Once I replaced my desire for belt rank with a genuine curiosity and dedication to Jiu Jitsu, everything changed for me and it's made learning and training much more enjoyable and much easier to remain consistent. Both due to a lack of internal pressure & I look forward to learning now because of it.

I knew I was ready for my Blue and Purple when I went to tournaments and ran the competition out the door with straight submissions. Those were the moments that proved I was above my white and blue belt peers. I've been a Purple belt for over a year now and I know I'm not even close to brown. This belt will take years, but it's by far the most fun I've had in BJJ.

I was ambivalent on receiving my blue belt. While I felt my defense was coming along, I couldn’t hit any submissions except for triangles/mounted triangles or the RNC. In fact, before the lockdowns I was a 3-stripe white belt that wasn’t flexible enough to do a triangle. I took the 14 months off to work on my flexibility and rolled with a friend and nephew to work on new techniques. I think the moment I stopped trying to win in sparring, I was able to try new things and open up to trying different submissions (that and my rolling partners know that I’ll go for the triangle). I had gotten my 1st stripe for blue belt last month (7 months since my blue belt promotion) and I truly did not feel ready as I feel lost in respect to what I should work on.

Just saw your video on white belts injuring people . Best safety rule I’ve had at a Dojo was “ it’s your job to take care of your partners safety and if you cause injury to your training partner and they take weeks off to recover - you have to take that time off too - no training “ this and other safety rules make a huge difference. Keep up your interesting videos - glad you can appreciate my old school experiences.

Great video man, came just in time for me! I hope you keep making content, it’s very well thought out and very wise advice. I got stuck in the mode of thinking that I was ready for my purple, especially once I started keeping up with the upper belts I thought I must be ready. It really clicked in though, how individual the difference in everyone’s development is. For me, I just a accepted I’ll be a tough blue belt and sit in the sun for a while and enjoy that. I’ve decided to just focus on getting better, being tougher and being more technical. Just because I submitted a purple belt doesn’t mean that I am a purple. And once I accepted that and stopped caring about getting that next belt, my game got way better and bjj became even more fun (didn’t think that was possible!)

I’ve been at blue for 3.5 years and I feel that the promotion to purple is on the horizon (next year maybe). I think you get a feeling that things are clicking and your instructor just has to see it, but you can’t force it. The great thing about bjj is I train with all belts, so it really doesn’t matter that I’m a blue belt. If this were kung fu or something you are restricted and not taught advanced technique. Not so in bjj, so if you’re really that good you should be rolling the purple belts anyway.

Great Video. I started BJJ in 1999. I got my blue belt in 2002. Shortly after getting my blue belt I started getting small injuries. I eventually got my shoulder separated by a first day white belt that swan dived on me. I started back in January 2020 only stopped from March 2020-Mid May 2020. I have been training nonstop from May till today. I have been really focused on my purple belt and finally realized about 5 months ago there is no way I am ready for a purple belt. This realization helped me see my holes in my own game. I started to objectively look at my abilities. In the last 4-5 months I just started putting myself or stating in reality compromised positions. After doing this I feel I really am starting to have some noticeable growth in my overall game. My point here is as soon as I stoped focusing on my next promotion I actually started focusing and working on my skill and my skill started to increase. Now if I wait another 2-4 years as a blue belt I will be an awesome blue belt beating purples and maybe the average brown belt. My current instructor always says, “don’t be the purple belt constantly being tapped by blue belts, be the purple belt that constantly taps the brown belts and the occasional black belt.”

When I reached a year of 6 days a week, sometimes 7 if I do two open mats, I had some belt envy for blue, not gonna lie. Then I realized I like not having expectations put on me by others. New white belts coming in? ‘Hi this is my first week too!’ Haha sandbagging? Maybe, but I don’t control the promotion and we don’t do stripes for adults. Last year I competed in masters 1 with a guy 6 years younger than me. He was strong and fast but won me by points. This year I’m masters 2 and want to compete again with 40+ at least once, maybe twice, before i get the belt gauntlet. If the color of my gi doesn’t affect how much fun I’m having, then lack of color on my belt won’t either. Osssss 🤙

Yes, this a common probably in art. Instructors have no real rime or reason why they are promoting students. I recommend to students when visiting a school, ask lots of questions related to curriculum and structure. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for! Random, question! I'm a white belt in Germany and training almost 5 years twice a week consistently. I even take private lessons and it will still take me another 5 years to get blue. Only the very talented guys, who train 6 times a week can eventually make it to blue in 3 years. I don't get the hurry and why most Americans talk about 2 or 3 years for getting the blue belt.

