They had those larger transformers where I used to work, and I was amazed by how warm they got. People always forget how inefficient transformers are, especially the bigger ones.

Good ideas. Unplugging 75KVA step down transformer is like unplugging 2 home refrigerators.

Come to Germany, we have 250% since 2017. We don't have peak rates in overall, but depending on region you pay about $0.67 per kWh, a monthly connection fee up to $23 and if you're a business with high load, you'll have an additional charge on your daily max used kW peak, net building/up keeping fee and federal taxes. When you're using 30-80kW peak during one hour and about 200kWh per day. You have an average of $1,35 per kWh and $300 per month only to get a grid connection.

I thought we had it bad in Ireland, but am changing my mind after reading this ! Tks for posting.

Hallo, We do not have an actual German utility bill so we don't know about all the additional taxes and fees German rate payers are charged for. But according to UK.gov site, which publishes tables with kW rates for EU counties for small, medium, large and extra large consumers. Germany kW rate in 2023 for small consumer was 18.36 pence.

The city electrical engineer needs to know about this waist or maybe the electric company wants to scam everyone…

Did your measurement take power factor into account? This kind of measurement results in VA, not W. Also, your additional transformer looks to be a ~50W job, it'd be long gone before any breaker will trip.

We are demonstrating that stepdown transformers waste electricity without load and are not measuring the actual billed kW's here. The control transformer has a fuse on the primary (most modern ones have a fuse holder already attached to the terminals like at 4:10).

I want to know what kind of business uses less than 300 KwH month? My home uses 3-4 times that amount. How is this guy saving 300 KwH a month if his bill is less than that in the first place?

You probably live in a hot state and run AC a lot. We are located in Northern California, so we don't need AC most of the time and heating is with natural gas. You save by not using an oversized step down transformer. If we would have kept the 75kVA transformer you see in the video turned on 24/7, our consumption would have been twice as much. That is the point this video is trying to make.

@@Equiptek_Labs_Inc I was looking at the utility bills shown in the video and wondering why you had heavy power (with transformers) in a structure that has consumption under 300 Kw in the first place. BTW, I live in the northeast USA and do not heat my home or water with electricity.

@@rupe53 Transformer are installed by landlords contractors based on the service capacity going into the premises. Ours has a capacity of 200A so contractor installs a transformer for this rating. It's not their concern who's gonna be paying for electricity and they will always be happy to install a smaller transformer if a tenant is willing to pay for downsizing. Ask your utility company why your bill is so high. They offer free efficiency checkups for residential customers.
@rupe538 күн бұрын
@@Equiptek_Labs_Inc The transformer you show looks to be for converting 277 / 480 power into 120 / 240 or 208 power, which is all unusual in a situation where you have such a small demand and your bill is under 300 Kw a month. (you showed the bills) It was obviously installed for a prior tenant with greater use and you are stuck with it. Skirting code is not the proper way to do this. BTW, I know where my power goes better than some young guy with a computer graph. We just happen to be in an area where they added a "poor tax" recently so pushing 30 cents a Kw.

The new electric meters are what is using the power as they require power for their WiFi to submit your readings to the electric company.
@chaimguzman76203 ай бұрын
It's not true. Smart meters are powered by utility company and consumers are not charged for the electricity consumed by those meters. Just Google it.
