I put 18% of my gross household income in retirement each year spread out over a Trad 401k, Roth IRA, and a HSA. If you add to that my employer match then I’m saving 23% in total. In addition to this I save 9% of my gross income in savings in a high yield savings account to be used for emergency expenses/ sinking fund.

I think 15-20 percent is just a guideline, but if you can afford to save more. That is even better, I've seen and heard a lot of people at age 65 years old didn't have anything beside social security check. My mom is an example and that scares me. Nowadays my focus is save and invest as much as I can afford to. I am not greedy, if I can get to 1 - 1.5 million dollars on my 401k by the time I retire. I think I will be ok, I can live with 40k - 60k a year. I've been live around 30k-40k all my life.

@@JarradMorrow "Falling in Love and out of love" is the wrong paradigm. Love - like investing is a choice you make every day because love is above all *action* (what you do) - not a feeling. The feeling of "love", like gains and losses in the market ebb and flow. As an investor you don't abandon the market on a bad day, or a bad month, or even a bad year because if you do, you usually forfeit the gains that come from staying invested for the long haul. A relationship - and particularly a marriage - is a most valuable investment. I've learned some good financial wisdom from you. Hopefully I've been able to give you some insight. My insight is based on 35.5 years of joyful marriage. 35.5 out of 36 is a winning investment for me - in fact while our financial investments have done well, my marriage is my best investment. My final observation is that most marriages fail due to "I" problems. When you make a relationship more about growing your partner than yourself, it has a wonderful way of paying huge dividends. And yes, it helps tremendously when your partner has the same approach: a 50-50 relationship is doomed to failure; a 100% - 100% relationship is much less likely to fail. All the best, man.

Whatever you save don’t do what I did. 30 out of the 37yrs I worked all my 401k was in the fixed 4% return fund. I understand compound interest but I didn’t understand how much of a difference 4vs 6,7, or 8% would make. As a result I literally missed out on millions, yes millions. In the last 7 yrs before retirement I finally got into the market aggressively and it took off. But my ending value was down by nearly 2 million over what it could have been. I was a high earner saving max into 401k and Roth and still saving into brokerage account. About 75k a year. So my ending value is mostly my own cash.

Because everyone's individual ability to invest a specific amount varies, I always advise most who are just starting to start at whatever percentage they feel comfortable. After all it is more important to start investing than not to invest at all. Once they are in the investment arena, I then ask them to commit to increasing the percentage to least half their newly found increases or bonuses as they arrive. Doing it in this manor I personally found it to be less financially shocking to your daily finances. Applying an increase that was never previously there in the first place doesn't throw your numbers off and allows you to get closer to this 15% or more goal. Its like adding some sugar to much needed medicine.

Here's how I look at it: how much do you need to survive right now every month? Save and invest that amount if you can. You cannot rely on social security. If you get it, great. You also want to build your own pension, even if you have one already. That's why going by your actual cost of living today and using that amount is not only going to give you a strong return, it also gives you more power in retirement and even the possibility of retiring sooner.

So if the salary is a higher number, the savings is a higher number also as long as you use the same savings percentage. I like to set it at 3% same as my inflation expectation based on long term historical data. But if inflation is the same as your wage increase it's all irrelevant 😂

I was raised with the aphorism, "only put money into the stock market that you can afford to lose" and was taught to save in savings accounts and certificates of deposit before I was a teen (along with how to calculate interest earnings and compounding). My dad subscribed to the Wall Street Journal and sometimes we'd look at the company quotes, but my impression was that investing was only for rich people with money to lose. One landlady when I was in college lost a lot of money when the stock market went down, so to console herself she went out and bought a new Cadillac. That's who and what I thought investing was about, until after I had started my first post-college job. A year after college I became eligible for the company 401k and "discovered" investing. It was years after that my father retired and I found out he had some stock investments. At one job I used to regularly eat lunch with a group that discussed investing. One friend with an upbringing similar to mine started to attend and reported his parents had recently retired and had all their liquid assets in certificates of deposit. He says now, that that time with that group changed the entire trajectory of his life.

What do you think about dividend ETFs such as VIG, or does VTI provide sufficient dividends?
@TonyCox1351
@TonyCox1351 2 ай бұрын
VTI does not provide sufficient dividends to live off in retirement, unless you have a monster portfolio. If you’re trying to live off dividends you need more. But if you’re still in the accumulation phase, VTI is great (that’s the core of my portfolio)

15% works if you do it for 40 years with 8% returns (5% real). If you start later add 1% every year you start later. Edit: you can also turn it around if you want to retire earlier than regular retirement age; if you want to retire in 20 years, start saving 35% now if you're starting from zero.

Lol thats the truth. Inflation from the last 41 years was 215.4% per USA fed. Extrapolate that out to the next 41 years, 2065, that $2000/month would have the same spending power as $634/month today. You'd be so far below the poverty line.

The average cost of living per person is roughly 3000. That’s 36,000 per person annually. If every person makes 45,000 a year that’s 90,000-72,000 which is 18,000 extra per year. If you don’t have insurance, which 1 in 10 people don’t, and you have a medical emergency that requires hospitalization that stay will cost 2800 per day. The average stay is 4.6 days meaning that’s 13,000 dollars. God forbid you get cancer without insurance because that’ll be hundreds of thousands. Just because you have privilege doesn’t mean everyone does. Prick.
@tamarraj
@tamarraj 2 ай бұрын
That’s absurd. That statement proves you have zero clue that the cost of living in various places in the country (the world, actually) are vastly different. Someone who’s been living on a 6-figure salary isn’t just going to start living in a $40k overnight. If you can live on $45k that’s great, but not everyone has the same lifestyle, family size, retirement expenses. Maybe you like to stay home while someone else wants to travel the world.
@amazinglats6020
@amazinglats6020 2 ай бұрын
@@tamarraj right now I live on 10k a year, and that’s not with my family’s help or anything like that. Yes if you want to travel you will need to spend a lot more money but I’m stating if you can’t live on 45k you suck, never said it was going to be a life of luxury. Even in higher costs of living areas I stand by that statement. The main expense that is more expensive in higher cost of living areas is your house expense which you should have paid off by the time you hit retirement. If you have kids they should also be moved out by then so that isn’t an expense you have to worry about. Of course there will be exceptions and people may need more money than that, but I believe that to be the minority.
