This video wasn't created for people to judge the client. Stop. Keep the negative and "funny" comments to yourself. This was meant to educate people. Who cares if she let 30 years pass before coming to this hair doctor?!? You don't know people's situation. My sisters hair became very damaged. Why? She neglected it due to depression. Shit happens. I don't know this clients situation and don't care to comment about it. Thanks for the video and sharing the information. I'm going to begin growing locs. This will help.

If you started growing your locks I'll give you some good advice (besides the advice in this video). Dont fight your locks. Have patience, your locks will lock and grow the way they want and there isnt much you can do about it so let them do what they want. You can seperate if they start matting together but dont fight anything else they do. Stay natural and dont use shampoo and conditioner. I use 1 cup of bakinsoda in 2 liters of water to wash my locks once a week. Wwhen they get a little dry i use 1 cup of apple cider vinigar in 1 liter of water to lightly condition my locks. My hair has never been healthier and ive never been happier. Have fun and enjoy the process. It will take time and patience.

I am only 7 months loc’d, but I have noticed the changes in my hair with me not retwisting every month. My hair is getting thicker! I think it’s hard for some black people to understand that our hair doesn’t need all of that! Our ancestors were not using all of the crap that we are using in our hair today, and their hair was LONG. I only use oils and water in my hair.

Kinky, curly hair textures have a matte finish. Such hair does not have the “shine” associated with straighter hair textures. Most people with kinky curly textures seem obsessed with trying to get their hair “shiny.” They also seem to want it to lay down and be smoother. I saw Diana Ross’ daughter, Traci Ross talking about her hair products. She said “embrace the frizz.” SHE IS RIGHT. Those with kinky curly textures must eventually accept their own natural hair and see it as beautiful. The Scriptures state that Christ had hair like wool. (Revelation 1:14) We wouldn’t think that wool should be straight and shiny. Or that Christ needed the right hairdresser and products. No !!! We want wool to be soft and fuzzy. Same is true of cotton. Silk we expect to be shiny and smooth. Different textures, right? Stop letting other cultures and advertising dictate what your hair should look like. Kinky curly hair has its own appearance which is just fine. Work with that texture and stop being vulnerable to makers of products trying to seduce you into an “acceptable” look. Otherwise your hair will fall out. Or you’ll want to cut it off or cover it with wigs/weaves out of despair.

I feel like you all are forgetting that a lot of us growing up went to hair dressers (the experts) on a regular basis. We went and our hair fell out time after time. The natural hair movement in part started before social media got big when we got sick of being told how to care for our hair and it not working. So we had a natural distrust of the experts telling us what to do because they hadn’t done right by us while still taking our money. So then social media came around and while yeah... some influencers are recklessly telling people to try this and that but others are actual licensed stylists. It’s ziti easy to look at the damage on her hair and judge what she should or shouldn’t have done. But had you been with her you probably would have told her to try different products or stylists too and a lot depends on your income... what you can afford and how much else is going on in your life. The natural hair movement promises ease and freedom but it hasn’t been that way for everyone.

Exceptional video. Much blessing to you for saving the young lady's Locs despite a situation that seemed as bleak is it seemed; most would have advised her to cut it off and start over. My 'douglah boi' Locs are about 4 months in and I use gel, however, I usually end up washing it out within two days because it itches no matter what gel I use. The few times I left my hair alone (without product) it doesn't itch one bit; even when I sweat excessively. With that I am going to try using only the oils as prescribed, which I started today with Coconut and Ylang Ylang hot oil blend....interlocking too. I will report back after some time. Blessings.

+Marcus B I've learned to accept that there are people on this earth single purpose is to throw shade one way or the other. unfortunately social media is a breeding ground for such people. This was one of the reasons I had no desire to be on social media. i was content to keeping my knowledge to myself. My clients were the one that talked me into it. These people negative comments has absolutely no effect on me. THEY DON'T KNOW ME. There rhetoric also has no effect on my life, it doesn't pay my bills, nothing. Apparently they have nothing better to do with their time so let them continue to do what they are good at which is talk shit and throw shade. I on the other hand will continue to what I'm good at. Life goes. To they other people that sees the good in me and what I do, I truly appreciate their love and support. I'm humbled and honored by that. Hotep

I keep telling my friends this who are new to locs. I only use shampoo and olive oil on my scalp and leave my locs alone. I don't use conditioner either. When I retwist I only use water. I've been loc'd for 4 years now. When I need a deep clean (2 times a yr) I use a apple cider shampoo and boil some water to penetrate the locs. Just don't over do it with the styles, washing and retwists.

