Stop working so hard!

If your kayak is only ever floated off and back onto a trailer, you are missing the best water that kayak fishing has to offer. I review several different "kayak wheels", carts and methods to get your kayak from the vehicle to the water. Thanks Charles. I actually work for the manufacturer of Landing Gear. I didn’t when I filmed this. Landing Gear is my favorite option. The YakAttack Bunkster cart is my second choice.

You make a very good argument against a trailer. I love my new Landing Gear on my P127, but I miss my custom-built ones that I made for my Kaku Wahoo. I was able to get them mounted closer to the balance point, and it was easier to get the legs on and off. I'd love to know if there's any disadvantage to switching sides on the Landing Gear, so that the wheel gets closer to the balance point. Still trying to understand why they designed a tilt-back to the legs, other than maybe making it a tad easier when going over something. Keep the great vids coming, Jeff!

I think that it will be easy to find the right balance point on the Osprey, as the track runs almost the entire length of the boat. What do you feel is the perfect position of the Landing Gear base? I bet it depends on if you put all your tackle weight on there before you move it.

Better off with a cart on a p127 or native kayaks unless you literally move your kayak 10 feet to the water. You will eventually bend the gear track using landing gear and it's probably bent already you just can't see it .

After discovering the beauty of a drag rope, I felt quite silly for doing 2man carries of my sea ghost 130. Get one that can loop around your chest to make it even easier.

I used to made them with a carabiner, 8 feet of rope and a 2 inch wooden dowel. That style drag rope made it easy to either dragging through the woods or lowering the kayak down a steep embankment. The Rogue Fishing Co drag strap is a nicer version of that. It’s more hand friendly and the length can be adjusted. I bet that a Sea Ghost drags super easy!

I agree and respect the entire video your pros and cons is on but as a veteran with a bad shoulder tough to get up high is rough. I absolutely love my 4-8 trailer building as a camping/overland solar set up also a toofer lol. New sub love the channel.

Great video as always Jeff. Beautiful place you have. I would hate to be away from there as well. Very informative on different carts. I personally like the boondocks for the ease and not having to lug it back to the truck also if you hit a low water,rocky spot in the river you can deploy them and not tear up your hill then stow them and carry on fishing

My set ups tend to have a blend of mobility options. I’m still partial to dragging in at “creative access points”, but the blend of different access points, informal and otherwise means that I do need wheels. Landing Gear is the least cantankerous and most convenient.

I use a trailer and have the boonedox wheels for a nucanoe unlimited. I understand your point on the 23 point turn but once you get decent at whipping the trailer around you then use the wheels, it is no different then if you had a pickup. Valid points but for those of us that have a non-pickup truck and the kayak is just too damn heavy to put on the roof, the trailer works.

Jeff, you should check out the maker pipe kayak cart. It allowed me to finally manage my Slayer Max 12.5 and I have completely stopped using landing gear. Last year I bent two sets of landing gear legs and the gear track also bent so I went on a quest to find a cart that would self center on a slayer max hull and found it with a custom maker pipe kayak cart fitted to the hull, now I can position the cart for optimal balance and have portaged it for a mile which was impossible with landing gear.

Great video Jeff! I have the Sidekick wheels mounted on my NuCanoe Unlimited using the NuCanoe adapter plate. As much as I hate using the term…….they really have been a “game changer” for me.

This was great! As a guy who is still using the DIY PVC/pool noodle wheels for pavement crossings I may have to install the bonnedox. Funny thing after I got my shoalie I put drag straps on the rest of my yaks and I feel so stupid for not doing it years ago.

Good video. For me draging would involve at best gravel and most likely malapais (lava rock) extremely sharp and plasic loving. Carting my Hobie with the ezee wheels works for me. It can be a pain removing the cart from the scuppers once at the water but I use a board to pop the cart out as I lift the rear of the kayak. I keep thinking the boondox would be the best but I worry about damaging the boat - I've heard horror stories but that may be more BS than fact - I just do not know.

