Shooting a motionless target at ~40 yards down at the range with a handgun is pretty hard already, imagine doing that when someone’s openly shooting everyone with an AR, moving all over, while you fear for your life and everybody else’s, having to manage all that dose of stress and adrenaline combined. He then called the people out of the bathroom because he was directly in front of the bathroom and only 40 ft away. Those are static, my preferred guns are my S&W 41 with a micro red dot, my S&W 17 with stock sights or my Browning Buckmark Ultra-Fast custom race gun, with a SeeMore red dot. The thing they all have common is that they are .22’s.

We're all pretty much in awe of Eli's success in this shooting, the improbability of hitting a live target under the described conditions pretty much stuns the mind. It seems he demonstrated incredible poise with what I'm assuming is a somewhat deep training regimen leading to his accuracy and ability to think clearly under massive stress. I was once involved in a fatal shooting at a mere 8 feet and can attest even then an accurate shot is not guaranteed.

The less than 3 week constitutional carry law, and a brave young 22yr old man saved countless lives that day. I read he was taught by his grandfather. It shows how important it is to have a father figure in the home or near to teach these young guys. He and his grandfather should be proud. The practicing and shooting and having his pistol sorted out paid off. He stopped a killer with an AR 15 and took the false narrative away from the "moms against guns" who were plastering media saying that "400 cops couldn't take down a kid with an AR" (what is a citizen with a pistol gonna do)? I imagine He wishes to be left alone. I haven't seen him do 1 media interview on air. I did read 1 statement he gave to the media tho. To take a life is a huge emotional thing regardless. Pray for this young man going forward. I'm sure he has some new enemies now unfortunately.

The most important aspect of the entire shooting was that the "gun free" policy the owner of the mall has was ignored by a good guy. Remember, you can legally carry inside of a business, even if they have a posted "no firearms" sign. But you must leave if they ask you to leave. Shouldn't be a problem unless you needlessly brandish your weapon.

Another SC resident here... I'm just here to second the fact that anyone reading this comment needs to check their local laws. In many states the sign is legally binding and ignoring it is a crime. My pistol range is only 35 yards long, as it’s on a little “flat”. However, I train on 8”, and 10” plates. Getting consistent hits takes lots of practice. It isn’t easy! This young man did an exceptional job at taking down the shooter, considering the circumstances. Practice on small targets. It makes a man size target much easier, as this guy demonstrated. I also have a 10” gong exactly 50 yards from my porch. I can comfortably hit it over 60% of the time, with my pistols. A man size target would easily be near 100%. Aim small, my friends.

It was 40 feet. The maximum effect of range of pistols are 35-45 feet, not yards. The scope on your pistol is designed to shoot at 50 ft not 50 yd. If the kid had tried to shoot the shooter from 50 yards he would have shot the ground in front of him. He was posted up outside the bathroom behind the pillar that is 40 ft in front of the bathroom not 40 yards... But of course the entire world jumps on that bandwagon and now he is a superstar 😆

The iron sights sit above the barrel by like an inch and a half.. the trajectory of your bullet comes out of the barrel is not aligned with the line of sight of your iron sights until it is at 50 ft. He is an awesome kid! Everyone needs to understand that part of his well conducted strategy at that distance was to prop himself against a mall pole prior to returning fire. His FIRST round made bank, and 8 out of 10 rounds connected with the demon. Elisjsha returned fire and neutralized the threat in less than 15 seconds. There are only 2 ways being shot stops you quickly, blood loss and physical damage you either hit the exact right spot (head, or spine) to drop them or put enough holes in them that they loose blood and pass out. That's why most cops will fire their entire magazine at point blank range.

25 yards used to be the standard for handgun training. At some point (yeah, I'm old) I began to see people moving to 7 yards and thought that was nonsense. The whole point of training is to increase your skill, not lower the training bar to beginner level skills. There's nothing wrong with practicing advanced skills like double taps and speed drills at 7 or 10 yards (I encourage everyone to do that), but every time you shoot you should also practice slow and rapid fire at 25 yards. If you can group well at 25 yards, you can easily make 50 yard shots. Your groups will be larger at 50 yards, but if proficient at 25 you'll still put entire mags into a torso sized target at 50. Even at 100 yards a hot defense round (or just NATO pressure ball rounds) will only drop about six inches. When you shoot a steel torso target at 100 yards and hear that ring from a hit, your confidence level (in yourself and your chosen carry piece) rises. When you can consistently ring that steel at 100 yards you are a very good shooter. Push the envelope. Train at all reasonable distances, not just seven yards.

