I like all the ideas for keeping things tidy and I like the idea of keeping only those items that bring you joy or are extremely useful and getting rid of everything else but As a Christian I prefer to treat my possessions as those I am given and entrusted with by God. I don’t thank inanimate objects for their usefulness I thank God for the blessing of being given something useful. My gratitude is to God for His Provision in my life.

I would point out that Mari is not technically a minimalist. Certainly though her approach to Tidying can be very useful to both minimalists and those who are not. By using Mari Kondo's techniques I have been able to admit that some objects in my home do NOT bring me joy. I have given myself permission to let go of these items and bring in ONLY those items which do bring me joy. Letting go creates a flow of new energy. Mari's approach to Tidying, and reviewing objects within one's environment is not ONLY for minimalists. Plus.. there are many levels of Minimalism. We should never feel guilty about creating a nurturing and pleasing surrounding. For myself... I would rather put my funds toward one special item... than a collection of LESSER things... but ... that's just me.

@@humanityandme I would not consider her store as capitalism winning the day. The items are expensive, presumably well-made, and don't fit an obvious current trend. None of them really sparked that gotta-have-it itch coupled with an affordable price and designed for planned obsolescence or replaceability. They are not the sort of items that keep the economy chugging along at a brisk pace. Wealth disparity may have won, but not capitalism, except to the extent that it causes wealth disparity.

@@paeonia321 I'll rephrase it as consumerism then, I mean I can't unsee it because I have a business degree, marketing is a magical phenomenon from what I'm seeing here whereby one can reframe the perspective on reasons to consume and in goes profit to our pockets. Here's the thing, I'd not have an issue with this if it were anyone else but Kondos entire brand is based on keeping what sparks joy and decluttering, why not keep it as simple as that and perhaps share what she cares for possessing and then it is up to people to decide what they want to from there but now there's an entire business team behind her, they will be producing annual reports on how much profit she accrues on her products... I wouldn't be complaining if she decided to mix consumerism with charity not at a pathetic 10% and under rate for every good sold but higher, I don't mind my pocket being taken advantage of while I'm led to buying the cookies that contribute means to people in need. I'm not trying to be rude on the Internet, I'm just saying aloud what I observe.

Your reading comprehension isn't very good is it? These items are not her brand. (She used to sell very pretty boxes and stopped.) "The shop features an assortment of brands" that she uses in her life because they spark joy, and people kept asking what she uses. If she wanted to sell out she could partner with The Container Store or something, not sell expensive boring table cloths that no one is going to impulse-buy.

shadesofmysoul She’s clearly using, then, the unhappiness of the people that think they need to have the exact same things as her to be happy because they’ve tried the method, didn’t work, and instead of thinking the method is flawed, and seeing that she is a pretty effective skinny, young and airy marketing tool, now, they think that if they have the exact same things as her, they are going to be skinny, young and peaceful looking like her. If you actually watched any of her videos you would know that she never told people to get rid of everything they own. Her method and message was simple and clear. Get rid of the things that you no longer need or which no longer *sparks joy*. So really even if your home is super cluttered you don't have to get rid of any of it, if it brings you joy. Therefore, her opening a shop, which sells products she recommends, products which are her style does not make her a hypocrite. Also, no one's forcing you to buy anything. If you think the prices are a bit too much than don't buy it. It's that simple.
