A brief introduction to Fluid Thin Film coatings such as ACF-50 and CorrosionX and how they work in protecting metal aircraft from corrosion. This is a viable strategy for homebuilders that can be used to protect their investment from harsh environments.

Most builder use a brush and where two pieces of metal are riveted together they paint it on. Best way to go.

I've seen many videos on protecting cars against rust, it's overwhelming. I've also looked at stuff for protecting wire rope, like used on cranes. Then I thought about what people use on their planes, and I see this. This must be pretty good if used for this application. I wonder if anyone has used it on cars.

HI, thank you for posting this video. I would like to know if you can apply ACF-50 over existing surface rust spots or they need to be sanded back or scotch brited before applying. Thank you

Nice video, but the second item under, "How do these fluids work" is incorrect. They do NOT form a sacrificial dielectric barrier that stops electrons from getting thru. If they did, then you couldn't use them on electrical contacts, as recommended by the manufacturers. The fact is, that when surfaces are pressed together the microscopic asperities penetrate the film to make electrical contact. What the film does do, though, is seal the areas against contact with remaining electrolyte liquid, thereby limiting opportunities for galvanic corrosion and against air, so that non-galvanic, atmospheric driven corrosion (including fretting corrosion, a big problem for electrical contacts) is prevented.

Is this product safe on automotive paint? I have a newer Jeep Wrangler JL which the doors are aluminum and the hinges are steel. The underside of the steel hinges are not painted and this is in contact with the aluminum door! from the factory of course. There's a big problem with Jeep owners where the paint is peeling, I just want to coat underneath the bare hinges for added protection.

Zinc Chromate .... battle proven in WWII and you don't have to take your airplane apart every couple of years like his stuff does!! :=)) ....sounds like a Kirby vacuum cleaner salesman..."ours sucks harder and you only have to replace it every time you use it!"

Aceengineer, i used to twist a wrench on dc-6's for the self described "cheapest G** D*** B******" in Miami. The planes went to points south. He was very insistent that donar ac as well as the active fleet were treated with acf50 on an annual basis. The dm used enough of the product that the planes dripped for days.

Does this affect glues used in fabric covering? I'm restoring an old ultralight and I have the old fabric off now. I want to treat the metal, inside and out, before I cover it. Will the glue stick to the aluminum after treating it?

The pure aluminum (alclad) provides it protection, but adding extra protection will not hurt at all in those hard to reach places, e.g. rivets and such.

Has anyone tested WD40 on aircraft upon electronic components ? Any technical comparison available between ACF 50 & WD 40?
@gureno19
@gureno19 4 жыл бұрын
WD-40 is a basic retail penetrant and should never ever be used in aircraft applications. ACF50 is a far more advanced and superior product and safe on electronics.

@@gureno19 " WD-40 is a basic retail penetrant and should never ever be used in aircraft applications. " LOL, Haven't a clue what WD-40 is, do you??? FYI, WD-40 was initially formulated as a corrosion protection film for Convair for Atlas missiles. So, it absolutely is aerospace corrosion protection. That's why it exists. Not to say that it's the best product for GA aircraft, or that it's better than ACF. Just that you kinda ought to know what it is before you start spouting off about it.

@@andrewalexander9492 that's great! wait till you hear about the wonderful benefits and uses for asbestos! Truly a wonder material! Just because a product had an original use and application decades ago, doesn't mean that product fits the brief/application in the present day....

No absolutely not. I live at the coast and aluminium corrodes. I’ve seen this when I served in submarines. It is not possible to do this every two years, unless you are going to dismantle and rebuild those closed voids in the aircraft. So I’m about to purchase a kit aircraft but my favourite the Zenith is looking unlikely.