I am old school, and old as well. My dept qualification for duty started at 50 yards then moved closer for the rest of the drills. At almost 7 decades I have been shooting for over 50 years. Today, when I go to the indoor range I move the targets as far down range as the building allows which is 75 feet. It never ceases to amaze me watching other folks on the other lanes shooting at 15 feet or closer and thinking they are getting good practice burning ammo as fast as they can. Not really impressive to me. If you can hit at 25 to 50 yards, then shooting at 15 yards is a snap.

FBI statistics. 90% gun fights are 5-7 yards and happen in 3-5 seconds. If you can hit a 1inch square at 5 yards, you will have zero problems hitting a Silhouette at 40 yards. I also thought the same but reversed when people at the range put the targets clear in the back, I think what are they training for a gun fight with the neighbors clear a cross the street.

I am old school as well, Retired Border Patrol. When I first joined the BP the quarterly pistol qualification of 72 rounds included 8 from the fifty yard line. For some reason, they went to a max 25 yard qualification around 1996. I have always felt that was a mistake. I found that practice from the fifty (and 100) made everything else seem easy as it was so close. For info, I found that a 4-6 inch holdover at 100 provided me with conxsistent X-ring hits with both 357 and 9mm. You have to know your sights and control the trigger.

I'm a legal, licensed CCW carrier in CA. If this same situation played out here, I would have pulled my girlfriend behind me, found solid cover and concealment first. If I could safely identify the threat and could see a clear path of cover or concealment, absolutely would have bounded on target but NO WAY IN HELL, I would have posted up at 40 yards to take the shots. It never would have crossed my mind at 40 yards. I would have closed to 40 FEET before taking those shots and likely would have been shot by the shooter, too. Even though it was a stationary target that was not an easy thing to do, I can only imagine what it's like to hit 8 out 10 hits on a moving target at 40 yards. 40 yards is out of the question for me. I used to practice alot at 25 yards and never did as well as I would have liked to. Definitely a challenge for sure. I don't want to take away anything from this young man's skill but, there may have been some divine intervention involved because he was willing to risk it all for others i.e., David vs Goliath. Just a thought.

There is a pillar he was standing by 40 ft in front of the bathroom where he pushed his girlfriend behind the pillar to protect her. He was sitting at the table right next to the pillar... Why he would run away and go inside the cell phone store to shoot a guy in the bathroom?? 😆... People have no idea what they are talking about lol, they just picked this one up and ran with it lol.. he was close enough to the bathrooms to yell people out because he was hiding behind the pillar directly in front of the bathrooms which is about 40 ft

question is did Eli have an actual sight on his gun or was it stock iron sight. If he took down that assailant at 40-ish yards with an iron sight then that just got more impressive

I keep seeing everyone in the 2A community saying they want to get this young man gear or interview him. But haven't heard anyone mention helping him with the mental trauma of taking a life even though he took out a bad guy. Taking a life is never easy.

In my experience with combat related PTSD is that what is trauma to one is not trauma to all. I have met men that had issues with having killed the enemy, and actually know more that didn’t have any issues with killing the enemy. The issue I found more men were dealing with was losing their fellow soldiers, or seeing innocent children injured or killed. Mindset is developed in training, and we don’t rise to the occasion we revert to our training. I think Eli probably has some training, and has practiced what he’d do if he were ever in this exact situation.

Ghee , IDK. Maybe I'm older and colder. But I have seriously injured a thief before who was stealing my property. Keep in mind that I had been hit in burglaries , 15 or 20 times , with thefts over ten thousand dollars. I didn't feel one bit bad about the thief losing his leg.

Wow. Great shot. I don't think the general public can relate to how hard it is to place 8 of 10 at 40 yards. You, are an exception and have the benefit of environment. I'd like to know what 9mm the hero was using. Ya know, it brings a tear to me eye hearing the heroics of this young man and that his girl went to the aid of others... What a great story. Excellent shooting, on this young man's part. I'm a retired law enforcement firearms instructor and ran qualification shoots for lots of departments, over the years. Our qualifications were from 25 yards and in and many officers struggled with grouping well at 25 yards. I have some specialty handguns that I shoot at fairly long distances. But they're definitely not carry guns. I do a lot of back country exploring in my 4X4 and figure if I run into serious trouble (I don't look for it) then my carry gun is just to allow me to fight my way back to the vehicle to get my rifle. Good video and good shooting. I enjoyed watching it. Thanks

I agree, the gun owner did what he could under the stress filled, rapid event. I recall other mall shootings, spree incidents where ccw users, gun owners on scene later said the sounds were like fire crackers or balloons 🎈. They were also unable to make clear shots. This young guy saved many lives.
