Some of my most popular upload have one of the worst view retention + click rate. I understood it’s because they are “getting super recommended to strangers” vs my core audience who do stay all the way. These videos still get views regardless.

here's what you didn't account for... The higher view video had a higher view duration in its first 500 views and the CT was higher. After it was served to a broader audience, it didn't convert as well and numbers dropped.

You say it doesn't depend on thumbnail, but then at 4:40 you say if only 2 out of 100 people click then it wont be promoted. It all goes back to thumbnail once again because thumbnail and title is what makes people click in the first place.

I have been on KZbin for 18 years and my growth has been. Well doesn't reflect the years I have been on KZbin lol. Your channel is the first channel I have enjoyed watching. You help describe the ins and outs of how to grow your channel. You present it in a clear concise way that doesn't talk down to your audience or is distracting. I thank you. Now I just have to find the time to grind out the data. I honestly have always been so busy with real life or just figured I could not keep up with the bigger channels that it was not a priority. I am finally starting to change that way of thinking. "Old dog new tricks" and all that. Looks like I have number crunching to do. Only have close to 3,000 videos to do it for lol.

I like when KZbinrs say it’s not about luck, but it’s about dedication in the grind and what’s funny is I do think you have to put in hard work to increase your chances of getting lucky if that makes any sense. I posted the exact same video and two different KZbin channels and the only difference was the KZbin channel that it was posted to the title the tags the time and the hashtags everything else was identical. One video got seven views while the other video got 2500.

Yes, title, the description, the tags it all matters, when the video is done the thumbnail must be interesting and the tags must be relevant there are alot of tools and websites to find and choose good tags for description and even the title, in the end the video's first 30 seconds matter as well, if the you tuber can keep the viewer engaged for 30 seconds then only the you tube counts the view count correctly and sends to other viewers to see, all in all even if 2 videos are giving the same Information with same value in it, the other video might out perform if the you tuber is smart, and even if it doesn't then just upload another video.

Luck is just odds and probability. Do some people get "lucky" and do all the right things without knowing, and blow up overnight? Sure, it happens. But you shouldn't bank on it. Just like if you were an investor in the stock market, you should manage your luck. If you work smart, consistently, and hard on the things you can control, eventually you'll get "lucky". There's a cool quote: "luck is just preperation meeting opportunity"
@EyeSpyFitness

@marcus-jones Love the analogy and quote! Great video Marcus, I'm really struggling with titles right now just when I thought I had momentum. I've been using google docs, trends, TubeBuddy, KZbin and I feel like I'm getting worse with my titles when I know my videos are getting a little better each time. This is crazy I feel like I would be better off with no tools like I did in the beginning and just guess for the most part and it was ok. Now I have data for retention but titles are killing me! I look at youtube data and now I'm changing titles probably too often. I HAVE NOT FOUND ONE DECENT VIDEO ON MAKING GOOD TITLES! It seems all YT Teachers say exactly the same thing to make good titles. They go through the motions, but they don't get into the details and the numbers and what they represent especially with the YT help tools apps and services. So many tools and so little advice. I enjoyed the video thanks

Thank you so much for this analysis! In your "viewers" circle - you mean the impressions analytic correct? because "views" are after the click if I understand right? So if I see a high number of impressions but low CTR and low views, it means my thumbnail and title weren't that good and failed the second test - but if I see even higher impressions + low CTR but high views, it mean they were good and passed the second group test
@ATRestoration
@ATRestoration 11 ай бұрын
KZbin measures multiple viewer behaviours, not only 2. For example, how long they watched, how many videos they watche after your video, did they leave the platform after your video or not. If you don´t know it, the data can be confusing. The main focus is viewer satisfaction.

I think this is my best organic performing video to date, which tells me a lot. Thanks for this video Marcus, it's opened my eyes a little. Edit: I've just checked it again and people click off just before it gets to the whole point of the video, which is a clip of a Rocky film skit. I feel they've missed out lol.

Becouse algorithm pushes my first uploads and then Becouse of bad rates algorithm things fuc.k this channel im gonna ignore all his new updoates? I really dont know what to do...
@a.aspden
@a.aspden 10 ай бұрын
This is exactly what I noticed as well. It seems like YT does a same sort of "testing" phase for new channels and if you aren't scoring high enough numbers within an audience category, then YT effectively ends your channel pushing. This made me really think about making higher quality videos instead because YT was basically inflating my channel's worth during it's initial testing phase (seemed like a little over a month since the first upload I did). Or maybe I will just make a whole new channel altogether if making higher quality videos with less uploads doesn't work. Good luck!

@Marcus Jones does KZbin suppress or not push videos that get flagged for a copyright strike right away? Like if I upload and content ID immediately flags my video, is the video just automatically basically dead with no views from there on because it got flagged just or unjustly? Or does stuff like this not affect the videos performance at all in terms of views and being pushed by the algorithm?

Wrong, sir. that 67 views with the 16 percent ctr might have simply been because youtube didn't promote that one. I have some shorts I've made with a 50 percent choose to view with only a handfull of views because the short simply wasn't shown for longer than 30 minutes, while one published at the same time will get 1.5k views, and another 2k. It's as if the one slipped through the cracks, didn't get a spot in the feed while the others did.
@Marcus-Jones
@Marcus-Jones 11 ай бұрын
Yes, maybe KZbin didn't promote it, but that's BECAUSE the video wasn't clickable enough, or wasn't retaining people, or the video idea isn't interesting or unique enough (i.e. people didn't want to click on it). In this video I show you how you can have a high CTR stat, but a low click through rate in the real world.

