So much respect for Miyazaki's vision. he went against the grain of mainstream, hand holding, button mashers, full of tutorials, and proved to the gaming industry that there is still a market for difficult games that rely on game play and not 8 hrs of cut scenes to make its mark.

Im right there with you. I still remember getting Demon Souls for the first time and like NO ONE (at the game store or my friends or barely online) knew what the game was. The ONLY reason I even heard of the game (about a month after it launched) was I happened to see a random blog review somewhere praising the game for its difficulty ~ and as a avid old school gamer, hearing "great difficulty" (in that and still casual climate of games / media) was all I needed to get the game. As others have stated... I have never had an experience of going in BLIND to a game like this before or since. No hype, no (yet) cult following, no press, no nothing... it was basically an unknown game and those few that played it in the first few months of release were like explorers going into the COMPLETE unknown. And it was amazing. Souls games are probably one of the few things that makes me turn into a complete hipster... "I WAS THERE BEFORE IT WAS COOL!!!" hahaha

Cute.. I actually picked it up cause I was hammering on the kingfield series. And let me tell you, if you thought no one knew what demon souls was...wew. It was hard to get copies of kingsfield. Shit had to be shipped from out of state to my gamestore. The souls series is a total upgrade obviously, but you can still see so much of kingsfield's influence in the souls game. It still stands as its own and is still great fun, even though its primitive, even for ps1.

I've known about the virtues of the company since Otogi for Xbox in 2002, but more in the sense of being a Sega exclusive for a system with quite the eclectic lineup. Needless to say, I picked up both games after hearing of their lineage among From Software games. Being Xbox exclusives that aren't backward compatible also gives the system many reasons to be maintained in collections, along with Dino Crisis 3 and Gun Valkyrie among others. The big black behemoth looks delightfully out of place among my sleeker white version consoles, but it will always have a home.

This is why Miyazaki is my favorite figure of the whole gaming industry. A youtuber of my country (and one of the most sincere persons i know) had the luck of spending a couple of evenings dining/chatting/interviewing him, and he said nothing but excellent things about his personality. He truly is an underdog that managed to raise ONLY due to his talent, and was recognized for his genius later. That's enough to make a movie, seriously... I think that the whole Souls serie (yes, including Demon's and Bloodborne) is by far my favorite serie also because i really respect the story behind it's developement..to fully appreciate it i even went through the effort of playing all the king's field/shadow tower games.. stop...that's what happens when i talk about these games...i start to ramble

Demon's Souls rekindled my love for video games back in 2010, when seemingly everything was either turning into a shallow cover-based brown homogenized shooter, or "cinematic experiences" that existed to waste your time with cutscenes and hand-holdy gameplay. I was there in 2011 and Dark Souls was the game I was most excited for in my life, it took Demon's Souls foundations and opened it up into a pseudo-Metroidvania, it was everything I could ask for and basically felt like a game made for me. I remember another game launched with Dark Souls that week, called RAGE, a brown shooter, and people were hyping it up way more than Dark Souls that week... does anyone even remember RAGE today? Meanwhile Dark Souls is a juggernaut, it changed the entire industry.

You know what I think would be interesting? A souls like game by From Software in a cyberpunk setting. I have a somewhat interesting story: Around the time of Demon's Souls Japanese release the publisher Ghostlight were working on bringing a niche SRPG called "Agarest: Generations of War" over to Europe. At the time I was looking forward to that game and went on the Ghostlight forums, where some members of the team would ask us questions on things. (eg which cover art we preferred, what we wanted for the Limited Edition etc) As the Japanese version of Demon's Souls was making waves several members of the forums, including myself, suggested to the publishers to bring it to Europe. They had already said that Agarest had been a massive pain, with an insane amount of text to translate, and Demon's Souls barely had any text at all, so it would be much easier. One of the Ghostlight staff responded and said that the company had decided it wouldn't be worth the effort because "everyone who wants it will just import it." We kept on and on, many of us saying we wanted to wait for a PAL edition, but they dismissed the idea completely as a waste of time, saying they wouldn't make any money. Cut to today and... Yeah... Ghostlight missed a huge opportunity there.
@GiordanDiodato8 жыл бұрын
I'm sure they're still kicking themselves. It does make wonder who will be the new publisher for Atlus IPs in the PAL region since NISA Europe, Inc. has lost the rights to publish other Atlus games.

FromSoft produced five of these games -- basically Armored Core meets Super Robot Wars -- between 2005 and 2011 for Banpresto (which is part of Bandai), so the company already had an existing relationship with Namco Bandai well before Dark Souls. I think 2 things played really well to make this series possible: 1) King Field Series had a big fan basis. That were starved for more of From Software style of games. Which never really saw another title or re-release on the PS3. PS Store has some of their games available, but they never have released them in the US for some reason. But it was just enough strange/different that people that were tired of AAA games would poke at Demon Souls just to try something different. 2) All of the hand holding going on in 2006-2008 really left a lot of older gamer behind. Sure classic titles had newer versions but there were not that many new games with all of the new technology to scratch that itch that never really truly was filled after arcade style games were being let away for more of a friendly series.

