I don’t like cleaning schedules because you end up cleaning things that aren’t dirty! I just go day by day and if I notice something looks dirty, I clean it. I clean a lot less that way and save myself so much exhaustion.

For anyone considering buying a LabelMaker, what’s been working for me is masking tape and a permanent marker. I use scissors so the masking tape looks neat but otherwise I found this to be a really great system for labeling. 😊 Also, I enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing!

Oh my gosh, this was so helpful to me. I feel like I have the same thoughts and I’ve tried routines and I kept thinking I was failing and why couldn’t I do it to be honest doing it the way that you and I do it. I’m not stressed about it. I very minimal things, and when the laundry bin is full, I put a load in after dinner. I do the dishes from the day, but I kept feeling guilty that I wasn’t having a regular scheduled routine. I think you just gave me the permission to not try to do that and just do it the way that works best with my brain. Thank you.

I bought one of those label makers when I heard you talk about it in an older video. It's changed everything. I had a lot of bins and baskets, but they were so random and I never could remember where to put anything or find anything -- until the label maker! A real brain aid!

Great video! I like cleaning routines, but I always get off track, get frustrated, & give up. I have a list of a few things I like to do daily and a particular task for each day (Monday - Friday) that is the same every week. Deeper cleaning tasks I do whenever I notice them and have the time & energy. The great thing about not having so much stuff is that I notice things that need done. Before I couldn't see these because of all the stuff distracting me.

♥ This is so relatable! Cleaning schedules must be for people with neurotypical brains. Diane in Denmark also discusses a FlyLady idea, the top of the hour method, to get tasks done. You do a task starting at the top of the hour and then rest for the remainder of the hour before moving on to the next thing on your to-do list. If it's a big job, you can set a timer for 10 minutes or whatever is comfortable for you and then resume the task at the top of the next hour. Task Initiation and Time Management are the Executive Functioning skills that I struggle with so this technique works very well for both.

One of my biggest pet peeves of cleaning videos is that they have cleaning products all over the house, in various places, and in each bathroom. I do what you do, keep them in one place. I do some necessary daily and weekly chores, the rest is as needed. I teach my kids the same.

My brain functions pretty similarly to yours. And I do laundry pretty much daily. We have a large family and we all do sports, including mummy and daddy! 😅 daily laundry is almost a must here…. And I find that easier to handle than to wait till hampers are full. I taught the older kids to do their own laundry when they were around 10 or so. Now I am trying to teach the younger kids to just throw things into the washer when they change them out. That way when I wash the sports stuff I would wash their dirty clothes altogether.

I also have a horrible memory and am easily overwhelmed by cleaning schedules. So what I have done is I have a very gentle list of what I need to get done in a week to stay on top of the house (Clean kid’s bathroom, wash kids towels, etc) Then as the week goes on, if I have time I tackle one or two on the list and then check it off. If the week finishes and I forgot to do something or purposely didn’t do something because it wasn’t dirty then the next week I know that will probably be something I need to pay attention to. At the bottom of this list I have a number of big areas listed just by name: back garden, kitchen, etc. if I spend time cleaning it I check it off. Even if it isn’t perfect. Because then I know I at least touched that space once that month. As a busy mom of 4 (almost all teenagers) this has been so helpful!

Some of my friends find cleaning so overwhelming that they avoid it and their houses are very dirty. They seen to think that people with clean houses feel differently about cleaning. I have not been officially diagnosed but, as a special educator, I recognise that I have ADHD and for me, having a clean and tidy home makes life easier. I am distracted and overwhelmed by dirty surfaces and messy environments. When I was younger, I used to spend a whole day cleaning, now I do things your way and my house stays presentable all week.

My “maybe bins” have been one of my biggest moderators of yo-yo housekeeping as I move away from the hoarder-prepper mindset I was raised around. Cash flow is such currently that replacing a mistaken removal is not an option so the “maybe bins” are put into play constantly and are stored out of sight/out of mind for 6-8 months. So far, 100% of what has been put in a maybe bin has not come back out and my closet and cupboards function better.

Is my philosophy. Hating on others isn’t going to get you what they have, keep learning, keep an open mind, and keep pushing yourself to be more than a hater. All the best
