In terms of the comment made to you about being repetitive, my response would be, why wouldn't you want to go out and shoot what you have been doing as you've proven Mads how beautiful your country really is. From a personal basis it is great to see a part of the world that I and probably the majority of viewers will never get to experience in its intimacy so to see you it through your eyes and your lens is fantastic. In relation to your question and as a long time follower, I would describe your style as highly adaptable. You have demonstrated time and time again Mads your ability to immerse yourself in a landscape and to extract the best from it through your images. Whether it's the grand vistas, the ethereal look, abstract, escapism to name a few you always bring a scene to life and always leave the viewer wanting to see more and have that great feeling of well being and being inspired after seeing your work 🙂

Jim, those words makes me so happy! Thank you! Adaptable is definitely something I can recognize especially because I really try to get something I personally like to look at in each scene. Some more than others, but generally I aim to get a good shot each time I get out. Whether that's epic atmospheric, intimate, b&w, or something else :)

As a relative beginner in photography I love to hear your guidance. I particularly like when you urge us to shoot for ourselves and not be dictated to by others, and your advice not to chase a style, just take photographs and let the style develop naturally. If I was to describe your style I would say you chase beauty and capture it in the most ordinary places. Well, many very stubborn people strongly believe that in-camera JPEG is some sort of an "original" image, like film. And that the RAW image is just an "unfinished project" that can't possibly be processed properly manually. But, you know how it is ... "If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people" - House While, in reality, cameras distort reality, always. So, we actually need to process the images to get either what we want or the life-like pictures. And, as always, thank you for sharing these very beautiful atmospheric morning :)

You are in principle right Mads. Ansel was doing it with his film pictures and now in the digital world it's even more valid. Raw must be edited. But we have to take care to make a "reasonable" and credible editing: there are too many overedited photos all around the social media, which are more counterfeits rather than photos.

Do not stop what you're doing and the way you do it. Your photos are just magical. So much so that the one you did at Glencoe with the trees reflected into a lake with the Milky Way is now on the home screen of my phone as I simply love it. about editing photos, for me, adjusting brightness, colour, contrast and etc is acceptable. what i cant accept is some ppl add something extra that doesnt exist at the scene. for example, add a milkyway at a place that is impossible to see mikyway.

The mistake of chasing a personal style hits hard. Wanted to chase a moody style which only really works on overcast/cloudy days and was feeling burnt out from having to always wait for those conditions. Now I shoot in all weather conditions and edit accordingly to enhance it rather than trying to force the photo to be moody.

Your style to me is almost beyond words. You instil peace and tranquility with your images recently. To me they are meditative and soothing, beauty in harmony. The grand epic landscape types are full of drama and anticipation. . I would say you become in harmony with your surroundings and render that through the camera. Been following you for about a year Mads and I would describe your images as “atmospheric” most of my personal favourites are images shrouded in mist and fog, back in September you put out a Vlog of conifers surrounded by fog with sun rays shining between them also a lake scene with ducks, again with morning mist. They remain two of my favourite photos of the year. As a once beginner that now regards himself as an amateur thanks to your help and advice, along with a few other associates on YT I am trying my hand at every type of photography possible, with varying degrees of success. Some of my best images have arose from using unorthodox settings, so I for one don’t get hung up on following hard and fast rules when it comes to settings but I do try to get composition correct and things like level horizons etc (the basics) I never get bored watching your Vlogs along with the vast majority of your 140k subscribers 😉👍

Of all the shots the very last and the 3rd to last... the golden tree in the mist rather than the cooler coloured are my favourites. You seem to be doing far less of the large views and vistas and more of detailed areas. I'm glad as I struggle with big views, sometimes not knowing what to concentrate on in a vista. I feel more at home with your approach so thank you.

Great great video, as usual! I love that you talked about the mistake of chasing a style. I was just talking about this a few days ago with some friends. My portfolio contains not only a fair variety of photographic styles but also editing styles. I mentioned to my friends that the idea of chaining myself to a single style sounds very burdensome and restrictive to me. They agreed, saying that they like the variety of styles that they see in my work.

I’ve been loving these more ‘local’ videos - I live on the edge of the Fens in the East of England so don’t have dramatic mountain or sea cliffs on my doorstep, so these vids have been inspirational for me. As for developing a style, I’ve given that a lot of thought as I shoot more than just landscape. Looking at my favourites of my photos I’m now seeing some themes emerging in terms of use of light and colour. I’ve also realised that my ‘mission statement’ (taken from something street photographer Damien Demolder said in one of his talks) is ‘To make the ordinary extraordinary’, and I find that is leading my style a lot now, whether in landscape or in taking black and white headshots for work that show what interesting and beautiful people my colleagues are 🙂

Hi Mads. Another great video. First, a rule for you. "Ignore the nay sayers". Second, batteries. I have my three batteries numbered so I always use the one with the lowest number so 1 then 2 then 3 then 1. Third, horizons. If there is water in the scene I never say the horizon is crooked, I just tell them the water will drain out from the low side of the shot. That gets the message across without any perceived criticism.

