understand paying that for a 2D character...)
@randomartist60474 жыл бұрын
As random as this sounds this comment kind of gave me an art revelation lmao. I found that I'm stuck telling a story with one, realistic, expressive picture and it really makes me rethink how I'm gonna keep practicing art... Though for me personally, realism doesn't only mean paying the bills, it's what speaks to me compared to the cartoonish style. It's what inspires me and pushes me and surprisingly, I find less success with it compared to making a cartoonish style (I do a lot of portraits for people and they usually want a style, not a photocopy, I have a realism talent they just don't really want it...)
