In this video we are looking at an alternate chord you can use in place of the Diminished 7th Chord. I affectionately call this the Inverted Dominant but don't worry musicians, it is easy to use. You just have to know how to play slash chords when playing your gospel songs.
Tomorrow I will have a video exercise to help you remember these piano chords and get them into your long-term memory.
In addition, I have a powerful training on Dominant Chords on my website. All members have unlimited access to the training and it was help hundreds of musicians master dominant chords. You can become a member here: seanwilsonpiano.com/stop-usin...

Like they teach in Jazz school take a diminish chord and lower any note a half-step and you have a dominant chord. A diminished is actually 7b9 chord without the root. Being a diminished chord is a symmetric chord (all notes are a mi3 apart from each other) a diminish chord can be viewed as four 7b9 chords that makes them really flexible. When you analyze how most people are using diminished is as a dominant of the chord your going to or the tritone sub of that chord. For me I look at a diminish chord and see the notes at the b9, 3, 5, b7 of a dominant or any of four dominant 7b9 chords.

As much as we tend to overuse it i've learned that almost EVERTHING we hear / play tends to originate from this scale/chord!!! It makes learning Jazz / Gospel sooooooooo much easier. The man that made me realise that the diminished is the foundation upon which you build your musical mansion is the great Barry Harris! Check him out: he calls the lowering of each note in a diminished chord (to get 4 dominants) "borrowing" notes (from the diminished chord). Example: C#dim gets you C7, Eb7, Gb7 and A7. Now try these dom7 chords over a CMaj - C#dim (replace this chord with one of the 4 dominant chords) - Dm progression in all sorts of ways...sounds and is theoretically perfectly logical/relatable because the 4 dominants are family of one another as they come from the same diminished. Once you understand what mr. Harris is talking about you'll see, hear and play music in a different, more logical and beautiful way...(By the way: if you take C#dim + the roots of the 4 dominants that come from C#dim you get C, Eb, Gb and A diminished scale)...
@rogerpercival5486
@rogerpercival5486 Жыл бұрын
Your talking fully diminished there needs to be a balance between fully diminished and half diminished which are the same as a minor 6 chord and resolute exactly as strong as a five 7 chord Gbdf same pull with f aflat cd

Gotta comment again, that usage at 9:03 snatched my whole soul...for some of us, we already use these chords adding them in, but these voicings are making the difference!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Great video on a great subject! I think that the most fascinating but confusing distinction between Diminished Chords and Inverted Dominants is actually just the names of the chords: C7 (b9) is basically E dim 7 (without a C) and the core musical effect is the relationship between the Melody and the Bass. Of course I love both Diminished 7th chords and Dominant 7ths with b9 but too many can have a tendency to sound needlessly ambiguous or melancholy while the Inverted Dominants sound Powerful & Definitive!

I think most church keyboard players love to overuse diminished chords cause they be stuck in one box (cause it’s primarily churchy) or it comes from them playing organ. I see you think outside box you showing us we don’t have to stay playing stale all the time with those same old church chords all the time and learn to be more creative with fresh ideas that’s what makes you more relevant.

You play drop 2,3 voicing and you spread out the cords overkill of diminished chords do not apply to you. I don’t think diminished chords are used enough I have to a half diminished chord is a nothing more than a hidden minor six and it resolves exactly precisely the same as a dominant seven and it has an amazing sound. The problem is a lot of children out there. Want to be instant piano players, and all they do is make every single chord, a diminished chord and they don’t know how to do it with any melodic structure that’s not you I enjoy your music I enjoy your videos and I like picking on you to just for the fun of it. Lol.

Your so funny your so used to using diminished everything you can’t figure out how to break the mold well here is a secret for you a minor 6 chord is the same as a half diminished chord and you don’t have to stress figuring out how to go from an A major to an e7 it’s a fifth silly goose so just play the A major and switch it to an a minor 6 it has the exact pull that a B 7 has to resolve to the one chore ie Eg#b you don’t have to abandon half diminished chords my friend just emphasize the fact that not every chord has to a diminished chord lol
