sure, theres nothing wrong with their features, but they are conventionally attractive, and it gets pretty tiring to just see drawings of the same kinds of faces over and over. the standard "disney" face with the small button nose, big eyes, and slim face is so repetitive, and it wouldnt hurt artists to have more diversity in the faces they draw. there are so many different features and faces out there!

I feel like if you’re starting off with drawing faces, these kind of references are good to use because it’s a good way to learn the basic proportions of the face. But the fact still remains that these references are very boring references. Once you have gained a good understanding of the face, I think THAT is when you should definitely move on to more expressive references.
@nicvermin1550
@nicvermin1550 4 жыл бұрын
marina and the summertime eyes i disagree. One of my teachers last year advised to draw more dynamic faces because the shapes are more distinguishable and closer together. A lot of people struggle with expressionless faces like this because the flesh tones come in such huge swathes that it can be easy to misplace certain features. Additionally, it can be easier to understand the proportions of the face seeing faces in more different angles, because helps with an understanding of the piece spatially, as opposed to a more flat mental picture.

That's why I actually asked my friends and random people in a facebook group to send photos of them to draw for free ('cause I'm still learning)... I REALLY wanted to explore different faces but also noticed that many online references are boring and look the same (at least those most popular that always show up at the top), so I decided to try this and I am very happy... it opened my eyes and some people sent me photos of their pets and I would never be brave enough to actually try to draw animals (because they are so easy to mess up).. so if you want to practice remember that you also have friends and family and can ask them for reference pictures

another reason why i HATE the drawing insta/pinterest models trend is because they all look so boring. Yes they're very pretty, but if you continue to draw every character with big doe eyes, long lashes, tiny noses and pouty lips it becomes redundant and ive fallen victim to this in my drawings. exactly!! i used to draw super boring expressions (which im still guilty of but trying to break away from lol) and all of my characters had tiny noses, big lips, huge eyes, and long lashes. ive started creating more eye/nose/lip/face shapes and it made a huge difference in my art. my characters are more unique and special to me now

I’ve noticed a few ppl complaining ab the fact that American animation is becoming more and more ugly (unlike animé and stuff like that w/ those big eyes and cute lil faces). Tbh I think it’s more appealing like you said. I can’t describe but I if I had to try, I think it’s the uniqueness of it all. It’s wayyyy more creative and fun to replicate/ build off of

People say the same thing about cartoon characters like Meg Griffin or Hailey from American Dad. Sure, you could make them more beautiful, but that leaves them too boring. It's a deliberate choice; not a lack of talent or poor tastes. Ditto with modding all the "ugly" characters out of semi-realistic video games. It takes out all the individuality. There's gotta be a balance.

The part where you spoke about skilled artists just being able to "see it" was really fascinating. Makeup is my artistic outlet, and I do remember a certain point where (after years and years of practice) I sort of transitioned from having to really think and plan things out to just being able to sit down, mentally visualize a new look, and create it. It's so weird thinking about how much different my approach to creating new looks used to be.

I agree that expressive characters have great energy and there's lots of research behind them, but is it weird to say that I don't feel any emotional connection to art with exaggerated expressiveness? A "quiet" face with somewhat repressed emotions sometimes hit deeper? That's probably got to do with the theme of the artwork itself, but cartoonish style prolly works better just as practice pieces for some people.

@trattogatto
@trattogatto 3 жыл бұрын
I think this is a cultural factor. If people around you are serious, quiet, professional, and they have cold blood everytime, then your brain is working with that "normality", at best you see mild emotions, some (fake) smiles. Anything else is "too much", in your world it is unreal for human beings. Your point of view changes if you live where people do drama everyday, they cry, they get upset, they embrace each others, they kiss, they exult for accomplishments etc... I live in Italy and we display emotions very often, also at work and in pubs. About the stylized characters, I think it is also a cultural factor, you need to percept the "code" of that style, at the point your mind is triggered as if those representations were alive. If this is not working for you, then you have not embodied the cartoon's style. Sometimes it happens to me too, some experimental cartoons are too extreme, and i can't feel emotions.

He's in the dead center but it doesn't make it visually boring because of the moving thing in the back and how it's slightly blurred to focus on him. Makes for an aesteically pleasing set up to match his ASMR-y voice. 👌🏻 I love expression! I definitely want to work on epressive portaits and characters, especially incorporated into the environment.

These are good “beginner” references though. Or practice drawings. I started by drawing these, some that you showed even, until I got good and then I began drawing more complex drawings, and adding things. And I really don’t think I’d be where I am now if I didn’t start off simple. It helped me to learn the basic shape of the face and where shadows and highlights should fall and I think it could do the same for others as well. But if we’re talking about an experienced artist I completely agree with you. These are, well, pretty boring.

this is good advice for artists that create characters/illustrations/stories with their art. however, there are still artists that create for aesthetic beauty, and that should be considered. a face being in a “boring” expression is not a problem when you’re creating for that aesthetic beauty, and it is in no way easy if you’re adding a sufficient amount of other elements of art to make the piece a work of art.

