Thank you for doing this! I have some old xbox 360 play and charge battery packs that are dead i'd love to open up and resurrect. Seems like the method you showed welding and nickel stripping to a new NiMh battery is similar to this. I love the idea of reusing this stuff! Thank you!

I'd still tape it shut for if you need to take it out without damaging it. What a great idea! Had no idea a spot welder was so cheap. I've got three robot vacuums in need of new battery packs 🤔

Many eons ago I bought an Energizer Quad Wireless Wii Remote charger and the packs used AAA Ni-MH batteries so they could fit the copper charging coil. What was really nice is that packs were held together with screws so it was super easy to replace them with higher capacity versions.
@wii19902 жыл бұрын
I actually did this same thing a while back, except instead of nyko it was an energizer branded charger that used some kind of wireless charging rather than metal contacts. The battery packs had two screws, one under the label, and the two NiMh batteries were AAA size. So a little easier to repair than these it would appear.

Another neat alkaline battery alternative available today is the Hixon 1.5v lithium-ion rechargeable AA battery. Outputs full voltage so can be used anywhere you'd put alkaline AA batteries. Downside to these is it's obviously not as convenient as a charging station, but you trade that for versatility and no need for modding anything.

I've seen a similar guide on how to redo the old Game gear battery cases but I think those are like six to eight battery packs in a similar pattern inside the casing. That said I always appreciate your videos and those Nykos were amazing/great when I first got the system way back when
@SoundToxin Жыл бұрын
It would be cool if someone could recreate the circuitry from these battery packs and pair them with a 3D-printed case that is meant to be opened/closed. Your method is good since it reuses existing stuff that would otherwise be e-waste, of course.

it's definitely a neat way to repurpose old nyko charger packs but for me I prefer just using eneloop AA batteries that you can recharge in a cradle. On the plus side you can use those batteries in other devices that conform to a AA standard.
@shanez1215 Жыл бұрын
That is true, but these charging stands double as a nice way to display the controllers. The play and charge kits for 360 are also nice since you can charge them through the controller.

I have a wii mote with some batteries in it that I left alone for awhile. But I put a small slip of paper in between one of the terminals to cut off power and so far no leaks. Though granted it probably is still best to remove them for long term storage if you won't be using them for awhile. :P

Very neat project. Any way to avoid alkaline garbage is a big +. To avoid ripping open an existing battery pack though, I wonder if somebody out there could make a 3D printed replacement with some inexpensive leads inserted. I think this is a bit too niche to be a full product to sell as a replacement battery pack though. Idk, I'm not a business man. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ As always, good work and great explanation of things.

@codyisrude2 жыл бұрын
@@Voultar Not everyone can get ahold of them though so what would be the alternatives?
@Hahnsoulo2 жыл бұрын
@@codyisrude The alternative is to buy standard rechargeable AA batteries and a AA battery charger. These are readily available on Amazon, Wal-mart, etc. I have a charger that charges 12 AA batteries simultaneously, and these same batteries can be used in Wiimotes and 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series controllers, OG Game Boy, Game Gear, as well as literally anything else that uses AA batteries, like TV remotes or whatever. There's really no reason to be using disposable batteries for anything these days. Rechargeable AA and AAA batteries are readily available and the tech is well established.
@codyisrude2 жыл бұрын
@@Hahnsoulo yeah i guess but it would be cool if you could charge the batteries from the wiimote via a power source like a usb cable then you would never have to take the rechargeable AA batteries out of the wiimote until they lose their charge from age
