Stopping A Windshield Crack From Spreading

I can confirm that this is the preferred method for steel as well. As an IronWorker we had to inspect bridges for cracked steel, and when found the engineers instructed us to cut a hole at both ends to stop the crack from spreading.

I sorta do the same thing with my drum cymbals, but I drill a hole all the way through. Works great

This 100% worked for me. The key is to go deep enough to just get through the top layer of glass. I then quickly put a few drops of clear epoxy in and that's it. Regular drill bit would not work, I had to use a carbide glass/ceramic bit.

in more details, the hole increases the radius that exixts at the end of the crack, which in turn reduce the stress concentration which reduces the stress below what the glass can whitstands.

Good Lord folks... to be successful drilling a "stop" use a diamond bit... and drill in FRONT of the crack (1/8 inch ahead of it's direction) Drill ONLY partially through the first layer of glass... and gently tap the hole to bring the existing crack to your hole... where it stops... in the tiny "star crack" that you made just AHEAD of your problem crack.

Need to use a Dremel and a tile bit which can cut with extremely high speed at very little pressure.

dang every time I try and lightly drill the crack spreads ,,it was like 6 inches its twice that now with 4 drill points,,very frustrating ,,the second I start to drill no matter how careulit spreads and spiders off in different direction

Has to be a "GLASS" bit... and diamond is better than carbide. BUT VERY IMPORTANT... DRILL ahead of the crack... 1/8 -to 3/32ish... directly in front of the crack... just in front of the crack... front being the direction heading of the the crack. Drill ONLY 1/2 way through the FIRST layer of glass then lightly... very lightly tap the drill hole which will create a tiny star crack that will "bring" your crack to connect and stop at your small...OUTER hole.

You have to use a special glass or tile bite that looks like an arrowhead. You also have to keep the glass and the bit cool by spraying coolant on it during the process. Only use light pressure, you don't wanna go too fast or too deep.

Yes. You don’t want to drill all the way through the windshield. On my truck, we did this quite a while ago, and the crack hasn’t gotten any bigger, and it doesn’t leak in the rain.