I love your thoughts on the challenge of shooting local, rather than these grand landscapes. Gives you a chance to really find new and interesting compositions. I liken it to shooting portraits of a gorgeous model compared to an everyday person. I primarily do wildlife photography in Australia and it's hard to compete sometimes with the tigers, bears and big game animals. I find that challenge though more enjoyable to make the ordinary outstanding.

I'm currently putting together a collection of photos with a style of "individual cropping." Each image is composed using anything other than 5x7 or 4x6 or 4x5 etc. So 3x7 or 9x13.67 or whatever works best with the subject. I have, however, used 1x1 ( square ) cropping and am considering masking some to have circular or elliptical edges.

I always dont get people only making photos in holidays, special events etc. I love to make snapshots of the daily life, of villages and small cities, of my small, unknown village. If i search for a nice photo of the niagara falls, well, there are millions. But what about the small unknown falls in your or my region? Or even only a small, probably even totally unknown fall, or this single tree you find the setting you liked for. Btw my biggest mistake (luckily im not much into landscape photography) were since i use DSLRs (400D as beginner later a 2nd hand 550D) the lenses i bought. Ofc they were awesome considering its price and their special usecase, but despite having these lenses: -28-105mm USM "universal" -18-55 kit anno 2007 (i tried to avoid, always) -75-300mm IS USM telezoom -50mm 2.8 macro I NEVER had any practical "universal" lens except the kit lens which i really didnt like (haptics, usage, quality,...), the 28-105 was some sort of "try" to get a better kit/universal lens, instead the 28mm on crop were HORROR as "universal", but a nice compact tele-allrounder with fast AF at least. Now i sold all "useless" stuff and bought a Canon EOS RP, finally full frame and it was a lifechanger from my EOS 550D -replaced the 28-105mm USM with a 28-135mm IS USM, on Fullframe its really "universal", awesome for landscape and with 135mm i get more or less the same focal lenght at zoom as with the crop sensor on 105mm. Larger and heavier but as a mainly "non tripod" user i really enjoy stabilizer and dont mind the slower aperture at 100mm+. Its more or less a wonder these 15 year old+ lenses are still working just fine today (as my 28-105) - 50mm 1.4, AWESOME, really nice "always on" lens and compact! This lens got me into street photography especially in the night. Another lens which make mostly sense on FF.

Great video Mads! for me personally I like to edit to my own taste and attention to detail. If we all did the same thing it wouldnt make any of us unique or different from each other. Finding your own style I feel is important as a photographer otherwise your just jumping on the trends of what everyone else is doing. Sharing Exif data to images I feel is a bit hit and miss as the conditions Im working in and the conditions of other people's environment is going to be different so the settings will always have to be adjusted. I dont think your video's are samey at all Mads and I find them all inspiring to watch. Always learning something from them. That autumn colour at @9:00 was stunning. Has to be one of my favourite times of year to get out and explore. Loved the shots throughout this video. Really nice work Mads. Keep up the great work!

If i can add one item as viewer, and this will show how hard it is to please everyone and you need to do your thing- but hey you also need to get viewers- in this video I actually was tuning out on all the images from your far away tours, and really focused on your location in your "backyard" images- i actually started tuning out many of the of the photographers that seem to require having major environmental impact, without even seeming to be aware of it, as part of their brand, so it is always great to watch one that seems to be able to capture what is just there.

We had mist forecast for the weekend. I waited with bated breath getting up stupid o clock to see if the mist was there but alas, nothing. Come Monday morning and it's time to head back to work I got up normal time, 05:00 took a gander outside, and lo and behold - the most perfect mist, no rain, no wind, just this beautiful white and thick mist hanging in the woodlands down the road from my house - and I couldn't go photograph any of it... I cried in the shower, cried on the way to work, cried in the management meetings, cried on the way home, and cried myself to sleep that night 🤣🤣🤣 One day I will get the perfect conditions.

I believe you are a leader of the Styleless school of landscape photography. Rooted in Neoclassicalism but with features associated with Danish Minimalism and Marxist Expressionism. Your art would fit well in a Danka informed space. I usually adjust the vertical aspect of my primary trees in photoshop. For a naturalist, as yourself, such seems far less important.

This is great Mads. How do you figure out where and when this atmospheric mornings?

Check the weather. Look for forecasted fog and what the cloud density looks like. Clouds play a pretty significant role in landscape photography. Overcast creates a different mood and different lighting than partly or mostly cloudy would. The cloud coverage combined with or without fog will create very different moods. So from his videos it looks like he looks at what the fog/cloud density are going to look like around the time the sun is rising and then he probably decides if that's the type of mood/atmosphere he's going for. As far as where, it seems like Mads mostly hikes around in areas where he lives. So he can pick a location and then look at the forecasted weather for that spot and then he just kinda hikes around and observes nature until he catches something that looks interesting. Also, looking for rain. Let's say it was predicted to rain overnight and stop raining just before sunrise. Clouds and nature have a very different look to them after a storm or varying levels of rain.
