Wrong in what way? I don’t think competitors are making any claims(none were made about this product) regarding the products they sell so how can they be wrong? People read more into what they highlight as product features than is being said. That uninformed assumption about things like CFM vs lb/min is what is wrong. CFM can be converted to lb/min though if you know the air density it’s just most customers aren’t going to do the measurements and calculations to actually see how the product performs. But without claims made about it’s performance gains there aren’t any claims to back up. In this particular video the guy is selling a product because people want it not because he believes in it being the right way to do an intake. He gives some specs but doesn’t make any performance claims. If Gale Banks is showing that anyone is wrong it is the uneducated consumer since from what I’ve seen in the vid no claims were made.

I am so glad you made this video! I installed a S&B CAI on my 21 Silverado 6.2. It made it about 4 tenths slower and lost 3 mph trap speed according to my Race Box. It specifically lost huge performance off the line. I knew it was the relocation of the MAF sensor. I called S&B tech and they told me I must have a bad sensor. Well I put it back to stock and it ran perfectly again. All the performance right back! So that is another one you can test but I'm sure it's the same problem. Thanks Gale for your knowledge!

So much that my lowly,stock gutless c13 out pulled a 600 hp c15 out of L.A. Both trucks were loaded to 80,000#s, 5 big mountain passes, out pulled him on every one. EGT,s are so much better, way less heat into the water jacket, I love this stuff, won't run my truck without it. I am currently running a big c15, dyno to the wheels w/o H2O was 625 H/P. I turned the engine down, smaller cam, lower H/P, I was afraid something was going to get broken. 6% grades, 80,000#s, 50 to 55 MPH, and could accelerate up to that speed on grade from a stop in about a mile. Since this style of air intake hit the market, I asked everyone on car message boards "WHERE DOES THE 'COLD' AIR COME FROM?" I got all kinds of Dunning-Kruger answers to that. Also, replacing plastic ducts with aluminum ducts, heating the intake air, was something else I pointed out. I remember growing up getting my first car and putting in a CAI, it was a jetta, what I realized after I installed it is that it "sounded" cooler, but I felt zero performance impact, and saw mileage decrease. So I ended up getting rid of the baffles that were in the original airbox, that was pulling air from the fender, and that gave me a noticeable power increase and didn't see mileage decrease. Ever since then, I've never done a "CAI" ever again, I've always gotten a great K&N filter, and gotten rid of all the baffling and made sure the stock intake was as clear as possible.

Yes it did. I was previously running the open air 6637 filter and while it gave the engine all the air it wanted or needed, it was still sucking in hot engine air. The Banks Ram air draws from both the fender and the front of the truck, so it’s always getting the cooler air from outside the engine bay. I see little to no black smoke which means the fuel is burning better. Quite a few things were keeping my 7.3 from running its best, I got it all fixed but when I got this intake, it was the cherry on top of it all. 👍🏻

I appreciate the roasting, but Banks also sells a couple of products that kinda feel similar. Their F-150 exhaust for example is listed as 3" claiming power, response, lower temp and more mpg but appears to just tie into the factory intermediate piping which is 2.75" (and stock flares out to 3" anyway at the muffler).
@shakenfake
@shakenfake Жыл бұрын
You are correct but only sort of. You are going to have a restriction somewhere but when you add on a higher flowing exhaust it will lower temps and give you better power. Response and more MPG won't really happen though, only slightly. Example of this is my 5" on my duramax, my exhaust temps are way down even though I am still attached to the factory 3" downpipe. So what gives? You now have more flow from the downpipe onward allowing the hot air gasses to escape quicker rather than having a 3" restriction all the way out the back. Hope that helps your understanding.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP Жыл бұрын
@@shakenfake if the factory system didn’t also expand to 3” at the factory muffler I’d say you have a point potentially. Sounds like your system removes a restriction at wherever the downpipe meets the exhaust but this particular product does not remove any restriction. I suppose the Banks system gives you about 12-18” additional in terms of 3” piping but probably cheaper just to get a 3” intermediate pie for $100 bucks which does the same thing.
@shakenfake
@shakenfake Жыл бұрын
@@ALMX5DP But then you are reducing that pipe into a 2.75" muffler inlet 😊 but yes on a gasser it is way different anyway. It is gimmicky that an exhaust can help MPG and power etc (It is possible in some applications that yes it will but 99% of vehicles this is not the case) It will however reduce EGTs Banks exhaust is not overpriced considering it is a whole system. It is about on par.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP Жыл бұрын
@@shakenfake the Banks system would be fine if it was a complete 3” system from the y-pipe flange back but it’s not. The factory muffler is 2.75” at the inlet but people have expanded it to 3” and the rest of the muffler is 3” so technically a full 3” intermediate pipe from the flange would technically flow better than this Banks unit. That combined with the claims makes it really no better than the person he is roasting here.

I read Hugh Maciness' book 'Turbochargers' in the early '80's and it changed my perceptions of producing big power. Banks engines featured in the book and I think even on the cover, big multi-turbo marine engines for hydroplanes. I'm Australian but it's good to see a family company, even across the oceans, sticking with what they know. Some of your gear featured on Rainman Ray's channel too - obviously built to purpose. Keep it up.

The intake insert is so you can run this intake on a stock tune. If you reflash the ECU with upgraded maf data from the new tube you should be able to remove the insert and pick up some good power. Banks provides a maf manipulator which skews your maf data. I personally would rather have my maf reporting actual data to the ECU vs. relying on his signal modifier.

I don’t think this intake is much worse than your DPF back exhaust systems. A nice, free flowing exhaust after the DPF gains no power, sound or reductions in exhaust temperatures. Looks are the only reason. Shouldn’t you be the “authority” and tell your customers it is a waist of money?

There should be a universal fit design for a lot of this stuff.

Across many different engines and brands, I see a LOT of aftermarket companies say their induction pipes flow X more cfm. It really seems that $&B is going for that 'show and no go' crowd that wants an intake for it's mass and sound. Remove the restriction and recalibrate the maf sensor to accommodate the extra airflow. "Airflow vs frequency" under Engine>Airflow in the ECM. It'll require that you disable certain functions and log your fuel trims, but if you setup your pids correctly you'll acquire correct data to update the maf curve according to RPM. Of course before that you should update the VE table, but the maf calibration is essentially what is needed to get it to work without that restriction in the charge tube. Still...hot air is no good. Ideally, a closed box or fresh air inlet from the grill is better. Then there's bestest: interchiller/ice box. Banks is good stuff though. Legitimately made my father in law's disel truck much better.

First, and most importantly, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We know how annoying a code or check engine light can be. Regarding the content of the video, we believe there is a difference between knowingly producing a product that reduces performance and releasing a product that has a flaw. The Ram-Air intake in your truck is indeed actively being worked on. As our Tech Support Team may have expressed, the issue with the intake has been hard to pinpoint because such a small percentage (in the single digits) of 5th Gen Rams suffer from this EGR code. Make no mistake, we will not stop until it's corrected. And, if we cannot fix the issue, we will happily issue a refund. If our products do not improve your driving experience, then we are not comfortable keeping your money. One of our team will reach out.
