I repaired the AC in my '09 OBXT 2 years ago. All of the indie mechanics wanted $150 just to diagnose it, for less than that I bought a set of manifold gauges, vacuum pump and some florescent green oil. Turns out a bolt went through the AC condenser coil. It was a fairly easy fix thanks to a bunch of KZbin videos. Since there was already a hole in the condenser I wasn't worried about recycling the refrigerant. All the tools and parts were under $300 and just a few hours of my time. 2 years later and it still blows cold air.

You are meticulous and I appreciate that, the sequences are very well done. I am an hvac tech, not specialise on cars but if I did a such job I would change the drier accumulator instead of the the thermo expansion valve. This canister is located between the out condenser line and the thermo expansion valve. This devise catches the mecanical debris and have a disicant element. This part is always replaced when we install a new compressor to extend its durability. The TXV seems in good shape, I think sincerely cleaning the plunger was enough. I understand that every tech has his way to do jobs.
@spelunkerd3 ай бұрын
That's a good point. In many cars, the receiver dryer is integrally built into the condenser. Having said that, when he pulled the old one out I didn't see it. The new unit shown later in the video has a drivers side pillar that might be the integral receiver dryer. I find it interesting to see how standard HVAC methods aren't always followed in the auto industry. For example they often don't do a deep micron vacuum, and some even flush with compressed air. They seem to get away with it, if only because the systems in a car are so much smaller than typical HVAC units in other industries. I was wondering how one distinguishes low pressures caused by low charge from the low pressures of a failing compressor. Both would respond with a high duty cycle....
@spelunkerd3 ай бұрын
At the end of the video he shows the receiver dryer and takes it apart, it was integral to the condenser.
@yacineelyas87563 ай бұрын
@spelunkerd Yes, you made the right correction to my points. And yes, flushing the system with air is not the best thing to do. Dry nitrogen is the best and the only way. Thanks for correcting me. I think this guy is one of the best Subaru's mecanic I ever saw on KZbin.

I just did this job on my 04 Outback, and the evaporator, although easy to see after removing the glovebox, was not easy to get the plastic housing off to remove it - I gave up trying to reach the hidden screws (and thinking that, even if i got it off, i wouldn't be able to put it back on). I ended up just flushing the evaporator, and replacing everything else, like you did.

I told the service tech that my air didn't seem to be cold for a few minutes after starting .. he advised the mechanic would check it out. He came back and advised they found a small leak and were going to replace the compressor and the thermal expansion valve. Problem is they have the compressor in stock, but no expansion valves and he said 2 other customer cars were parked there waiting for the same part. Put me in a free loaner and advised he would call when the part was in... I noted you replaced the evaporator core also... would it be a good idea to have mine replaced during this repair ? It's a 2020 model year with 85K Good thing about all my repairs and parts, they are covered as I bought a 8 yr 120K warranty when I purchased it new... so that's a good thing.

I once convinced Subaru corporate to replace the A/C compressor on my 2014 Forester after demonstrating (not entirely to the local dealership's satisfaction, mind you) that it was blowing warm air despite a full charge. Got it back and found the problem had not gone away, so I inspected the RELAY BOX and FUSES. A quick swap of the A/C relay with a known-good one brought the new compressor instantly to life. So I essentially got it a free replacement on a six-year old vehicle, lol.

Question out there. If the compressor had oil already in it, and he ran a vacuum turn on the system before charging it, wouldn't he have had to have had oil back in the system again? I remember him making a comment about a valve and releasing something or other, but I'm not sure.
@MrSubaru13873 ай бұрын
It pulls very little oil out of the system. The machine has a bottle of new oil and waste oil. After pulling the vacuum, it dumps any pulled oil in a measured container. Then you can inject new oil of the same amount before charge if needed.
