Iconic stop-motion armatures and puppets from films like Star Wars, Robocop 2, Starship Troopers, and Jurassic Park are assembled at the Prop Store facility as part of creature master and animator Phil Tippett's collection in search of new homes. It's part of Prop Store's massive Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction taking place next week, and we're on location to take a close look at the meticulous machining and design of these pieces that show a fascinating slice of special effects history.

Holy crap! The Jumanji tokens on that board are the ones I sculpted. (The auction listing does label the tokens as replicas, no need for pitchforks). I'm just excited that something I made is now part of the history of this piece.

These things would just get lost or destroyed. Private collectors usually take good care of them. A museum would be pretty much impossible imo. While it is very interesting to you I doubt that these kind of things would draw the masses.

@@AttilaTheHun333333 You also have to take into account that most props aren't built in "archiving quality". They only need to last the lifespan of the shooting schedule, and so being in a museum or exhibition circuit where they're constantly being packed up and moved, and then stored, and then moved for display somewhere else would cause further damage to them. I've been constantly surprised how....... well, just how crap a lot of props are when you see them with your own eyes. My favourite was a laser rifle from Doctor Who that was just a rough (and I mean rough) outline cut from some cheap nasty plywood, painted grey and with a piece of corrugated cardboard stuck to the side. I can only assume that this was only seen from very, very, very far away.

A museum would be perfectly possible (other museums look after much more sensitive and difficult to care for material) but would require a lot of money. Probably the best hope is that a big collector sets up a museum to preserve their collection for the future.

I wish more modern filmmakers would use model miniature and stop motion effects. I mean, I know Christopher Nolan uses some, but I'd like to see more go back to old-school effects, especially with the updates of modern tech to allow for such effects to be useful.

@DanielS2001
@DanielS2001 4 жыл бұрын
Ohlourdes Padua But stop motion can be just as good looking at CG. Case in point: Coraline. When it was released, people thought it was CG when in fact it was stop motion. In fact, Tim Burton had the stop motion artists for Frankenweenie to make it obviously look like it was stop motion so that people didn't make that same mistake again.

@@DanielS2001 "Good looking" does not magically solve the economics of stop motion which is it is more expensive to do than CGI. Studios can find very cheap digital SFX studios to do that for pennies (can be outsourced abroad for more cheapness). Remember the Sobic movie? The SFX studio responsible for the CGI closed shortly after the film's released...
@DanielS2001
@DanielS2001 4 жыл бұрын
Ohlourdes Padua Cheap doesn’t always mean good either. There are a lot of examples of bad CG that was done because “it was cheaper to do.” (Case in point, a LOT of 90s big budget movies). When you look at something that has model effects, they still hold up better. Yes, it may be more expensive, but it’s also been done cheaply and still look just as good (case in point, the exterior shots of the glider entering New York in Escape from New York. The buildings seen in those shot were just wood, photocopies of buildings that were glued on, colored in with color pencils and greebled with model parts to give the illusion that they were more detail. Even some of the buildings of the Hadley’s Hope colony in Aliens were constructed from cardboard and don’t look any different). The same can’t be said with cheap CG. In fact, what used to take multimillion dollar tech to make shots possible when Star Wars has been drastically streamlined and cheaper to do (you could literally recreate the opening shot of A New Hope using off the shelf parts, a green screen, a camera and a camera slider).

I don't know Mr. Tippett, and so I cannot answer this question in regards to him. However, in a broader view, Mr. Tippett is nearly 70 years old. While we, as a people, are living longer and longer, 70 is still a fair run. At some point, we have to acknowledge that we're not going to be here forever, and so we don't need all the "things" we have in our life. If it were me, I'd rather be in control of how those things are dispensed with, rather than letting a feeding frenzy happen after I'm gone. Mr. Tippett, in working with The Prop Store, probably knows that these pieces will be treated with respect and not just set up in a yardsale somewhere. Again, I don't know Mr. Tippett, so I'm just sharing my own thoughts. But I don't know if it's a logical leap to think there might be something wrong just because he's thinning out his collection.
