Updates are the weakness in the system. I waver from time to time to shut off the updates. We need to turn off the updates until they come up with something that is useful, that way they don’t slip something in that cuts off access to things we want.

Block updates by following the steps in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKuTiaaMqZmZh7s. However, please note that when you follow the video and get to the DNS portal, it won't pop up but that's ok, simply follow the rest of the video.

I m not finding the custom launcher link you mentioned. I thought the launchers quit when their update killed ADB
