At about 14:30 you were talking about body postion to the work piece. When i was younger and a competitive clay target shooter the same principal applied. When setting up for a shot you find the comfortable middle ground position and then "wind up" to the start position. Call for the targets and then you could swing through completely without running out of the ability to move. I hope thst makes sense. Another words you have to position yourselve where you have a full rsnge of motion tocomplete the task.

Ah. That makes sense. And I bet if you have to move a foot, the odds of hitting the clay were very low. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

Wow! Thanks for another CLEAR, CONCISE, and TECHNIQUE PACKED DEMONSTRATION on “how to” use your lathe! While I have heard the body shifting talked about before, your video really clarified this procedure!

I've really enjoyed this video and the instructions that you insert into it. I 'have now cancer and the chemo treatments sometimes make me a little wobble ( not much, just a little to effect the finale cuts ), Watching this video has made me realize that I'm not fallowing the proper woodturnings dance. I plan to get back in the habit of using my body to steady the cuts. Thanks very for all your instructions.

Sounds excellent Randy! Glad to help. And here's to you recovering quickly!!! All the best to you and Happy Turning!

super like! thank you so much! This clears up much of my frustration as I have anchored the tool against tool rest and my body but still cut with my hands and arms if that makes sense but often find myself off balance and reaching to far to complete cut.

Love that lattice so much , I spent the day trying without and offset jigs. Finally got one ! Question: on the second side when the piece gets thinner, is it better to cut the grooves from the outside working in to put less stress on the piece? Thanks
@ofrank65512 ай бұрын
I move my head stock to the end of the lathe so that I can make my cuts using my body movement (as I learned in some of your earlier videos). I adopted this technique from starting turning on a Shopsmith Mark V. This way I don’t have to reach over the lathe to make the cut. I love the control I get from having the tool handle against my body. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Another consideration is the height of the spindle. In this video, it's near to elbow height, allowing the operator to brace the too against his bodyl without hunching up his shoulders or stooping over.

I write from Italy,great video,do you have some advise for left handed turners like me? Thank you
@TurnAWoodBowl2 ай бұрын
Thank you, Remo! Yes, you can try to switch dominate hands, or you can reverse your lathe and work from the opposite side. However, if you reverse your position, you MUST use headstock attachments (chuck, faceplates, etc.) that have set screws because they will un-thread if you get a catch. I hope that helps. Happy Turning!

I cannot revers my lathe,Is not possibile to block the Chuck,so i Will try to learn with right hand in some situation,thank you for what you do for us

Great video. Movement of the arms and hands which are held steady and directed by the mid torso. More like Tai Chi than dancing. David Ellsworth might agree. My years of Tai Chi practice has been a great help to my turning. The other great thing has been your instructional videos and online courses. Thanks again Kent, you never disappoint

All this is great, if you can move your body. Due to a spinal abnormality, I have to use a chair, so how do you suggest I do these cuts?
@TurnAWoodBowl2 ай бұрын
Mark, I can imagine, it must be tricky for you. Can you tip or tilt your seat or chair safely left or right? You may need to move just your arms and hands. However you can work in smaller restricted areas of the turning at a time. We lose control and accuracy when we reach too far and don't have good control or support of our tool. Try working one area with the tool close to your body for best control, then reposition yourself to the next area. Let me know if that helps a bit. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