I ripped through the hull of a Wilderness Systems ATAK 140 with a custom backing plate. It was some total custom “whatever I could fit inside the hull” kind of janky rigging I could pull off. Lasted 5 months. Took it off, repaired that hull and put it on the Take Two a year later. The collaboration the Boonedox has with kayak manufacturers is really helping both companies help kayak anglers with more reliable, riggable and durable systems.

I prefer to loop a strap over the rear drag handle. I have a c tug and it's great, if you have a nice level spot to strap it on. Guess how often that happens.

I have no concerns about the plastic getting scratched, but unfortunately some boats drag better than others...hull shape really matters. Your boat that wore through is a prime example, but heavily-rockered hulls like the Jackson Bite are a disaster for dragging.

I believe that it’s a product collaboration with Boonedox - pretty much the same as Landing Gear. Kayak Manufacturers are getting smarter about how their plastic hulls hold up to this style product. They are designing the hull and attachment points so that there is no rupture with the heavy load - something I experienced with a Wilderness Systems ATAK 140. I was so sad when that happened. The custom backing plate I made ripped up through the hull. It taught me something- that the attachment points for the Boonedox Landing Gear need to be as spread out as possible. I did that well with the Jackson Kayak Take Two. It’s solid! I’ve carted it with a cooler full of catfish up a ramp littered with driftwood. That mounting job was a difficult custom job. But it’s worth it!

@@TheLittleStuff Yeah I put a boonedox on a Crescent that doesn't have a rear hatch. It was extremely frustrating and took a long time but I finally got it. I used a backing plate and had to fish everything through the front hatch. I never want to do that again so next time I want to use the Native Sidekick because it attaches to the gear track. Much easier.

Hey Jeff, thanks for a very informative video, good stuff, appreciate you. I had a question? I had a Bonafide P127 briefly and put the Native Sidekick/bonafide cart on the boat. It worked fine. I like the convenience of having landing gear built into boat and just get to the water and go. I switched kayaks to Hobie Outback which I have now. I watched this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-pZX1qo9mCbqs where the guy says he broke his kayak with boondocks landing gear. I am not questioning the validity of that and I could understand that it might happen. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the how and why that might have happened. I ask this because I was contemplating putting the boonedox landing gear on my Hobie but now I am not so sure. I realize any kayak mods you do at your own risk. I would just appreciate your reflections on risk of hobie cracking with the boonedox. Hope to hear from you. Best regards, Scott

I ruptured the hull on an ATAK 140, took it off, welded it and covered it with SeaDek. It’s water tight, and you wouldn’t know it happened. I’ve had Landing Gear on a Live Watersports L4, Hobie PA 14, Osprey 1436, RVR119, Jackson Take Two, and Solo Skiff. No issues on those.

I trailer because my vehicle is a Jeep. I used to "throw" my BigRig on top of a Yukon Denali XL and the Lovely and Talented Mrs. Sigsbee put a stop to that. My neck surgeon agreed with her. Latest innovation I've seen, which I really like, is the dynamic dolly. Search that in Amazon. I bought a Harbor Freight trailer and morphed it into a multi-purpose tool. I put a deck on it and bolted tie downs to that in case I need to carry something on the flat surface without walls. I also built wood rails to go into the receivers so that I could move things like bags of mulch, hunting gear in plastic containers, etc. Most important is the third option which is a 2"X4" frame that I mounted inverted C rail to and installed 4" schedule 40 PVC pipe on that. I have the cheap version of an On The Water Innovations trailer. The boat slides effortlessly onto the trailer. I can do wet launches with ease.

I bought a pickup truck with an 8 foot bed, mostly because kayak fishing is so central in my life and I hate trailers. But your customized trailer sounds like it solves a lot of problems in a different format than my pickup w rack and Decked Drawers system.
