O2 Oxygen Sensor Replace on 2001 Town and Country

We had the check engine "dummy" light on for a few weeks and went through a few tanks of gas (which often makes it go away but it didn't this time), so I decided to put the CAN ODBII code reader on the van and find out what the problem was. The trouble code that came up was P0135, which indicated a bad heater on the Oxygen Sensor (o2 sensor). This was the upstream sensor that is right at the exhaust manifold. In this video, I show the amount of trouble it is to access and replace this sensor on this minivan and the tools I used in order to do it. I apologize for the wind noise, but I haven't figured out how to control the weather.... well at least not yet!! ;)

I recommend taking off the wiper assembly as it is not difficult to remove and gives great access to the back of the engine. Make sure that you mark the position of the wiper arms before you remove them otherwise you will probably have difficulty getting them back in the right place and when they crash together it is nasty.

Tip dejour; Try removing the air intake and plenum when you do upstream 02 sensor or spark plugs on these vans.

it makes it way easier if you remove the windshield wiper assembly and cowl. its about 10 bolts after removing wiper blades. gives large access area to rear of engine. ive done this many times. takes an additional 10 minutes.

Thank you very much for the video but instead of taping the battery post, just pull the battery or put cardboard over it. It looks like the battery posts and connectors needed cleaned and protectant put on them. Thank you for putting Never Seize on the threads!! 🥰❤️

Its been a while since ur post. I was just wondering if u kept track of the part number for the sensor. I ask as i have biught 9 aensors and none for aome reason fit the connector like the factory one does.

The little plastic retainers, that you asked what they are called, are "Push Pins" or "Plastic Push Rivets"...

Since battery ground removed, will that reset diagnostic trouble codes & turn off malfunction indicator lamp irregardless of whether problem is solved? Most excellent job of documenting repair & fantastic videographer! Much obliged for posting.

Thank you for the comment! I don't believe just disconnecting the battery will clear codes, but you can usually do that with a ODB scanner.

Thanks! Yes, this is a gasoline and 3.8L in size. I don't believe the T&C was made with a diesel engine.

So, if you have an auto repair shop replace this sensor, how do they do it? Do they drop the motor..? Or have a special tool? Or come from the bottom on the lift...? This is a really difficult job for the aged or physically challenged, thanks all the same!!! God Bless! †

I'm sure they do it just like I did, but probably have an appropriately long socket extension rather than resorting to put multiples together held secure with duct tape. No lift or anything. I'm sure anyone relatively handy can do it in a few minutes, and half the battle is locating it.

Well shucks, I don't have the Chrysler minivan anymore to double check, but I think that oxygen sensor socket was a standard size (and had the slot in it especially made for that sensor) so I am pretty sure if you just go in and get one of the sockets at your regular auto parts place, it will be the right one!

An o2 sensor is definitely cheaper, but chances are your cat has expired (no 9 lives there!) if your van has more than 100k on it. Good luck!

No more of a problem it is to remove the grill and motors you would have had been done in less time, good idea on duct tape to show others that don't know this

NEXT TIME CUT THE CABLE FROM THE OLD SENSOR BEFORE YOU TAKE AT OUT SO IT COULD BE EASY TO TAKE IT OUT....
