I was inspired by Your detailed presentation and breakdown. With all your data and insights in hand I presented this concept to my wife. She listened intently and did not even interrupt. After I made my pitch she sighed deeply , rolled her eyes, and told me to find a new less expensive hobby.

I'm 47 was considering taking up MTBiking again, need new everything. Priced it out and then reconsidered because I'm not 20 something anymore. So now considering comeing back to golf, again still need everything new. I hear everyone complain about the cost of golf clubs, but I'm not seeing it solely on club cost comparing to MTBikes which can run 5k+ starting for a decent bike, that you buy a new one every few years and 10-15k fir top of the line. Now, there are no greens fees in MTBking but there are lift ticket fees if you go to a true mountain but still, I say all this to say its all relative, and I still think Golf is not that expensive.

I used my $200 set from walmart for the entirety of high school golf team and for roughly 20 years. I finally upgraded this year and gained a huge jump in distance and started gaining a ton of consistency. technology changed a lot in 2 decades. Still played well with the cheap clubs but found that I reached new levels with the better technology once I found my groove.

I upgraded one club group at a time and found it to be a great way to transition. First club switched was the putter, because its the club I use every hole and the most, then added some wedges for short game improvement, flipped to driver, fairway woods and hybrid next, and finally changed out the irons. Helped prevent fully readapting my game to new clubs every-time.

You'd have to be a high roller to upgrade an entire bag of new high end clubs every 2 years. I keep my clubs for about 5 years on average and try to rotate new purchases (driver OR irons OR putter, etc) every year so the cost is staggered over the 5 year duration.
@GageDrums
@GageDrums 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the putter is one you don't just change out every couple years either.. Once you've gotten so used to how it performs its hard to want to change to another. Not saying don't upgrade from a cheap set, but once you get your first higher end putter, I don't really see a reason to want to swap it out. Especially if you were fitted for it

After playing for 20 years I finally upgraded the whole bag at once for about a 3500 total. Pre full bag upgrade I did the cheap of the shelf set from the local sports store. Then always upgraded bit by bit as I went. Putter 1st upgrade, then driver, then wedges, then irons. Every so often switching out clubs, but always used pre owned stuff (except putter). Seemed to help slowly develop a self taught game. Now shooting on a 10 handicap with a goal of 1-5 next season.

I started to play two years ago. I didn't want to pay crazy money but didn't want a box set. Decided to go with Gigagolf (online store). Purchased their version of Ping G30s 4-SW, their version of the Rocketballz 3-5 woods, their version Rocketballz 3-4-5-6 hybrids, and four wedges. All with midsize grips, graphite shafts with online custom fitting. Total price, $550. Oh and they threw in a stand bag. Great fit and finish. My brother in law (3 handicapper) who's a Ping fanatic was impressed by how well the irons and wedges felt and played. Of course the prices are somewhat higher now but still much cheaper then the big boys. So far they've served me well.

I would never pay an extra $4k for a miniscule upgrade. The problem I have by getting great deals is my clubs are all stock instead of fitted, but I do pretty well.

Great Video, I started 5 years ago with a Wilson set of clubs from a garage sale for like $75 and shooting around 95-100 a round, then three years ago I got a Taylormade M2 set (irons AP-9 and cleveland wedges 56 and 60 then the 3,5 wood and Driver) at a garage sale for a good price of $600 and I have been currently shooting around 83-85 and now I have been battling myself with spending the $1300 price for a set of just irons....(P790 Taylormade) to hopefully bring me closer to the 80 and below average....I am having a hard time with wanting to pay that much for just irons but I do feel my current ones are just not where they need to be anymore with grooves worn down and all around wear and tear of the clubs, also I need to get them re-gripped but I don't want to spend that money if I am just going to get new irons.....ahh so many decisions Great video, if you have any recommendations or thoughts let me know. I think I just need to pull the trigger on the new set, I just don't want to be disappointed in the long run if I don't see results you know....This sport is addicting and can empty pockets quick....!

First set was a starter from Wilson in the late 70's - $60. Then a used improvement set in the 90's, Then a fitted set of clones in the late 90's with a Big Bertha driver and 3w. That lasted until 3 years ago. Current set is a mix of gently used hybrids, fairway woods and wedges, a new driver and a new iron set.

