Blend modes are funny - they really are the main backbone of a graph and one of the primary ways to manipulate greyscale values. Even though this is the case they are reaaaly misunderstood in my experience! Even among people who have used these tools for ages! It's very quick to learn them all and there is a ton of value in NOT guessing

Copy might be easy to skip over on the surface, but it's nuance is really important to understand, particularly with LDR total height range preservation which is a common use case in Designer. Looking at: result = (a * opacity) + (b * (1 - opacity)) You can see that of course it's multiplicative, but at least by a constant which is easier to compensate for if you need to track it downstream. But you are effectively taking a fixed height volume, and compressing two inputs into that fixed range. Avoiding multiplication in height creation, or reserving it for special cases rather, is great advice.

I've been trying to switch to open source software and freeware (though your videos make me miss Substance), so I really appreciate videos like this that tackle the content on a conceptual level so I can apply it while using Material Maker as well.

I tend to use overlay and soft light for adding little details to a height map, probably partly because I've seen those used a lot in Photoshop, though I don't know how they work. Those two and divide are the blending modes I'm least familiar with. Add Sub is one I'm less familiar with, too, though I think it adds foreground values higher than 0.5, subtracts foreground values less than 0.5, and doesn't change the background value when the foreground value is 0.5. Something like that anyway. EDIT: Switch is the one mode I'm completely unfamiliar with, though it appears to work similarly to Copy.

That's correct on add/sub - I'm unsure how soft light works in designer, It's always a bit of a grab bag how it's implemented, I believe in photoshop it's overlay but the foregroung is squared up first. I good way to think about it in Designer is as an overlay with a lighter touch - As mentioned in the video, I prefer it for color blending.

I've been thinking that the worst thing I'm doing is making old paint on surfaces. Maybe a tutorial? (in particular the moment when, at the edges of cracks, the paint is like.. bending from the surface)

Ah I think I got it, you're going from the pyramid shape, which's borders are closer to zero, and hence don't lift up the clouds as much.
