Heya, Rita aka Fàn Lǎoshī is here! No matter how long it's been since you first started learning Mandarin Chinese, there always are some all-time mispronounced words that we use literally every day! As a matter of fact, the longer you have a bad habit speaking them, the more difficult it'd be if you want to correct them yourself. And of course, you need to realize what the correct way is to say them before you put in time and effort to practice everything!
So today let's go through the 10 (pairs of) MOST commonly mispronounced Chinese words and nail them in 12 minutes! Make sure to hit the like if you learned something, so I'll make another video talking about the most mispronounced words that are messed up by tone mistakes!
If you still struggle with listening to Mandarin clearly and particularly speaking Mandarin naturally, or you have no idea where to start your journey of Chinese learning, join my Chinese pronunciation training program “FINDING YOUR MANDARIN VOICE” today, (re)form the best possible habits, and speak crisp Mandarin in the next 3 months!

Glad to hear that, Ed!! It takes some time to be used to a whole different sound system, but you will get there as long as time, effort, and efficient methods are used!

11:12 I know for me, it's the pinyin. This is exactly why I always ask my language partners to write the word for me, then say it. Then I practice saying it with them because I sometimes mix up "uo" and "ou". 🙃 Because they use the same letters, it's very easy for me to confuse them even though I know they're two different syllables.

Thank you so much Rita! I'm 14 and I'm trying to do my best in mandarin with a small background in Cantonese, a lot of the words in Cantonese can be easier to pronounce as a beginner then in Mandarin, however this video helps me a lot!! 非常感谢Rita!!

范老师好!I learned pronunciation through Mandarin Blueprint's pronunciation mastery course, which has never contradicted anything you've taught on your channel, and it's taught by a British white person actually. I know you talk a lot about incorrect teaching so I feel very lucky to have gone through them to learn the Chinese pronunciation system. In fact, I know one of my Mandarin Blueprint classmates is taking your course! While there's a lot of improper teaching out there, there is fortunately also some good stuff. MB is a character-focused program so it's different in nature from yours, but I thought you might be interested in looking at what they do as a Chinese teacher, if you didn't already know about them. Another great piece of content, and can't wait for the next one! ☺️

Have you ever had a student who could not perceive the subtle differences in sounds that you are trying to convey? If so, how did you overcome such a problem? I'm afraid I would be such a student.

I feel like this applies more for English natives I am Serbian and could pronounce these words even back when I was a beginner, we have very similar sounds and some are the same

I do teach more English native speakers in my personal experience, but I taught a lot of other language natives, too. At the end of the day, the challenge depends on everyone's native language, language learning experience, sensitivity to sound and pitch changes, and different factors. I know there are more phonemes in some languages than others, like Hungarian. Is there any Chinese sound that you find challenging?

@@RitaChinese difference between ri and re, chi and che was the hardest for me, also general the letter “r” took some practice. Other things like zhi, chi, shi, zi,ci,si sounds were quite easy

@@RitaChinese In Czech, many Czech speakers think that zh, ch, shi and j, q, x are easy (including me when I studied at uni) - because we have very SIMILAR sounds, but yet there is some difference... So it's harder to pay attention to it, since the different is quite subtle, but still causes foreign accent.

For me it's the R sound that is the hardest. I am pretty good with j q x, and zh ch sh, at least when just saying a single word, but the R sound kills me.

I think root cause of foreigners having trouble pronouncing Mandarin Chinese words lies with the letters x, q, j, and i as in ri 日. Because there are very few languages if anything with equivalent phonemes. For the x I can only think of Brazilian Portuguese and some indigenous precolombian languages with the sound.

Which x in Brazilian Portuguese? Because it has at least three sounds. I'm not a native Portuguese speaker so I really want to know.

Chinese uses tongue and mouth positions not used in English (or other European languages). Chines is spoken from the back of the mouth and even throat whereas English is spoken from the front. It's all muscle memory - like working out. In Czech we have ř /r̝/ - for many people it seem impossible to say at first, some even give up, but with proper training it's possible. So I belive if you keep it up, you'll be able to say it! 加油!

我已经学习中文学了6个月了。我也就觉得那个中文的 "uo" 和"ou" 跟英文的"oh"比较不同。英文没有中文的"uo",这样我们的美国中文学生常常选择那个中文的"ou"。就是说我们学习中文以前从来没听到"uo"也没有想不同"ou/uo"的原意 。 听得懂吗? 我的中文怎么样?