Good video, especially after my bjj academy's belt ceremony today n seeing a 3-stripe white belt get promoted to blue belt, I'm a 4 stripe white belt n 2.5 years in it. I don't think I'm going to see myself earning the blue belt next year as something special vs eaerning it this month in December 2023. It hurts, because it's 2.5 years.

I just started BJJ, but I did Taekwondo for a long time. It's very different how belts are earned. In Taekwondo, it's mostly through rote memorization. You know you're ready, because you have a checklist of forms and techniques. If you can complete that checklist, you're ready. BJJ is very much undefined. It's great, because you aren't locked in to a set curriculum. But it does make it harder to self-assess if you're ready for a test.
@tededo

Tito Ortiz once showed up at a BJJ school to train, but Ortiz does nogi, and the school does gi only. They surely trained with him and learned a ton. ortiz has no BJJ gi belt. But he's hell of a grappler. Frank Shamrock was scheduled to train with a BJJ gi school and the respect they gave him for his grappling skill was unparalle, he respectfully out-grapple all of em. Same for Brock Lesnar and few others. Paraphrasing Dahaner, people don't care if you have a black belt (...) you want to be damn good at jiujitsu.

Last tournament I did (blue belt) I submitted all 4 opponents and won gold. I’ve competed before at blue belt and done the same exact thing before People in the gym are making comments that I’m close I just feel my game is not very complex and people in the gym are getting better at defending against me (making me feel like I’m not easy for purple) But tournaments I did well against people I don’t train everyday with… any thoughts? Really who cares about belts? I train because it’s a productive hobby, my training partners are my friends, and I like strangling people BTW- feel like belt tests are retarded… Jiu jitsu isn’t about memorizing techniques… it’s about how you perform while rolling. Your thoughts?

"If you think you're ready that tells me you're not ready" I have to disagree here. If a grappler is doing well in class as well as competition and is putting in the time and commitment and feel they're ready to progress, he/she should atleast be presented with an opportunity. You don't go to university and just study and have your lecturer say "we will tell you when you should take an exam, it may be 2 years or 5 years from now" Stop treating bjj ranks like majestic creatures. Let's face it, every individual's journey is different. Some are fighters, some are teachers and some are hobbiests.
@ChasenHill
@ChasenHill Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts. I 100% agree with you that everyone's journey is different. If you've watched any other videos, I've always said this. My statement comes from 13 years of teaching Jiu-Jitsu and teaching thousands of students up to this point. The vast majority of students (that I've encountered) who feel disgruntled regarding their progression progress (stripes or rank) fit that statement from the video. These students feel they have reached a proficient skill level to be awarded the next rank when their internal perception of their skill still needs to align with their instructor's criteria to grant them the next rank. This often leads them to harbor resentment toward their instructor and the promotion process. This can lead students to think there is a "conspiracy" against them. BJJ ranks are absolutely not majestic creatures. (I don't recall ever making this statement). If you attend a university, you have to demonstrate an obtained amount of knowledge (exams, quizzes, etc). It's the same in Jiu-Jitsu if you have to demonstrate and develop the proper skills to receive a new rank, which the grading criteria can and should absolutely should be adjusted based on each student's journey. You can't say because I've been attending all the lectures, participating in every lab, and I've put hours in studying, now you "should" award me my university degree. You've proven obtained knowledge by passing exams and quizzes. The "I'm ready for my next belt" student is equal to the I "should be awarded my university degree". Sure there are expectations to every statement; I'm talking about the masses from my experience with these individual students.
