Hi! I knew I've seen you somewhere! About 5 years ago, I used to play in Freddy's APA team with Ivan + his wife.

Managing the tangent line is 35% of my game I’ve discovered as a new player, which now will improve. Thank you for the insight.!

Great stuff! Thank you. I guess I’ve been worried if I hit high or low on the cue ball, it would make the object ball shooting line change. So I’ll hit dead center cue ball / but then scratch. Time to drill this out. Thank you!

Whats been blowing my mind is that if you hit the ball thinner the tangent line goes more into the short rail in this example that you have which has felt opposite of my thoughts. So don't undercut the ball! I have been told if you hit the ball thinner, more of the energy stays with the CB going in its original direction.

So you have the right idea but the tangent line is always relevant to the point at which the balls actually make contact. For example, I could miss the shot and avoid the scratch but that wouldn't be the point illustrating you need solid fundamentals and ball pocketing. Once this is learn, the best way to avoid scratching is using top or bottom on the cue ball. This doesn't apply to super thin cuts because like you said the energy stays in the cue ball and will follow the tangent line regardless. Thanks for watching.

Darkside, Thanks for the video. I'm trying to learn how to play 8 ball properly, other than being at the pub smashing balls around I think that your explanation of the tangent lines was good very clear and easy to understand. Looking forward to more videos cheers Newest subscriber

Your videos have helped me be a better pool player than anything I have studied!!! Thank you so much Darkside! I'm fuzzy on "Rolling Cue Ball"? What is the difference between that then hitting high? Or maybe my question should be "what is Rolling Cue Ball? Thank you!

Understanding the tangent line and the effects of draw/follow on it, now you are playing pool, before you were just banging balls around. Tangent line is used for three main purposes: achieving position for the next shot(s), breaking out clusters, and avoiding the scratch.
@thedarksidebilliards

That's absolutely correct. Tangent lines are used for so much more than avoiding scratching. It's really the ENTIRE game and once you master fundamentals and implement this into your game, there is no limit to the success you have at the table.
