Wow I had no idea Superman's boots were designed that way to be the M for Man to his S symbol for Super. That's what I love about your videos, I keep learning new information about characters I've been fascinated by since I was a kid. As for your analysis of Wonder Woman's costume, you covered everything you possibly could in such exquisite detail that it was well worth the wait. Since you covered Superman and Wonder Woman's costumes, I think it's only fitting that you talk about Batman's costume in the next video since he's the one member of the trinity who's costume hasn't been talked about by you yet (at least not as much as the other two). Although, if you have anything more you like to add about Superman's costume I would really like to see that after your Batman video. Unless you want to talk about another superhero's costume that someone else requested instead of Batman which is entirely up to you. :-)

@@ProfessorGeekMC In your "Batman: Arkham Asylum" playthrough, you mentioned that you were having trouble writing a "Stop Screwing With The Costumes" video about Spider-Man because his suit isn't messed around with that often and I agree. Maybe you could do one on Harley Quinn instead because she hasn't worn her original costume in forever. It was fine when they did it in the Arkham games, but it's getting ridiculous now.

Yeah, that Stracynski costume seemed unnecessary. Jackets never seemed to make sense for fighting superheros. Once again, I go back to my favorite artist George Perez as the example of Wonder Woman's costume done right. Great video as always Michael! Look forward to the next one! Maybe The Flash would be a good one to do. I don't understand the need to give this character armor-The movie version and the Injustice version. It seems counterproductive to his power set. Especially for someone who needs to have ease of movement to move fast.

The original Wonder Woman story and character design, and the thought processes behind them, are so iconic that they're recognized around the world and even anime was inspired by them; look at the likes of such classics as Cutey Honey and Sailor Moon, the latter even uses the tiara boomerang attack!

The best example of editors stopping screwing with a costume design is Black Canary. Beginning to today, she's had a number of variations, and heel heights, but the only thing that's consistently gone is her domino mask.

I also feel as though her belt is important because it's her pillar of strength, a reminder that her foundation is divine and it comes from her authenticity, her solar plexus. It's also the physical gold pillar that the eagle stands heroically upon about to take flight.

Damn...i have been obsessing over redesigning Wonder woman and while i already believed the lasso made more sense then her sword and shield i had always been against the bikini. Just thought it created to sexualize the character but now i totally agree everything you said makes sense now its back to the drawing board on my fan fiction design lol

Yeah the lasso should be her go-to weapon. The only thing they should keep from the New 52 is how she could summon her sword and shield from her bracelets. I love the classic and iconic Lynda Carter costume for all its symbolism and I also love the new costume from the movie.

Not giving you a thumbs down, and I agree with you insofar as clearly the pantsuit iterations were a mistake, but I feel WW's current iteration is a really beautiful blend of form (ie, sexy) and function (ass-kicking). The V-shape is there, but now it's a sassy kilt instead of the classic Lynda Carter Bottoms. And the eagle/stylised WW is still on her chest. To me her current iteration more closely resembles her first appearance, while being a clearer call-back to her 'Greek' origins. And in an action film format, it works. Basically, is she a Classical Goddess of Love and War, or isn't she? Also, subscribed. Glad to hear someone approaching comics/film from a Joe Campbell perspective. It's a pity the current crop of writers have apparently decided to 'subvert' anything they learned about the hero's journey, redemption, etc.

I agree! I love her iconic costume and her Rebirth costume. They both work for her. The new costume fits, but if there’s a way they can also make the costume look more like an ambassador, and not just warrior like, that would be great. It does kind of resemble her golden age costume, which I love since it looks like something that can be worn in a parade! The New 52, the Wonder Thong, and the pantsuit were the worst WW costumes.

Personally, I like that she’s beautiful! As a woman, I want my hero to be beautiful and powerful looking like Lynda Carter and OG She-Ra. My favorite artists of Diana are Aaron Lopresi, George Perez, and Liam Sharp. Lopresi makes Diana look beautiful, badass, and he gives her big and expressive eyes which gives her a lot of personality. Sharp makes her look beautiful and majestic and athletic looking. Perez made her a timeless and classic beauty, but he also made her tall and gave her Mediterranean features. Why can’t a woman be strong, independent, confident, confident, and beautiful? I want her to be beautiful, curvy, and feminine. She’s an ideal woman and an icon! The design with the pants was the worst because the pants were leather and she wore a jacket. It didn’t look like something she would wear. I like her original costume, her iconic Lynda Carter costume that she usually has, and all her warrior Princess costumes. Not just the movie costume, but the ones Perez occasionally gave her like in Challenge of the Gods! I knew Carter’s costume was the most familiar one, but I didn’t know about all the symbolism. The symbols make a lot of sense with her character! I hate it when people say it makes no sense for her costume to be American, I’m always like, “do your research! It’s American for a good reason!” I’ve always loved that her Tiara and bracelets (feminine accessories) have power and can be used to help her fight with the bracelets being able to deflect and her Tiara being a boomerang. I agree it should look like a tiara. I prefer her belt as gold too, I hated how they made it silver in New 52. Her colors are supposed to be red, white blue, and gold!