Today it's the day of reviewing big successes that were expected to be failures. Yesterday Leicester's city football club got the Premier League. Almost every one of the squad are rejected football players that never got the confidence to really do what they really wanted. Here we can see something in common: two entities that never knew what they were creating. Both are heartwarming stories about never giving up, it's really inspiring thinking that not everything should remain a dream, and we are now grateful that Miyazakit took the series and made it what it is nowadays. As always, great review, these kind of stuff puts this channel away from standard gaming channels.

As far as pumping out yearly titles, they were popping out Armored Core games dang near every year since they started. This is the longest dry spell for the series since it started, actually. FS even forgot about the 20th anniversary until a few weeks after the fact. It's quite a good series, and actually just as ripe for their weird exploration as their other games, almost every one was a unique experiment of some form or another.

i see! I always wondered why Demons Souls wasn't popular outside of Japan. It was never released. I've been in Japan for 12 years, and bought the game on a whim. I'm not surprised it sold well, as at the time there were no decent games on the shelf for the PS3 at the time and it did have an attractive cover. The Paladin with ethereal mist coming off his armour, and some good shots on the back cover. I'm sure I wasn't the only one drawn in by the box alone. So I picked it up. My spoken Japanese is good, but the game was heavy on kanji so I couldn't get it at first, by some miracle I figured out about summoning and the red phantom invasions, and after I got that mechanism going I was hooked. It was weird seeing the names translated into English once I ordered the Chinese version. For example kezuritoru yari (scraping spear) translated as 'desharpening spear' - so for about a year prior to it I'd called it 'The Desharpener' in my head.

Great in-depth content Derek, few people look into the real world consecuences of our favorite games. I didn't know how much of a "Final Fantasy" Dark Souls pulled for Bandai Namco. I do remember however being really interested in the game in 2009, even considered importing when a lot of forums/youtubers/gamesites were covering the import version...I remember saying to myself "I MUST OWN THIS" and proceded to buy a Ps3 just for this one game. get the upgraded ps4 if you haven't already, the framerate isn't 60 like it should be in bloodborne but its actually a constant 30fps instead of the jittery mess it was on the original ps4. Of course they did patch some of the bugs that made it have horrible frame pacing but it still has bad frame pacing. The pro is unfortunately 30fps locked but unlike the original its ALWAYS going to be 30fps not 27 or 12(when there's too much particles)

So, Hidetaka Miyazaki actually already made the Demon's Souls sequels, as Dark Souls was very much a remake/refinement of the original Demon's Souls, just with a certian amount changed. That's why you can find massive amounts of "Dark Souls/Demon's Souls Similarities" videos. I wonder what From Software will make next.

as far as I understand Miyazaki doesn't want to make a Dark Souls game in near future... but since Bandai Namco holds the rights they probably make a game Dark Souls game...

maybe another developer?

correction, they're making their own Soulslike game called Code Vein. It's being made by the God Eater people.

slight incorect fact there. they actually made FOUR kings field games but we only know of three of them because the game WE know as Kings Field 1 is actually kings field 2 as the True KF1 never made it outside of japan.

You should check out Otogi on the orginal xbox. It's a pretty great game with an even better sequal. It was probably the best IP FromSoftware had before the Soul games.

I was listening to the Giantbomb podcast's around the time of the games release, and I seem to remember Vinny being the only one who actually 'got' the game and enjoyed it. Updating his progression every week or so on the bombcast. With Ryan constantly berating him for continuing to play it.

actually most fromsoftware games yield uniqueness experience in each, they always try new stuff in their games, some of it not polished well, may contains other bad stuff ruins their game, or controller sux all together, but from all their previous experience someone finally came up to take hold of their old mess and start polishing their works.. it was miyazaki...

I'm glad Demon's Souls managed to get it's feet under it and start the series. My only complaint was that many of the bosses were way too easy and gimmicky (kek @ Dragon God) Between Demon's Souls, DS1, DS2, Bloodborne, and DS3 we have other companies taking what they love about the formula and making it their own. Lords of The Fallen, Nioh, and The Surge... From Software thank you so much.

and we're also getting Code Vein, from the developers of God Eater (a solid PSO clone)

I'm probably the only person who can say this, but Lost Kingdoms 2 still might be my favorite From Software game.

I love your videos on From Software, having watched both this one and the one on Shadow Tower, but I keep wondering why you ignore the wonderful Otogi games for the Xbox that From put out. Either I'm missing it or these games haven't caught your interest. I really like your point of view in these videos and would enjoy seeing something on the two Otogi games that released in the early 2000's.

1:10 i don't remember seeing this in any video..is that just gameplay with an e.n.b/light mod? Never seen it..but it is awesome, and i need an excuse to replay Dark Souls 1 for the 40th time...so if someone knows if it exists.... I mean: i know about the "overhaul project" that is currently in developement, but it is nowhere near that quality