I know the goal here was to get a "rough estimate" of cost but it would be interesting to incorporate strokes gained somehow. Like the example of the game improvement wedge, how many of those 5 strokes were driver vs irons vs approach vs putting. spending a few dollars to fill in gaps in the bag is way more effective then dropping 5k on a "new set".

Im a 19 HCP Only been playing for 8 months. I spent 4k on my bag set up once I broke 100 with my Callaway starter set. Fully fitted to me(im 6'3) I needed longer clubs. I have also invested about 800 in lessons to improve my game. I think the money is better spent on lessons than new clubs. If you can have an open mind and do what the coach is telling you to do it will save you strokes! While I love my 4k bag of clubs the lessons improved my game more than the clubs. money is better spent there and is almost a cheat code. I have played with guys that have played golf for Years and never had a lesson and some of them to this day have a hard time breaking 100...

Never had a lesson other than listening to my buddy who was a scratch golfer. I've gotten down as low as a 10 but stay around 13 now; good enough golf to go play anywhere and not feel like I am paying to get beat up. All that being said, I completely agree with you. I often wonder how low I'd have gotten with a few real lessons along the way; I'm now 61 still holding 13 and have about 3k in the clubs thanks to ebay, new from the store would be well over that $5k mark. Bag is complete, including bling, and should be the last one I ever buy in this lifetime.

@@TMar1961 absolutely… I’ve been playing golf since April. Took 7 lessons and I just shot my best round at a 86 with new irons. Once I get those dialed in there’s no reason I can’t shoot an 80. Before lessons I couldn’t break 100. Best $800 I’ve spent on golf was learning how to hit the ball well and having someone correct my bad swing.

In my opinion. I think any brand name clubs from the last 5-10 years are going to play roughly the same. Despite what the marketing tells you, the drivers are not adding distance every year. They have compression rating restrictions just like metal bats. I bought a 7 year old 3 hybrid calloway xr that a shoot identically to my buddy's brand new calloway mavrik. A good swing produces a good shot with any club.

One of the worst things you can as a beginner golfer is not getting fitted for clubs. Make the investment early and you'll be thankful you did. You don't have to go crazy with upgraded shafts and such, just get some decent stuff that's right for you. I spent 10 years using used, garbage clubs with shafts that were not right for me; a hodge podge mixture of Craigslist purchases and hand-me-downs from friends. I wish I would have invested sooner. Also, don't listen to your friends about what clubs you should get unless they're a pro club fitter. Go talk to an expert and avoid all of the nonsensical advice from friends that would kill a puppy to shoot 80 or lower.

I just got a new set of Pings last year. Snapped my stiff shaft after 5 rounds of golf, upgraded to an extra stiff Mitsubishi shaft (nothing super premium just under $250) and heard it crack after my drive. My hand speed is over 115 on a good day. I take very good care of my clubs, but I think I need an even better shaft at this point for my driver. I was advised to upgrade it after hearing that crack because when I got fitted, my hand speed was in the high 120’s. Any suggestions on shafts? Note: I can hit my 9 iron 200yards- which seems cool but playing with my P at 150 out isn’t always fun.

It's true, golf clubs are crazy expensive especially drivers and putters because they promise transformation in your game. Don't be silly, get lessons. Even get fit for clubs so that you know what you need. I was fit for irons 2 years ago and it cost $120 for the fitting. And I've learned what sort of shafts that I need in general for my driver. It's not fancy but it works. The thing is, I refuse on principal to spend $600 on a new driver. So I buy 2nd hand. When my brand issues a new model every 2 years, I shop for the previous model because the guys who need the new one want to sell their old one and you can get them from used club dealers for about half price. Also, I've been using my $300 driver for 6 years now and have no plans to replace it. I did have new grips put on though.

Personally I would say a player should look into changing/upgrading clubs for every 10 shots they knock off their average score or when their score plateaus until they are in the low 80's or upper 70's. I started the year off with my old DCI irons from the 90's (high school) then to a gifted set of Bombtech irons. Little change in the score. Then I bought new Mavrik irons and I dropped 10 shots (mid 90's to mid 80's) in about a month. Of course this won't work for everyone and I hit the course and range hard this year which helped lower my scores but I don't think I would've shot 84 (lowest ever) with my older set of irons.

