Yep, I rarely ever listen to a song without gouging: a. are those drum kit drums or samples, b. can I play it, c. can i play it better; I rarely can relax when there's drum kit in a song. I sometimes even catch myself counting when I've no intention to learn/play the song! Stephen should do a lesson on how to stop listening to just the drums in songs, for real!

Not sure if that link is really the same thing. That seems to be more about how to really dive into the specifics of the music and hear/notice all those details. whereas this video is more like... taking a step back and just taking it in without judgement, and seeing how it makes you feel and the atmosphere and stuff. Taking a back seat/dropping back into an observer position. As far as I gathered. Could be wrong! If you want to get better at THAT, then the best way is to do mindful meditation for 10 minutes the day. Teaches you to just notice things arising in consciousness (including your thoughts/judgements, etc). It's something everyone should at least have a go at. Generally very beneficial and enjoyable. I definitely recommend the "Waking Up" app. Specifically.

Buying the $99 Grado SR80e headphones will facilitate this. I just got them a few weeks ago and the sound quality is crazy good for a pair so cheap. The sounds become crystal clear like the recording studio is inside your brain, and the soundscape incredibly wide and balanced (cause they’re open back).

Preach it, brother. Awesome stuff. I discovered this all by accident. When I first found Joe Satriani, I had just bought a cd and was just vegging out after work one day. It got dark out and was too lazy to turn on the lights, kicked back on the couch, closed my eyes and heard Flying in a Blue Dream. Blew my mind. Never looked at any song the same

This is absolutely true and enlightening. Nowadays musics and songs are easily played on various streaming services, along with the unlimited playlist and people tend to get numb with what a music can induced to their mind. In some ways we have been taken granted of this conveniences - listen too much without hearing the actual essence, we tend to lost the appreciations to the precious art piece.

Listening at the surface level is where we let the music take us on a ride. Digging down to the base level is stoping to "hear"(feel/see/touch) the language being used. We have to adjust our camera angle to do this. Zoom in and out. This was how it was explained to me in the past. Thanks Stephen! Ex. I listened to some Rachmaninov a couple of days ago to demonstrate this idea to stepson who has taken up violin. I was showing him how the soul can be moved by just a few notes.

Pink Floyd came to mind while watching this video. Floyd took blues and gave it a whole new feel. I have listened to (heard) The Dark Side of the Moon hundreds of times and I still get lost in it. Probably the most useful video for musicians EVER! The music is everything and we all play our parts but the object is the ( hopefully greater ) sum of the parts. You must see the bigger picture to start with, and then your part. It's the best I've ever felt on stage when I "hear" the bigger picture. It's like an out of body experience! Its very seldom I get any satisfaction if I'm just thinking chops chops chops cos, coming from that mindset they never bloody work anyway! My favourite inspiring drumming has always been the simpler stuff but it's perfectly chosen and placed in the music and thats where the power is. Perfect placement!! Thanks Stephen, lovin the attitude mate.

Man, I know you're right, but after years of trying to learn to improve my own writing, it's a reflex that's difficult to turn off. I love that you mentioned artists in other genres - I have found the greatest joy when I am working with an ensemble where I am so engrossed in the music that there is no space to think about what I am playing, I just know that I want to participate in the musical conversation in the moment. I have played behind vocalists that have had me in tears behind my kit - the result, some of the most musical performances I have played with the fewest notes. Each note meant that much more in support of the song. Don't get me wrong, it is fun to chop out (in the practice space only) - but I'd rather play 8th's on the hat with cross-stick on 2 & 4, 1 and 3 on the kick if that is all that is needed

Agree with everything you're saying, I just have flipped definitions of "hear" and "listen" than you're using. "Hearing" is the physical, involuntary response of soundwaves and electrical signals that results in surface level / dissection. But "listening" is the conscious, active, intentional activity that evokes deeper understanding of purpose and context. Great advice, I just think you're using hearing and listening opposite to their definition.

What you're really saying is to get rid of distractions. You can't really hear a song while driving, cleaning the kitchen or playing a video game. The music just becomes background. If you want to (attempt to) appreciate what an artist did, yeah, turn off the lights and just hit play. If you're listening to see what the drummer did, focus on that, but he probably did what he did to COMPLIMENT the other players and see how the drums serve the song in general. Oh and getting high helps, yes, but it will block the memory of what you focused on. Great video! Thanks.

I totally get where you're coming from. I've been guilty of over analyzing music most of my life. Finally, I've been able to kind of abate this approach. More often now than in the past. I'll hear a song or piece and really feel it without dissecting it. It's those times now that I try my best to hinder myself from discovering the science of the music. I have actually had a favorite song that I have over analyzed to the point it was no longer my favorite because now I only hear the science of how the song is built. There are times now when a student will ask me to teach them their favorite song, and I ask them, "Do you really want to learn how this song works, or do you want it to remain your favorite song?" Very good point! I agree, however I think that the way music is distributed these days is different from when I was a kid. When I was younger I would go to Meijer (which is the home grown equivalent of Wal-Mart) and wait just before midnight the day a new anticipated album was released. Grab it from the worker as they were pulling it out of the box. Go home and listen to it start to finish while reading the lyrics and soaking up the album artwork. Reading what the members and would say in the back of the insert. I would literally spend all my allowance money on CD's. I still buy them quite often but they're not as readily available. Without going online to purchase them. Everything has become digital download this, Pandora that and in my opinion, it takes away from the amount of artistry depth and overall experience of being able to enjoy not only the music, but the creativity it took to bring to life.

