Eating fat to satiety is perhaps one of the most seductive lies that I fell for in the early days of my low-carb/keto journey.
I kept hearing the keto gurus say that I should simply 'eat fat to satiety'. Apparently, fat was the most satiating macronutrient and the best thing I could choose to eat if I wanted to get skinny and avoid my family history of Type 2 Diabetes.
However, after putting this into practice and gaining even more fat on my body, it was time to see if this held up against the data.
Here I am discussing the role of insulin with Ted Naiman.

@@k41418 since coming back from strict carnivore to more keto I notice I do need more insulin to cover meals, but not a ton more, just need to take a unit or so for meals when I didn't before - which may be something other type 1s don't want to do, but I don't mind taking more to cover. It's still a very small amount compared to if I were eating carbs.

I'm lucky to have my own T1D 'lab rat'. I've learned SOOOO much. such an honour to gain so much insight. it's fascinating to see many T1Ds half their insulin dose and drop their HbA1c when they stop adding fat to chase ketones and focus on nutrients and adequate protein.

Interesting. So basically on Keto's "infancy" days (and unfortunately still is the general Go To macro to this day since I also am using the same exact Macro's). IT was thought that the best way to go about Keto is to just went full on 5-10% net carbs per day, 30% protein and the rest are Fats. Although in my case I never really went full on fat. Most of the time I do stick to 25g carbs, then the Fat and Protein I take during a single day are usually equal. But then when I went and watch Ted Naiman's presentation from Low carb down under which was 5 Years ago. Right at the end of that 30 minute video. He had 2-3 different diets. None of it had hard core Keto at all or anything that had super high fat diet that is what's being shared today. Which is I guess is wrong then? One good diet being: High protein, fiber and nutrients and low carbs and low fat (low carb but not as low as the keto 5% carbs one). (this is more of a typical body builder diet which of course holds true as it does work) And I am like, so the diet I am on now, the supposed keto diet is wrong then as Ted kind of contradicting the keto diet he was so in to before? So here I am watching this video to do even more research haha. So far in my journey. I started the balanced diet with 500 calorie deficit and I did cycle on a stationary bike atleast 3 times a week 30-60 mins (Heartbroken phase I know TMI right lol). I lost 8 KG from that. Then my weight plateaued. I have no idea why maybe I was not strict enough on weighing the food that comes in my gob. So I tried Keto which I am on now. Still in 500 caloric deficit, did not cycle much as I was busy and too tired to cycle like I used too as I work nightshifts and its not nice specially when trying to build muscles.. I did the run of the mill google "keto" recommended macro's being 5%-10% fat (i did 25g per day max), 20-30% protein and the remainder are all Fat from avocado, peanuts etc. But I did not really go heavy on fat. I more of like ended up having 5% carbs then 50/50 Protein/Fat in a day. I dropped a further 6KG +/- 1KG weight fluctuation from water. I did not feel any keto flu, although I did have bad breathe, smelly urine and you do get dehydrated for sure. And I drink a lot of water and some electrolyte tablets. It seems to have worked? I dunno, one thing I know is that once you get going you do not crave for sugar. But when you end up eating carbs and sugars again on special occasions a.k.a your birthday, someone else's or Christmas time. You do feel down cause you kinda dropped the ball. And its back to trying to bounce back to keto again. Which I am on a dilemma again. Maybe I should go back to the balanced diet again. I need to watch the full video first I don't know.

10-20% non-fibre carbs (i.e. low carb, not hard-core keto) seems to align with the best satiety outcome. most people gravitate to 45% carbs and the rest from industrial seed oils which aligns with eating a lot more. see optimisingnutrition.com/amdr-for-carbs/

@therealsergio

it seems to me that what your system calls the "personal fat threshold", is precisely enough glucose in the blood daily to maintain Liver glycogen capacity, and no more. Any more and that liver tells the pancreas, flood the body with insulin which causes 2 bad circumstances (both caused by insulin production). One is storing the unstoreable glucose as fatty acids in adipose tissue (which is not evolutionarily bad, we did after all nearly starve in winters once), and the other consequence is turning off release of fatty acids from the adipose tissue (again precisely as the liver demands when it signaled that it was saturated). The problem is that if you are morbidly obese, these mechanisms work against your efforts. This is the dynamic that controls weight loss, a dynamic which the caloric theory of metabolism completely misunderstands (and people wonder why they plateau on far fewer calories than basal metabolic rates would suggest)
