This channel is the KING of cliffhanger endings to the point of hilarity. I always get a good laugh at the end of each episode because of it. Though highly dramatized, this is probably one of the best channels to exist on KZbin. Ever. There is so much click bait and rage-inducing "engagement" fodder, and now AI regurgitation. It's so refreshing to see something with the production quality and writing sensibility of a TV show that still retains vast educational value. As a kid, I used to dream of having vivariums like this all the time, and watching this channel has reignited that in me. I am in the early planning stages of my own little project, but will be going in a very opposite direction to Pantdora and Orchadia. I am fascinated to see how -small- of a vivarium I can create with a sustainable ecosystem. Keep churning these out, I look forward to each episode!

I'm not so sure letting the fire ants thrive up in Orcadia is such a good idea. Right now they're (hopefully and most likely) outnumbered, and you can help the ants in Plantora by giving them excess protein. But if the fire ants get to thrive and grow, eventually they're going to outgrow Orcadia and then the Seven Nation Army can't hold them back. And once the fire ants are victorious they're going to open a rift through time and space and write a kick ass song about their victory.
@milleniumonion7223Ай бұрын
If you are talking about the red ants, the red ants aren't fire ants. Still an invasive species tho
@cosmicdust2668Ай бұрын
I think it's a difficult choice, especially since they aren't fire ants despite being red and there isn't a lot of information known about them, so judging how aggressive they are is difficult. Part of why he kept them is probably because so little is known about that species of ant, and he has the vivariums to learn about nature. Especially since some of his friends are specifically ant researchers, this is a really big opportunity to study a poorly understood species, even if it's also dangerous to the rest of the ecosystem. It makes it way harder to judge whether they really need to be taken out or if it's worth letting them stay.
@Angus_m1xАй бұрын
they're not fire ants they are a tetramorium species and they are actually native to places near the Phillipines so I think they're presence wouldn't be anywhere large as a threat to the ecosystem as fire ants would be

I have to admit that I was never very keen on how Orchadia originally looked. To me, it appeared to be simply a thinner, less lush Pantdora. Now, with all the added leaves and a real canopy, it does look like a whole new and different ecosystem from below. Great job!
@laureniveyАй бұрын
One thing I've always enjoyed is how show us real examples of terrain you're mimicking. Specifically I was fascinated at 16:00 where you showed us what "canopy soil layers" actually look like to explain why you were putting in a little soil spot in Orcadia. Very cool! Also I don't know what your temperature set up is like but it's possible with all the organic matter in Pantdora, there's warm air rising up into Orcadia and making it more comfortable for the frogs. I think a fun addition could be to add humidity and temperature gauges to both Pantdora and Orchadia. I also think it would be really fun to maybe have a guest herpetologist kind of decipher your observations and explain things like why the frogs feel more comfortable in Orchadia, why the skinks don't climb up to Orchadia, maybe some fun facts on the specific species of animals.
@kendrac886Ай бұрын

It’s likely intentional to an extent. It’s a great way to introduce new biodiversity of local species without having to do anything special like go out of his way to breed a colony. Of course it has its risks, but at the end of the day, he’s been doing this for *years.* He knows how to handle it if there’s some sort of super dangerous situation or pending ecological collapse. Plus, it’s all content anyways. If he was really that worried, he’d probably grow all his plants himself. But, the reality is, he *wants* the native biodiversity from plants he yoinks from outdoors. It’s really hard to create that sort of micro-ecosystem from scratch.

Question : what do you plan to do when one population of ants inevitably takes over the whole vavarium
@rafexrafexowski4754Ай бұрын
It isn't inevitable. Different ant species live in different environments and eat different food, making competition minimal. Unless you are talking about an invasive takeover of course, which is always possible, especially now that AC accidentally added black crazy ants again, but the ecosystem is now so well established that I don't think even invasive species would massively impact it. The ghost ants are a notoriously dangerous invasive species, but they did not cause a single extinction despite still probably living in Pantdora. The Dark Horde only got so dominant because it had no competition. That's also how the Gnomads took over after the Dark Horde was removed and the Terra Raiders were wiped out by mites, despite gnome ants being native.

Maybe the weaver ants moved to the lower area because of a lack of broader leaf plants to make nests?
@bujtormАй бұрын
They did, banyan trees produce a milky sap, even on the leaves, when they are damaged or pierced, so weavers can't/won't use it for nesting.

You should keep a quarantine area for new plants. Might help with preventing unwanted introductions.

I think you need a strong current of airflow on your canopy tops as well as a more powerful burst of water droplets to simulate rain and wind

This is absolutely amazing I can’t believe you’ve been able to keep this incredible ecosystem alive, I’d love to see a new ant colony. Also have you ever kept Polyrachis? Like sugar ants? Not sure if they are native to your area though. 🐜🐜

A small colony of zebra finches or something similar would really add to the canopy feel, as long as there was some sort of predator to keep the numbers from exploding.
@citrusbutter771819 күн бұрын
The canopy lighting is kind of dark though, i think maybe that's why the trees are failing.

Makes more sense if you know Filipino sense of humor and political humor, and I guess social structure. Life is very cheap, death squads are popular with the public, the rich often see the poor as sort of subhuman, and just generally, dehumanizing people with comparison to parasites or insects is normal in politics. My family there are diehard Duterte fans (from Davao, not surprisingly) and would love the MOGA jokes :)