DC Rebirth costume is the best. Giving her the appearance of a warrior while still showing off her beauty. DC Rebirth was the best thing in modern comics, giving us the classic optimistic Superman raising a son with a badass Lois Lane; a fun team up between the sons of Batman & Superman, a interesting new take on Superwoman (Lana Lang being Superwoman was an interesting choice). Sadly DC Rebirth is over and I missed it. So far “Teen Titans Academy” has been really fun to read. Also “Green Lantern” seems to be exploring some interesting aspects. However, Superman comics have yet to go back to the greatness they were during Rebirth under Tomasi & Gleason. Despite this I’m still enjoying the Superman comics and am interested in where the story is going.

Wonder Woman #91, November 1994, Drawn by Mike Deodato Jr. is my favorite. Not ashamed either. Thought it was about time she wore a thong just like a lot of Super Heroines at the time (to me that was sexual progress). Little did I know some men actually have an aversion to viewing sexually appealing images and call for modesty. Today that call for modesty is rampant as comic book heroines are being covered up in the name of feminism and some other absurd moral mentality ( shame for looking at drawn image of a woman due to some misogynist views and disrespect for women). Of course we also have the "practical outfit" people saying the costumes are not practical in battle. Please, this is fantasy, leave practicality out of it. I like my heroines sexy and my heroes strong looking. I have no qualms with a version that is less sexy, I just won't read those. It just grates me when we see something we like and we get shamed for it.

I liked the comment in an issue of Sensation Comics, where Diana suggests that she has the right to wear different clothes for different occasions. I feel she should wear Red for sacrifice, Blue for fidelity, Gold for faith, and White for purity. Not Red, Black, and Silver, which suggests a Mystery Cult engaged in human sacrifice. I like the stylized Eagle that doubles as a Double W. I also liked the version where the stars formed the constellation of Cassieopiea. Given how often we wear leggings, I don't mind options where Diana wears them, or a skirt, even a warskirt in situations where she is facing imminent battle against Apokalips, Genocide, or some other threat that will not bow to loving submission.

Excellent analysis on the significance of these iconic uniforms and how they anchor their character's values, voice and vision to something we all can inherently grasp. Definitely, I think DC's meddling on their most iconic characters since the New 52 debacle has constantly weakened their historic meaning for no reason other than to please shallow and vindictive SJW loonies and Hollywood idiots. Overall, Diana's classic look may never fully return with angry feminists chomping at the bit to eliminate her obvious feminine appeal that serves as a painful remainder of ideal that they will never obtain. So, girls must never look to that balanced beauty and mutual kindness that Diana once served. Plus, her beauty had too long pleased male audiences wicked libido. So, now we are left with an angry man hating violent warrior that serves a more masculine ideal of soy boys and third wave feminists who never cared to honor or respect Diana's actual legacy. P.S. Next up on the costume screwup list, I would like to see you tackle are Harley Quinn (why mess up the classic Dini design), Super girl (pick one style, please) and perhaps in the positive critique side, you could observe Cat-woman recent look vs her old looks.

Her earrings used to have powers of some kind, (like her other accessories, like her bracelets) but I don’t remember. After the 80’s reboot, I think they were just there. I don’t mind the earrings, sometimes they work and I like that they make her look feminine, but I don’t think they have deeper meanings like her other accessories.

Originally her Red Star earrings were communicators. Back when the Amazons were a science-fiction race of advanced women living on Paradise Island. The red stars became little red balls, why I couldn't imagine. Rarely mentioned today. But all of her accessories were magical / technological originally. DC and Marvel assume all pantheons of gods are alien super-being races anyway.

If there is something that Marston intended and that should be kept is that she is both a feminist icon AND her stories should be about the feminine identity, except in a much more profound and nuanced way than the golden age. She should absolutely be an activist and the only reason why she stopped being one was because DC quickly became fearfull of the conservative american society.
