Manoel Island, a small jewel in the center of the Marsamxett harbour, is now under the threat of one of the worse speculations ever. MIDI Ltd wants to bury under a cement pour all the north west part of the island. A walled area of condominiums for the rich will ruin the island forever. A project that was born in the early nineties and that already produced the disaster of Tignè Point, an area that is now devastated by low quality out-of-scale buildings with no sense of architecture and urbanism. The result is that now the Sliema municipality is not even able to control the pollution of the waters due to sewage... not to mention other aspects. We want Manoel Island to become a protected natural and historic area for the people! Let's kick MIDI and its political patreons off the island!

Any agreement can be legally modified with the consent of both parties. A contract is never carved on stone as Moses tablets of the covenant law... 😉 In this case the entire development was planned thirty years ago. Time has shown the disastrous consequences of this initiative. Public culture and needs have changed and nowadays Malta has clearly different priorities: protect nature and historic places which are an irrepleaceable source of economic growth and social well being. There is really no point to continue on a track leading in the wrong direction. Gzira has many neglected areas that can be used for an intelligent and urbanistic sound development: think of the former "Empire stadium", whose ruins lay just a few hundreds meters from the Island. Is it so difficult to imagine a relocation for the MIDI apartments buildings? Does Mr Borg Manchè, Mayor of Gzira, have enough political wisdom and stamina to start a negotiation with MIDI? Could our glamorous Ministry of Environment, Ms.Miriam Dalli, stop looking the other way? Wake up, lads, speculators are stealing our chair from under our ass! @@EnglishmaninMalta

Nice one Steve, it's funny but I still remember that fort when it was still under the British in good condition and then after when it was abandoned and rundown and now it's come a full circle and is nice again. When I was very young my father too me there to see a parade but I don't remember it having a paved ground, I thing it was small gravel ( Maltese sandstone ground small) cheers 👍👍👍👍🙂🙂

Great video Steve. We always wondered about the island as it’s not been mentioned when we’ve visited. Only heard about it from a couple that stayed at same hotel. We wondered what it was when we looked over from Grand Excelsior. I hear there is a galleon that does a buffet dinner while it sails there?

The Island is beautiful to walk around but the fort is not always open The gallion is called The Black Pearl Resturent is further a long in Ta' Xbiex

Another great video Steve! I've never been to Fort Manoel. You mentioned that it was an open day. Is the fort open at other times or just on special days? I'm back over in Malta just before Christmas and I would love to visit Fort Manoel!
