My friend in her fifties recently started a youtube channel on frugal living with just her mobile, an ambitful al-50 light and softbox that cost £50, qhot wireless mic that cost £23 and edits in videoguru. I recently gave her my old go pro 12 she now uses. She loves it and its given her a new passion. Meanwhile ive always wanted to make a photography channel, have a canon r5, pocket 3, dji mic 2 and all the efiting software yet havent done anything. Mainly thanks to the overloqd of my day job but still. Shows it doesnt matter what your age or gear is, she did it and I didn't. Motivation and drive matter way more. Really great video, would love to see your editing process. Subscribed to watch more. Keep it up!

Nice to meet you! And you make a great point. Sometimes knowing your craft (like film or photography in this case) can really slow you down because the more you know, the more you can perfect. It’s a curse at times haha! I hope you join your friend some day and start making videos :)

Totally Subscribed ❤ because as a new KZbinr learning to edit.. what you mentioned about waiting a day before posting is gold. Having done almost none of these things other than building my own keylight/lightbox and still managed to grow to 600+ subs and 2000 watch time hours in 8 months I’m pretty sure following most of these tips to get going would have resulted in even better things and faster results ;) The most important part for me, like you said, was just starting to film, and then figuring it out - and by filming I quickly figured out how *not* to do things, which makes it even easier to figure out *what* to actually do, and what works :) The thing that really made «script writing» go fast was just rambling about a topic into my voice recorder app on the phone, transcribe those ramblings and ask chatgpt to make a bullet point list (script outline) of that transcription and using that as a starting point, adding my own flair, and then just record and wing it, not *great* results but good enough for people to find some value in the videos :)
@lilafromyoutubeАй бұрын
Figuring out what not to do is key haha! I like the voice note > transcription > chatgpt workflow! Great idea.
@AndreSjobergАй бұрын
@ Yeah figuring out what’s not important is like 90% of the work ;) Just look at a sound mixer for bands, knot what not to adjust is the most important skill ;) The voice memo transcript chatgpt workflow is surprisingly efficient, so making a video on it in the coming month now that things get a little quiet around christmas :)

Last two minutes are pure gold. - Would love to see a mini deep dive into your audio levels, what you set your voice at and how low (and why) you set the background music at different points. On YT I see lots of videos about lighting & gear, but ended up yolo-ing voice at -6 and music bed at -18 to -30, but no idea if gut instinct is right, wrong or I’m missing a trick.

Making videos for fun and the beginning is a great tip that I'm glad you mentioned some of the stuff I know, but I didn't know it was a tip. Especially how you just said posting at anytime is great, bc time doesn't matter. I figured that out and it is so soothing to my development process to know I can post whenever I can. But not in a lazy way just in a way in the way like how you said it that the algorithm doesn't matter

Mostly fear of not being as good as all these amazing KZbinrs I follow, like you, Peter Mckinnon, Philip Bloom, Levi Allan, Chris Brockhurst etc. Yes, fear of not being that good. But really enjoyed watching this video. Couldn't agree more. Just make a video. Trying to make the perfect video every time will stop you (me) from making one at all (speaking from experience). Make a video, enjoy it, learn from it. The next one will be better. What doesn't make me better is not making videos. Thank you so much for the reminder and for the inspiration. Great to see you back when you started and now. It means we all can progress, if we just make videos. Example - I bought the Weebil S gimbal 5 years ago. I never used it. Too scared, too hesitant, too worried about failing. Recently I was forced by some client work to learn how to use it. It was easy and wow it was great to use. Fear removed. Now it will get many more airings, even though it's 5 years old. Bonkers right! Anyway, thanks again. Feel the fear and do it anyway..........great title for a book!!!

I totally get that it can be an intimidating space to enter, but go watch some of our videos back. We were not as good as we are now (and in years from now we will be better than now) haha. It’s an ongoing process, we all grow and evolve. You can’t compare your chapter 1 to someone’s chapter 20. Don’t aim to make the perfect video, aim to make a video! I’m glad to read you used the gimbal and it wasn’t as intimidating as you thought at first. Same goes for videos, so go apply that experience to making videos :) you got this

I honestly think the worst thing that happened to me since I started making videos was getting sucked down the "how to succeed at KZbin" rabbit hole and stressing about metrics. It killed a lot of joy and stops me from making videos I want to make sometimes because they probably "won't do well". Even though I'm far from starting (been making videos since 2019), this is a good reminder to just have fun with it and not try to play to an algorithm. And what you say about a setup changing constantly is so true. I'm always switching things up - big or small - in my setup. Trying different backgrounds, lenses, etc. Never ending evolution. And the Shure MV7 is a great mic (think that's the one you mentioned.) I've got one and it does amazing at cutting out background noise and removing the room echo.
@lilafromyoutubeАй бұрын
this is exactly why I wanted to make this video. Sometimes I feel like I’m debby downer by being like “NOTHING MATTERS” but I think it’s really liberating when you realise nothing matters and no one cares (yet). Yes I love this microphone!

@ giving it a view now… I have an idea of what I want tbf, I just either need to get the additional bits or try integrate it within our living room… my biggest hurdle I’d say is that I want it to remain set up to minimise that creation friction, and I also want the A-Cam to serve as my webcam also whilst I’m working. I don’t like the height on my A-Cam angle right now as it sits too high above my monitor… I am super picky about it but like you said in your video “it doesn’t matter” lol… so I’m just making videos anyway… I will have a think about what tips I can get from you in your other video 😉

I would love to see the full breakdown, but that is my current blocker...where do you upload the video to?

@ monetize a channel, build a community, get better at making videos…the advice is usually just do it, and i get that, but how to do it? @lilafromyoutubeАй бұрын
great idea! I usually just braindrump my thoughts and then structure it, because I am notorious for rambling and going off course haha. I don’t have a proper script I follow, just points to keep me on track. I don’t storyboard for my tutorials. For the series I filmed, I did no pre-production work at all. It was very unplanned. But in the editing and organisation process is when I am storyboarding a bit to get a good overview of the storylines and structure! I’ll make a video on that once the series is done

Whats holding me back a little is, what if my vlogs are not really valuable to others, but to me I’m sharing a piece of what I’m doing at that time? 🤔

what’s your goal to make vlogs?

You’re wrong about niche not mattering. I have a 180k+ subscriber channel that basically burned into nothingness because the audience is split. Conversely this channel “Skapo” where my theme is monolithic (cool skateboarding), gets more views at 1/10th the subscriber base because it has a more on theme audience. It ABSOLUTELY matters.

I think you missed the point of the video entirely. This video is about finally STARTING to make videos, you’re clearly way farther in that journey. When you’re just starting out, it doesn’t matter, especially not when it’s something you overthink and holds you back.

New subscriber here from Australia 🇦🇺 Loved this detailed video, in fact, I’ve not come across the editing sequence you provided which I truly appreciate. Now I have a starting point of what to do when for an editing workflow. It’s these gold gems that help out the new emerging creators in 2025. YES PLEASE…I would also love to see your entire workflow process as I know nothing about this process but eager to learn and evolve with time. 🫶🏻

I think I figured out Lila’s secret plan: Get compliments on her pretty hazel eyes. 👀 🫵🏼 We’re on to you Lila. 🫶🏼 (Lila is like the female Casey Neistat but shhh…🤫) She’s humble.

I bet she sometimes wishes she was like Casey Neistat, because it would mean that people exclusively commented on her content instead of her body. But here we are.
