I feel for this gentleman. I had six guitars stolen when my apartment was burglarized about ten years ago. Nothing terribly valuable or special but it still sucked. Don't count on the police. They don't care. The officer who came by to fill out the report could not have been more disinterested. Everyone: keep serial numbers and photos of your gear in a safe place in case you are a victim of this. It might help get your stuff back. Good luck to your friend, Baxter.

I always keep my guitars next to the fire escape so I can grab them in a worst case scenario. They become so special and irreplaceable. I am shedding tears right now imagining not having my guitars. Storage hints: Wardrobe boxes, using old clothes as both camouflage and padding. Nobody wants to steal old stinky clothes. Make the contents of the unit look like worthless junk, especially when loading and unloading the unit. Put in tempting, but worthless, items toward the front of the unit, like a broken TV or old golf clubs from a thrift store.

Ditto here on the use of WARDROBE/GARMENT BOXES to disguise your instruments. I even do this when I move. My new neighbors don't need to see dozens of guitar cases and gear being loaded in to my place, but wardrobe boxes won't get a second notice. (Hopefully we're not letting the cat out of the bag here, and now all the guitar thieves will be on the lookout for wardrobe boxes.) Another hint: buy USED ones off of Craigslist or Facebook, as a bunch of brand new wardrobe boxes possibly will stand out and attract attention. And don't skimp on piling up some funky looking old clothes on top if they're going into storage... ;) Good luck, we gotta protect our hard-earned gear!

Always make sure you have multiple layers of security when paying the high dollar premiums that storage facilities charge. I hate to say it’s just stuff at least you have your health, but when shituations occur in life, it’s so important to try to hold onto something positive to get yourself out of the rut. That is some nice camera footage, and thieves are fucking greedy as all get out. I’m staying optimistic with you that they hunt these fuckers down, and you get your possessions back, damn…my heart goes out to y’all.

People do not understand what losing something like this is like. One way to somewhat protect your stuff is write your name somewhere in the interior of the guitar. And he's right about Casino. I had several basses stolen that I had stored in a unit in Tampa FL. A Rickenbacker 4001, A Peavy Foundation and an Ibanes Roadstar as well as a couple of beater guitars that I had. The instruments I can understand but also stolen was a huge box of books. This box was heavy and had my high school year books and some hard cover sci-fi books. The weird thing was they even took the box. The thieves crawled over the wall from the next unit, you could see the broken drywall at the top.long story short only store in safe controlled access facility's, you'll pay a bit more but chances of theft are much less.

I remember back in 1987 i was playing in this band and we had all our gear together in 2 adjacent warehouse and we had the wall knock down to make it our practice hall. Come one day we went in there to rehearse and almost all out equitment was gone. I will never forget that. All that time; money and music gear we worked hard for all gone. Thanks for sharing your story. I had a 70's Les Paul Standard stolen back when I bought it. I didn't have it a year. I engraved my SSN on the inside of the cavity cover and maybe even the control cavity itself. The serial number is 109872. I can't remember what I had for breakfast but I remember that SN almost 50 years ago.

I feel the pain. I was the subject of a theft from a storage unit which I felt will keep my stuff secure. Items worth four figures were stolen. Lesson learned - never have anything valuable in public storage. Keep it close to you and my philosophy going forward is - if I cannot store it (at home) I am better off not owning it...

My house was broken into and all of my gear was stolen. I left a list including serial numbers with every music store and pawnshop in town. The thieves showed up at two of the local pawnshops and were caught on surveillance and identified with my guitars in their hands and still got away with it. The pawnbrokers turned the guitars down after making copies of their ids. The thieves denied knowledge that they were stolen guitars. Simple as that. That was 10 years ago. I never recovered anything.

There’s been some fairly large collections stolen in the past couple of years. I wish someone (or multiple people) from the guitar community would get together to create a special storage option just for guitar collectors. Have a few locations to start in several major cities. Make it possible to mail guitars back and forth for people who live far - or better yet, offer a service on a schedule with your own fleet of climate controlled trucks for people to send their guitars or request them to get brought back home, to a studio, etc. Make the facility totally secure, climate controlled, cameras in each unit, and tracking devices hidden in each guitar. I am certain that people with sizable collections would immediately take advantage of such an option made by the guitar community, for the guitar community (ok, maybe some other instruments too lol).

My heart goes out to him, sorry to hear about this soul destroying BS Rob. I inherited my fathers collection, quite a big collection of assorted vintage Guitars. The storage company i used proported to be guarded 24/7. I also have my own collection of left handers i keep with them. I went to the unit one day and as i was about to go into the actual unit i was spoken to by some guy who said he was a friend of the security guard. I could see the guy was looking past me to see what i had inside. I got a real bad feeling and took all, everything straight out and it's a good job because there was a spate of break in's that very weekend. It also transpired that the security guard was arrested for robbery. I don't know what i would have done? There is no amount of money that can replace this collection and it holds significant emotional investment to mysel and financial security for my children. These people need their fingers breaking. I am gutted for him.

I feel for this guy. I had a Fender Jaguar, and LP Deluxe stolen. Not a good feeling.

I left an acoustic in a case outside of an indoor, obscure storage unit for 5 minutes to run to my truck…and it was gone when I got back. Luckily for me it was a $100 Rogue that a great gave me after quitting. Maybe I subconsciously didn’t want to deal with it. But, damn, thieves are fast. 🤷‍♂️

When I was in my 20s I knew this guy that managed a storage unit facility and he lived on the property. He would tell shady people about specific units that had valuable items in them and they would come over to break in and take whatever they liked. This inside job theft still happens all the time and that would be an obvious reason why they specifically targeted your unit. Never put really valuable items in storage units, they are not secure!

Be sure to post this to Reddit and as much social media as possible! I'm very sorry for your loss, I hope the items are found (undamaged), and that justice is appropriately served to the individuals involved with the robbery/accomplices.

It's just a matter of time when these guitars will start showing up on internet listings. These guys did not steal these guitars to enjoy them. They want to sell them. The attempt to sell them is the weakest point in the theft. It's good to know the storage unit didn't have even the cheapest motion detectors hooked up to an ADT system.