Honestly stuff like this is so overated, no disrespect to people who draw girls like this, its just seen everywhere, and it's become less and less original to the point its creativity no longer has potential to expand knowledge and progression. Of course stuff like this ain't easy, but if you keep drawing the same old thing perfect and perfect again, you're leaving out other doors to pursue bigger things. Such as Anatomy, form, and Perspective. Aspects like these can help improve your art, and what you want to express to the viewer. Stuff like this is creative and original. Drawing a face with pretty eyes can only get you so far. Based on a person's preference, art can be whatever, and theres no stopping as to what you want and what you learn. Edit: thanks for the feedback! I think it's important to make clear that what I say isnt factual, but my own personal opinion. I say do whatever you want! All I am is giving critiques, pointing out things I feel like artists should focus on if they want to increase their limits. If they dont want to, that's 100% perfectly ok, and if they do, then thanks for listening, it means alot!

You can draw both things. For me, I consider drawing what you described to be my personal style. It’s what I like to do. There’s absolutely nothing fucking wrong with that? I don’t care if you think it’s “overrated.” With that being said, I’m also learning “proper” proportions and techniques, anatomy etc. I want to acquire that skill. But at the end of the day when I’m drawing in my room for my own pleasure, I will draw in the style that I have always loved, which is this one. Big eyes, small nose, big lips. That’s what I like. And it’s super unfortunate that we’re REALLY out here calling all of these artists’ work “overrated.”

Right. I feel like now people are only considered artists if they can draw a exact replica of a person place or thing. But the thing is it takes no imagination or creativity or originality to literally just draw out a copy. Anyone can do that and it’s sad that it has becomed the trend. Drawing things from your unique point of view and making it in your own style requires imagination, creativity, and originality. That is what I call talent.

i used to only draw these girls but that was because i wasn't too confident in my art but then my friend asked for a commission piece, the only problem was that she wanted me to draw pennywise, at first i kept holding it off saying that "i was extremely busy with other pieces" until i finally go sick of coming up with excuses and i got around to doing it. the drawing was/is the best drawing that i've produced and it's the one i'm most proud of yet it was the one i feared doing the most. basically, what i'm trying to say is don't sell yourself short, art is about making mistakes and growing from them it isn't about staying in your comfort zone.

I feel like those types of pictures are good for beginners of portrait drawings. Starting small with less expressive faces can help you learn to draw the basic anatomy and proportions of a face, helping you build your skill up to the point where you’re more comfortable drawing more expressive faces. I’m not a professional portrait artist by any means, but that was just my whole take on it. I know it’s not good to just stick to drawing the same boring and expressionless faces all the time, but I just believe it to be good for when you’re just starting out :)

I think it's crucial, especially as a beginning artist, to expand your references and inspiration. I don't think the problem here is that people are drawing "expressionless faces" or that expression is boring. The problem is trapping yourself in your comfort zone and thriving from people's validations of your work. Here's the thing: let's say that drawing expressions is the new trend. Now, everyone is drawing these 'interesting' photos with vivid emotions and whatnot. We're back to the same spot we started: people are just drawing what they see. What exactly makes expressions interesting, anyway? Isn't that a subjective thing? I personally don't find a girl with a goofy expression more interesting than a stoic faced girl because of the emotion. My interest is in the art style and composition. I'm interested in the artist's creative expression more than any expression on the character. We all have a constantly evolving style that we lean towards. Some like drawing beautiful people, objects and landscapes. Some like drawing 'ugly' people, objects and landscapes. Some people like strong emotions, some like subtle. Drawing expressionless hot girls isn't the issue here. Truth is, the issue is that people aren't understanding the mechanics from simply drawing references they see on pinterest. They're drawing at a surface value that stifles their growth. On that note, I agree with you completely.

Since I'm a cartoonist, dynamic faces and poses were one of the first things I learned to draw. I've never seen the appeal of drawing realistically. I see reality everyday, I want my drawings to show me something new. I want to create my own world. I know some people draw realistically as that is what's generally sought after and may pay the bills, but I'd never trade my happiness for money. (And actually, many people like cartoons as well. I follow a cartoonist who sells their designs for $500-$3,000 everytime! Don't ask me who's forking that out... I'll never understand paying that for a 2D character...)

Though for me personally, realism doesn't only mean paying the bills, it's what speaks to me compared to the cartoonish style. It's what inspires me and pushes me and surprisingly, I find less success with it compared to making a cartoonish style (I do a lot of portraits for people and they usually want a style, not a photocopy, I have a realism talent they just don't really want it...)