I'm not sure if I'm alone in this but I generally start laughing when I find myself in the presence of a really astounding musician/ group. Never been quite sure why it is as but ...smiling... Jaw dropping then... Dunno... Something about the sheer wonder of that achievement, that startling mix of emotion and immediacy mixed with technical fluency ...Hearing/seeing that happening... it's one of the most amazing human feats, I think. It just makes me feel so good that I start laughing... And then dancing :-) ...I guess I'm very happy to be able to experience that and not be permanently stuck analyzing. I think a lot boils down to emotional availability, it seems a lot of folks suffer from blockages in that area -from education or upbringing, I don't know, a lot of first world woes due to this, in my opinion. I think this also has some connection with a blockage between the intellect or senses and the body - as in dancing, or staying stock still when hearing music that really SHOULD make you start moving, impulsively. I was at a particularly energetic concert the other day, a group consisting of real virtuoso musicians, amazing driving jazz fusion, epic sound. ...I looked around in one song that was pumping like, I don't know what and... Not a head twitching... And I wanted to dance like a madman, in fact I did, alone, partly because I wanted the band to know their efforts weren't entirely wasted. ...But, there are a lot of musicians who act in just the same way... For me, first music lesson - learn to dance, learn how to enjoy dancing.... Cause, I think, if you want to play like Clyde Stubblefield you have to be able to dance, just a little, like James Brown. ..'Cause if you can't feel the difference between a tight groove and groove that makes you want to drop your sticks and start dancing - you're flying blind. ..Apologies... I got into writing that. :-)

Many of my musician friends and I have gone through periods in time where we can only hear things analytically, it's horrible. Happened for a while during and after jazz school. I think it's to do with trying to absorb too much musical info. Really make uninturpted emotional listening a priority and just worry about biting off what you can chew. Get immersed then analyse. I was intrigued by this when i thought that the vast majority of people before the 20th century had no music even remotely close to what we have today. for all of human history, people either talked, or thought. I wonder how that effects the subconscious and if there is an unseen negative consequence. like how we eat processed foods in almost everything, how a persons physiology is affected compared to the rest of human history. are our thoughts now a variation of processed thoughts since we rarely spend time in silence now? i wish i could find more work on the topic and more research into that psychology

I actually had the opposite problem.. In my teens I've always liked music that fitted my vibe and felt real and played with my emotions a certain way. That made me dislike alot of musicians from another genres or styles. With the years, I eventually grown to appreciate skill and how good are a certain band as musicians and learned to enjoy music by just listening and disecting the drum parts, guitar parts, etc. Examples are Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine, bands I really used to hate as a teen cause it wasnt my vibe (I usually listen to old classic rock and metal), but when I realised how 'good' they are, I enjoy their music just because It's fun to "judge" all the parts and their skill. (Went to an Avenged Sevenfold live show and actaully had a blast)

I know this may be splitting hairs, or a case of semantics; but we hear things we don't understand all of the time. I.e. We hear someone speaking in a tongue that we recognize as a foreign language, but we don't understand it. It's interesting how people choose to label or categorize things. I get what you're saying, and what you call "hearing" others call "critical listening".
@StephenTaylorDrums7 жыл бұрын
Sure...totally understand...but to have a discussion on a topic, we have to give definitions to those things which we're discussing. Whether you call critical listening "hearing" or not is inconsequential. Jason Mraz's, We Sing , We Dance, We Steal Things, was another, on the other end of the musical spectrum, for sure, and it purposely had all the complexity and ear candy that I listen for, to make quick judgements. Brand New Day had none of that. Still, both are art at it's purest.

You don't have to analyze a piece of music in order to enjoy it, the creativity in the sound of the song shouldn't be labeled as bad music. Maybe even sometimes when you analyze a song it can put you off and ruin the flow. Ruining your experience in the song's art. ''Oh, this song with banger tunes is garbage because it doesn't have a backstory to it.'' If I listened to a song and enjoyed it, but then decided to analyze it, it would not affect me at all, and I wouldn't even care afterwards.

@sephen taylor For some reason, starting last Thursday, all music hasn't been sitting well with me at all. I tried listening to The Rip Tide as I was taking the bus, but for some reason, it just sounded like a bunch of sounds thrown in together. Ever since then, none of my favourite albums spark any emotion that they used to. I love emotional albums with a message, so this is really concerning to me. Music has been one of the largest aspects of my life (both listening and playing, and I haven't been doing either since). I really don't know what to do here. If anyone could give any recommendations, I'd be more than grateful. Thank you all.

I hear you my man. Great advice, but The Doobie Brothers always told me to listen to the music. :-))

Very good video. I've experienced this a few times. The last time was in a retail store. Radiohead - Creep came on and for some reason I was captured unlike many times before.

I love that band. OK Computer just blew my mind the first time I listened to it.