You need swing/ball speed to really take advantage of alot of the separating features in irons/drivers, not to mention having a swing that ensures conilsistent and solid impact. I hit blades on a simulator about 10 years ago and the measurable were terrible because my swing was jacked. Put that money to lessons first and then revist the massive price tag clubs

I agree that beginners can hold off before buying the latest name brand clubs, but there's another middle ground between the $250 set and the $5000 high end set: direct to consumer (DTC) companies. Reputable DTC companies like Maltby, Sub70, Haywood, Takomo, and PXG (0211 line) make very good brand new clubs that you can order customized to your shaft model preference, flex, length, and lie. Even a high handicapper will probably benefit from clubs better suited to their swing especially if they have unusual dimensions. Most DTC companies don't spend the $$$ on marketing and sponsorships that the big brands do so they can bring great products to the consumer for much less.

But would a high handicapper know what flex, length, lie they needed? Asking for a friend 🤣

I’ve got a 500 dollar set of clubs that suit me fine. They aren’t the best obviously, but neither am I I play golf to get outside and hang out with my friends. I’m not chasing some awesome score.

You should put the upgraded shaft in your he Nitro clubs to see if that makes a difference.

I like buying things 🤷‍♂️😂 played some cheap second hand clubs for 10 months then broke 100 3 times on the bounce, decided to treat myself to some zx5 with project x shafts second hand of course. Not broke 100 since 😂 they look good though

None of us “need” a 5k set of clubs. If you do something as a hobby for long enough though, it just adds up over time.

Love the math! Cheaper clubs are made cheaper. I would crack faces, break hozels etc. My 909D3 is still in great shape and I couldn't tell you how many thousands of balls I've hit with it

For the average golfer, expensive clubs do nothing to lower ones score. Nothing. No more than a Rolex tells better time than a $10 digital watch. For the beginner, there are many expensive club choices. Unbelievable value. My clubs are a bunch of old ones I have collected over the years. For example I bought my driver used 8 years ago. So about 15 years old. Could I use new one? Well, sure. lol. My putter is the original Odyssey 2 ball. Probably more than 20 years old. Could I use a new one? Actually, no. But last week I played 9 holes at my course and had 8 pars and a bogey (on a long par 4 I can't reach in 2 so really a par 5 for me).

I’d just add if you have a 90 mph+ swing speed and can top 100 mph with your driver then the box set won’t last. You might go to the range and hit one and your driver head goes further than the ball … don’t as me how I know

Better clubs doesn't necessarily make a better golfer. You can drastically drop scores using a "good" set of used clubs that roughly fit your swing and don't cost 5 grand, and spend a few hundred bucks on LESSONS from a local golf pro.

Depends on how much you enjoy the game and your skill level, everyone knows the rich guy who buys clubs every other year and can't break 90 to save his life but I've never seen a really good golfer using cheap equipment. When you get good at golf, you can really see and feel the difference between a high quality club and cheap junk.

Interesting. Had a set of Staff clubs years ago the shafts were so thick it was like setting a telephone pole up. I had no clue then what they weren't doing for me. I just thought I sucked for a couple years. I bought a set of Callaway irons S2H2 approved by the Ex wife, I then turned into the beast. It was a night in day transformation my scores were dropping like a prom dates panties. I'm just now, getting around to getting a new/used set. I did sign up for a few lessons back in the day which had been improving my score until I found out my Club pro started drinking more than I did and rarely came to another lesson. As a matter of fact he just disappeared. The club house would would get all pissed off about him not showing up, then set me up with a nice pile of balls letting me hit until my forearms resembled Popeye's. IMO does a set of NEW clubs help yes it does. Warning Don't start chasing a few yards more distance can get pricey.

Lol didn't know mr short game went to MIT. Cost of used clubs are really going to come down since the pandemic surge. In my opinion you are crazy buying new clubs that perform no better than clubs from the last 8 years.

Your initial estimate still didn't account for all the extra accessories - balls, tees, rangefinder, alignment aids, greens fees, range balls, clothing, shoes, towels, gloves etc. Add another $400-$500 to that start-up cost. Golf can certainly be expensive - as much as you want it to be - but the great myth of golf is that you can buy a better game.
