During a zoom lesson (education edition) my teacher disconnected for 10 seconds and i became the host. I got all the host privileges and when she reconnected she was put in with the students. Of course, because this lesson was preparing for our exams i did the proper thing (i know boring) and just gave her host rights again. However this is a flaw that should NOT happen. I can see this happening in other classes where the result may cause much chaos

zoom is very configurable, it was not setup properly, our shop has used it for a few years without any issues, but you have to actually configure the settings for the security you need/desire. Most of the problems are user error due to misconfiguration because it is so flexible. And of course all of the video/meeting/conferencing platforms have similar security issues if also not configured correctly.

idk why everyone started to use zoom. Every teacher that I have seen in my school has skype in their taskbar but before the lockdown (in NZ) they swore by it.

Several reasons why people using zoom: You don't need to create an account to join a zoom meeting. You do with skype. Zoom is easier than skype for the none tech-savvy teachers and students. With zoom can see more people in the video call than with skype. You can split students up into separate groups for group discussions You can hit the raise your hand icon so the teacher doesn't get interrupted You can also record your screen so students can rewatch it later without installing extra stuff

The reason being is that education institutions have been using Zoom way before Covid19 due to being better at handling video feeds. They mainly uses it for conferences because it could handle a larger volume and has more functionalities for education purposes than Skype or Discord offer like Canvas integration. Therefore, when this pandemic hits, it would just be easier for schools to expand their already existed Zoom deal. Instructors are also familiar with the application beforehand, and IT also already knows what technical errors to be expected from Zoom. Nonetheless, instructors could only access Zoom through specific college domain, adding another layer of security protection not just from Zoom. That's why schools use Zoom.

Moreover, the bigger issues are the massive State abuses of power on our Civil/Human Rights and the mass theft of the middle class through trillion dollar State spending bills that primarily "bailout" big corporations. Just as the 2008 "bailout" exacerbated income inequality by redistributing our money to the top corporations, these upcoming spending bills will only multiply that problem. The State loves a crisis like a pandemic, 9/11, or Pearl Harbor. Since the broadcast media spreads so much fear, the public emotionally and irrationally overreacts and begs the State for security in exchange for your Civil/Human Rights and earnings. The public plays into the State's hand every time. This is just the latest opportunity to further prey on the insecure.