Osito Kintsugi i would suggest staying away from using wax, not being water soluble, it’s usually harder to wash out of the locs & causes build up. The first year of my locs I did retwist with a cream, I noticed that caused slight build up over time so I switched to gel, which was better but not perfect. Recently, 3 months or so ago I decided I didn’t want to put any products in my locs at all because at the end of the day, they all cause some sort of build up. I switched over to doing my retwists with some Black castor oil with lavender & hot water. I’m about 2 years and 3 months into my loc journey & my hair is doing pretty well of not collecting much build up. You being in the early loc stage I would suggest maybe gel because locs are still usually pretty loose . The more your hair starts to mature, the tighter & stronger your locs will become. Everyone’s hair takes products differently. I’d say just try out what you feel is best for your hair and your preference. You’ll get to learn which methods you like more

I am a newly loc'd lady. I do use leave in conditioner. But, I wash frequently. People do get locs and let go. They use product after product and then wash monthly, IF THAT! Makes no sense to me. Then, go to a salon to get, "snatched". Unfortunately, that's in a literal sense. They get their edges pulled out. I am happy you were able to help this young lady. I can hear her gratitude! I've been growing my locs for over 20 years now and in just two videos and reading your website I gained so much knowledge! I started using black gel and then I heard that it breaks your hair (which it did). I was told that it was the alchohol so I started using gel without. I now have alopecia on the top of my head and edges. When I was a beauty culture student many moons ago, one of my teachers told me that if your scalp is as smooth as a baby's behind, the hair will not grow back. I am currently using a oil based natural product and within weeks I am seeing peach fuzz! I have been praying about my hair growing but not being proactive in the process. I wash my body with Castile liquid pepmint soap and now I will wash my hair with it. I will also add lemon dishwashing soap to my regimen. Thank you!! I also stopped oiling my scalp years ago when somehow the "Black" community was told to stop "greasing" our scalp because it block our pores.😏 I hope to become your client one day!!

I've seen alot of people asking what to use for retwists instead. Just to share my experience. I had locs twice and pulled them out the last time because I did watch alot of videos at that time that advocated for using eco styler gel. Please don't use that as it is so heavy and I found it impossible to get out of my locs. What worked better for a retwist as I learned is just a little light oil and a little bit of honey on mildly damp roots. It sounds odd but it does give the hold and nutrition the hair needs. The mixture is easily dissolvable and washes away as it is natural. It should not be mixed thickly just more like a light syrup consistency. Others say they use natural aloe gel as it's water-based. I haven't used it to know. Some other people have said just a little oil on damp roots also works fine. I also have used a loose two point interlock method to tighten the roots and that worked well too. Good luck everyone.

not trying to be an ass but some of that is ACTUALLY dirt that has had a chance to build up too. Mostly products usage but there is definitely dirt from not washing the dreads all the way down. Some folks scrub the scab good to have it clean but forgot to go back and forth on each individual dread. Not being mean just stating my opinion.

All that product buildup attracts dirt, even if she was washing the whole loc, that dust and dirt's stuck.

Some people just don't know. And as the locologist said, people watch these videos thinking the person knows what they're doing and has the right knowledge for whatever the subject is and then you try it yourself..and when something goes wrong we automatically think it's because of something else. Then you have 50 people's opinion about that and you try out what they tell you to do because you want so desperately to fix the problem..

I have Sisterlocks. My consultant previously advised that I deep condition my locs, but I recently noticed build-up in my locs. I remembered this video and decided to stop deep-conditioning the locs and adding hydrating lotions, etc. I just shampoo and spray my locs with water every few days.

I do my hair every 3 months, wash it every month, I do use leave in conditioner and oil base only in my hair. I'm looking at this video and cant believe the state she got her hair into, that looks like fifteen years of not washing, I'm sorry to say. Well done on the transformation👏👏👏👏

I see people make videos about growing natural hair, they explain it in a way like its hard to grow hair. Some of the women suggest products that's not needed. To grow hair just stay away from heat period, don't eat bad foods, drink plenty of faucet water not bottle waters. Keep hair in twist, use a oil, lightly grease hair keep them in some twist. Hair will grow

I do agree with you that we have to be careful with products, but don't blame the bloggers, social media was not that popular 15 years ago... So I guess she started her locs before beauty gurus even existed. But you did a great job!! I was suprised you were able to get all that build up out of her hair!

Boucles Noires social media was strong in the early 2000s, not as much as today but still influential. With less people calling each other out when someone is doing wrong. Or perhaps she started with social media later down the line, and not right away.

Johanna Delice Um people on KZbin can be fake and give wrong advice. I know quite a few people that have done it. Just because you don't think they can doesn't mean they don't. They even had a girl on KZbin who wears a freelace wig who has many subscribers giving wrong advice and having people believe that's her hair. Another KZbinr saw her in person and realize it was a lace front and not her hair. People must wake up and put trust in no man. You act like people can never lie to you, when a lot can. Just be more wise when it comes to taking care of your hair and don't trust just anybody.

I used a gel for the 1st time recently because I decided to permanently switch from interlocking to retwisting and figured if I used it very lightly I could get a better hold with less chance of buildup. NEVER AGAIN! One single minimal use and my hair was attracting lint and buildup like crazy. I'm going to stick to good old oil and water and hope I can get the buildup out over the next couple of months. The only bright side is its a small patch on some of my locs and not on the full length of my hair.