I've got a medium sized channel based around mountain bikes and trials. This last year (and especially this January) has seen a huge reduction in views and I just can't work out why. Annoyingly with my content being quite a high effort activity that is also weather dependant it means I can't always make the videos I/my audience want. That said, I have a few videos over 1 million views which is great. I recently tried to do a "sequel" to my second highest viewed video only I updated it to combine e-bikes which is a huge topic in the MTB world right now. I really thought if any video could do well it's this one...It tanked! Instead of 1 million views, it barely got 5k. What would you say to someone whose content choice is often out of their hands?

Your thumbnails are click baity without telling me anything. Instead of, "Can this bike make me win", change to, "Can the blah blah make me win". I now know the bike you're talking about and you're going to talk about the pros and cons of it. The other one sounds like a time waster.

@@BillyBigBollocks-u7g I don’t put the model of the bike because I figure a lot of people won’t even know a Meta Vtt2 or an Inspired Hex etc are even bikes to begin with. It was my opinion that keeping it broader with just “bike” would let people know that these weird looking things are indeed bikes. I think I do pretty well skirting the edge of being click bait though, I try to find a fairly exciting (as much as possible anyway) and hype that up a bit…I don’t lie anyway. Other than a couple of videos where I forgot to grab a photo and couldn’t find a decent screenshot I thought my thumbnails were fairly decent

I have never had a 15% CTR even with a warm audience. My thumbnails and titles must be horrible.

I got tired on working on complicated and bunch of photos thumbnails. Now I just use a straightforward title, single photo, blend and a few words.

It’s harder for a type beat channel because naturally people leave after so long and where it’s repetitive it’s very hard to find out what made them leave unlike a dynamic video where you can see the chapters and points that are not desirable. Idk how I made one of my videos do almost 500 views in 5 hrs but after that it’s been down hill again. I’m hoping and praying. My beats are just as good as some of the producers in my niche if not better. I’m almost convinced some of it’s luck because some new channels blow where others don’t and restart. Consistency is always good.

Same boat.. been uploading consistently on 2 different channels for over a year and I got the initial push every new channel gets but now I'm just uploading to get 300-400 views and then the beat stalls.. stats are pretty good but no blessing from the algorithm. Things have changed massively since 2020-2021 when it looked like stats actually mattered for YT to get impressions. Now it looks like nothing really works anymore. Just keep at it man. We're at least getting better beat by beat.

Sorry to hear to man. Def more success if getting email list, networking, selling/promoting kits and free stuff. A lot of producers can't be successful with a type beat channel but make a living. It's possible!@@DrDeeeeep

I didn’t do research, but I had a feeling this was happening. I’ve seen crap channels with very poor and boring videos with poor production value, get picked up. I KNOW of a person who’s channel (not videos) did well sub-wise, but he has barley any views on videos too. KZbin doesn’t promote quality like you think they should.

All the numbers I used in this example were purely to illustrate the concept. So yeah, it might not always be 1000 or 100 or whatever... I just chose easy round numbers for the sake of this video

you're video explains very well why small youtubers are suffering, since we don't have a "panel" to test the videos yet, and since youtube don't trust us enough to show them to a brand new audience@@Marcus-Jones

I have a perfect example of what you’re talking about. As a small, new KZbinr (only 16 videos uploaded), I’m averaging between 200 and 350 views per video. My latest video has a low click through rate, but when I hover over the little green check mark, a window pops up that says, “This video is reaching a wider audience on KZbin, leading to a lower click through rate than usual. Wider audiences are often less likely to choose to watch a video, but the lower CTR is not hurting this videos of you count.“ So there’s a validation for your theory.

So… You should have high quality thumbanails and videos, you should just judge it differently. I think we got clickbated.

Hi Marcus!! How are you? I have a particular question. I published a video, and the about, 5 hours later, ive realized that i didnt uploaded the edited thumbnail, therefore there was like a very bad beggining performance for that video. Then I uploaded the correct one, but then I kept thinking that maybe Ive already screwed the hole video. In that situation what would you recommend to do? Thanks for your video, they are very Usefull, gretings from Argentina!!

Hi! Does anyone understand why a video with CTR 100% and view duration 149% stays at 1 impression? Not copyright, AI, sex nor violence, just my hands drawing. Not the first time. I don’t understand.

In your first small channel analysis, you missed a question that should’ve been asked. If it had such a high click through rate, why was it not being pushed out.?

I'm really struggling to apply your theory to my videos - granted I've had a long break, but my first video since I returned (a subject I could see did well in the past) did great, second and third videos, also on subjects I can see did well in the past, flopped.. Struggling to see a pattern 👀

I noticed originally my let’s play videos and my review videos were doing poorly so I started tracking the statistics on them and I noticed my watch time views rate and retention span on a lot of my newer videos is doing 10 times better than older videos and I still can’t figure out how I’m gonna do better
@IbrahimSarker
@IbrahimSarker 10 ай бұрын
Did you upload all the videos at the same time on this example channel? If not, then how can you compare older videos with new ones for the example with clickthrough rate and retention? Normally, with time, the clickthrough rate decreases. So comparing your first video with another one doesn't make any sense, right?

I don't think you understand what people mean by quality gives a higher chance on views .. So I will give 1 simple example .. If someone uploads a low quality video with a resolution of 8k it will automatically get more views then a video that took hours to edit and only has 4k resolution. That's just how the algorithm works .. videos with lower mbs get recommended way less then videos with high mbs I don't know why youtube does this but it makes editing and taking hours of your time kinda irrelevant
how to get 1k subs & 4k watch hours (in 21 days)
