The trick is just to do it fast enough. If you're a big, it gets harder because (a) nobody wants to see you lumber thru a take, (b) everyone will be watching you, (c) it will look slow and throw them off. But watch how Scall does it, it's all about looking like you knew what you were doing 😂🎉

Yes as soon as you lift your established pivot foot you have to release the ball. If you come back down without getting rid of the ball then it's a travel.

As i see it, in the second example the gather is WHEN (not before) the first foot touches the ground. According to NBA & FIBA rules that would be the gather/zero step and the scenario is exactly the same as in the first example and legal.

I know for high school, it's NFHS 4-44-2.b2. In NCAA, it's 9-5.4.a.1. But for FIBA and NBA, the "zero" gather step gets involved and makes some additional footwork legal

Im confused abt the 2nd rule as well. If you gather the ball on the first step, that step must be the pivot and cannot touch the floor again if raised. However he landed on both feet, which includes the pivot. Does that not make it a travel?

Simultaneously on both feet, either may be the pivot foot; 2. On one foot followed by the other, the first foot to touch shall be the pivot foot; 3. On one foot, the player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both, in which case neither foot can be the pivot foot. b. When one foot is on the playing court: 1. That foot shall be the pivot foot when the other foot touches in a step; 2. The player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both, in which case neither foot can then be the pivot foot. a) 3 a nd b) 2 are the rule

The second move is a travelling violation. However, I doubt that referees will be able to see that "early gather" in live speed. If he had caught the ball a bit later, when his left foot is already on the ground, it would have been a legal play. EDIT: The third move, as performed in this video, is also a travelling violation. He caught the ball with his left foot on the court, jumped and despite his attempt to land with both feet simultaneously, he landed with his left foot prior to his right foot. This is touching the court consecutively with the same foot (a.k.a hop) and is illegal. The first move in this video is legal.

I know that he's trying to make all of them legal for the purpose of explaining the zero step rule, but in this video, he kind of slipped up and caught the ball too early on the second move. Also, the third move was illegal as well, as he caught the ball with his left foot on the ground, jumped and despite his attempt to land with both feet simultaneously, his left foot landed first before his right foot. This is called touching the court consecutively with the same foot or a hop and is illegal.

@@Krittin0 he explained his second move was already illegal tho (but actually legal in the NBA and FIBA). The third move is actually legal at all levels. It's one of those special rules. For high school and AAU, the lowest level, it's NFHS 4-44-2b I think. 2b1 or 2b2.

@@malasc12 Completely incorrect. The second move as performed in this video is ILLEGAL in ALL leagues. Caught the ball BEFORE left foot is down. (No step 0) Left foot hits the ground (Step 1 NOT gather step/step 0) Jumps off left foot, lands with both feet simultaneously (Step 2) Makes another pivot (Step 3=Travel). The third move is ALSO ILLEGAL IN ALL LEAGUES. Caught the ball with left foot on the floor (Step 0), jumps off left foot, lands on left foot followed by right foot. IMMEDIATELY when his left foot TOUCHES the ground for a second time, he has committed a travelling violation. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE GROUND CONSECUTIVELY WITH THE SAME FOOT AT ANYTIME WHILE HOLDING THE BALL.

I'm confused. I'm Mexican, and the way I was taught is there are two kinds of stops. On one beat (gather on the air, two feet land at the same time, either one can be the pivot) or on two beats (gathering on the air, first feet to land becomes the pivot foot). Is this because of fiba rules?

Bruh, what confuses a lot of people like you is you think steps are limited in a live dribble or before the gather happen(hold the ball with two hands). No it is not limited, you could take as much steps as you want as long as the dribble is alive and not being gathered with 2 hands. Just like the concept of stutter steps. The only time the steps are limited to two, is after you gather the ball with two hands. That is why the gather step is not counted as a step, coz that step is done while the ball is being gathered, not after the gather.

Nope, all three are travel. The rule says that you can jump off the pivot foot, but neither foot can tough the floor before you release ball. First clip is a clear travel. You can't lift the pivot foot without getting rid of the ball.

Objectively wrong. You get two steps without dribbling. Pivot foot is step 1. You can lift the pivot foot, as lifting a foot is not a step putting it DOWN is. Lifting the pivot foot and stepping into the 2nd foot, is lifting step one and standing in step 2. It's not a travel until step 1, the pivot foot, touches he ground again creating a step 3. Absolutely NOWHERE does it say you cannot lift a pivot foot except before starting a dribble. But it specifically states the pivot may be lifted on a pass or try for goal (a shot.) Every 2 step layup would be a travel according to you, as the first foot lmto plant on the ground is the technical pivot foot, and then when it lifts as you take step two, YOU would have to call a travel. But that's wrong. A very common misunderstanding of the rules too.
