It’s something I do, just without giving it the thought you did. Using the edge of a largish brush is often the best way to get clean edge highlights, so I think I just extended that to using the edge on complex surfaces of many edges. I appreciate the more thoughtful analysis you did of how do to it most effectively.

Same here, something I started doing back in the 90’s. For a large expanse like the chainmail cape Lyla was painting, I’d have drybrushed the larger areas, and just used the side of the brush where I needed the extra precision.

Flat liner does sort of reminds me of overbrushing, but has a similar method to drybrushing. It's a useful brush stroke. I don't drybrush on smaller miniatures, I mostly do it on vehicles and sone larger models. The cat scene makes the last day for 2024, thank you for the contents throughout this year. I've seen this technique before. It's mentioned in the first Dark Sword mini painting dvd with Jen Haley (pro minipainter) and Anne Forester (reaper master series). Anne Forester calls it "Sidebrushing", which i think is a better name. It's mentioned when discussing edge highlighting and using it to paint hair is mentioned. It being an alternative to drybrushing I'm not sure.

Been doing this for a while. It's really effective when I get the paint consistency right, but humidity's an absolute bitch to adjust for. If it isn't in the narrow Goldilocks zone, it drains off the high points or just gums up the brush and doesn't really come off. When I lived in Southern California, I had to add acrylic medium to make my paints stay wet long enough to work with. In Indiana, I have to use Reaper/Two Thin Coats consistency paint in the winter and Vallejo consistency in the summer. But I still have to put more paint than I'll use in my brush to start with, then reload partway through because it gums up so fast.

Nice video Lyla! lately for details like this, or the raised bits of a grated floor or other texture like that which i need to have strong color contrast but drybrushing would be too unruly i have been going 'off brush' entirely -- small neatly cut bits of dense open cell foam and very thin paints. dabs and streaks both work fantastically and allow me to do things like make the 'stroke' in a perfect 90 degree corner

That seems like a useful technique, but there's something off about this mini, and it's not the colors themselves. I literally spent the video focusing more on that than anything. I want to say its that green is being used to highlight purple and isn't being used in a more complementary or natural looking way. Maybe placement and balance more than anything else. It looks best on the thigh by the mace if that helps. I think you brought out the highlights too much on a lot of the mini and that's throwing it off. Sorry, but something just caught my eye and I needed to figure it out.

I so love it when KZbin painters are like "Stop, I've invented something new" and then procedes to explain a technique that is well-known, and basically the same thing as what they're telling us not to do. 😬 You're just edge-highlighting with the flat side of the brush (which is how most a taught to edge-highlight in the first).
