For me; Kyros having his wife die in his metal arms, not being able to feel her warmth, while she doesn't know who he is or remember their life together at all.. that has always been a top tier depressing backstory

It kinda reminded me how Ace died without knowing Sabo was alive, and how Sabo didn't know who Ace was until after he was dead. Sugar's devil fruit is pure evil. I can't even imagine how Kyros must have felt.

It's even more depressing to flip the story, where Scarlet had no clue how she got her baby. She knew there had to be someone, but everytime she tried to remember, it was just her and Rebecca. She ended up dying in the hands of the person she would probably be desperately trying to remember, and still does not recognise any part of it. To her, he is simply rambling things. Not only that, she died specifically because she forgot Kyros. She cant remember why she would be "hiding" from society, nor the fact that she literally stated she would wait at the shack. And anytime Scarlet did remember something that Kyros said, as proven later by Rebecca, it was just a random guard that they liked being around.

Evidence of the Boa sisters' more twisted past is the way she uses her devil fruit to affect those attracted to her, but she tends to refer to that as men having "wicked thoughts". She equates lust with evil, and the fact that Luffy doesn't show any attraction to her is what actually lets her consider that he could be a good person, despite being a man.

Some victims of sexual abuse make themselves "ugly" after the traumatic experience to diminish the likelihood of being abused again. Boa did the opposite, she would use her beauty to regain control and power and her fruit is a perfect compliment to that. Besides, Oda always likes to hide meaningful elements in the devil fruits he gives to many of his characters so they reflect something characteristic of them. From Doffy and using threads because he's a puppet master, or Moria being a "shadow of his former self", to Boa who is just another example of that.
@islandboy9381

@@scribalma_hYou know what I never put it together that Moria's fruit and his plans with them actually complimented the state he was in in Thriller Bark and that made me appreciate the arc a bit more (and let's be honest if Luffy didn't have the 100 shadows mcguffin on his side the SH would have flat out lost, Moria wasn't a complete pushover either).

@@islandboy9381Another great example is Doflamingo, a puppet master character (ie. A master manipulator using others the further his goals) with literal puppet master powers. Baby 5 who's so obsessed with being useful that she literally becomes a weapon, any weapon you need. One of the most common things amongst most mythologies is some kind of storm/thunder Deity, Thor, Zeus and Susano-o being the most well known. So what better power for an Eminem look a like that thinks he's a God? Not all of them are obvious but some are really on the nose.

Another story that Oda couldn't make is Franky and the abandoned ship, remember he had to do self-surgery to himself literally head-to-toe with whatever he can find. The bloody implication is insane and the untold pain he had to go through, though getting hit by a full-speed sea train might have messed with his nervous system.

THANK YOU for mentioning the Neptune Brothers’ backstory! It’s seriously one of the most underrated tragic backstories in the whole series, and yet no one talks about it, much less even seem to remember it! The fact that Ryuboshi and Manboshi are introduced in the present with these strange and slightly grating speech quirks that get recontextualized with their heartbreaking origin is such an emotional gut punch. But at the same time, the fact that they have essentially permanently altered their speech mannerisms to continue making their sister’s rather bleak life just a little bit better is just so touching. I’m permanently endeared to these goofy little mermen dudes and hate the fact that they’re so overlooked.

Kind of a throwaway line, but there was a particularly dark moment in Doffy's flashback. When the mob was giving all their reasons for hating the Celestial Dragons, one woman told the story of her daughter who was a former slave. She said that her daughter came home after being a slave for years, but was clearly broken emotionally and wouldnt speak of what happened to her. A few days after she came home, she killed herself. Similar to Boa, it doesnt take too much imagination to figure out what the nobles must have done to her. Like i say, its good the story of One Piece is as colorful and light-hearted as it is, because the world of One Piece is a bleak, horrible place.

You're missing a bit what was said; in that SBS reply, Oda noted "Dressrosa is truly a passionate country!" And in the vivre cards it was stated: Doflamingo and Viola had a "complex" passionate relationship. For Viola, it was a relationship of both love and hate towards Doflamingo, which is the reason she calls him "Doffy". Seems fairly different than whatever Hancock might've potentially experienced.

The conventional wisdom among Japanese fans is that Violet's ability is the key. Doflamingo regularly suffers from PTSD due to past tragedies. It is unknown whether Violet was assaulted or to infiltrate the Family, but assuming she spent the night with Doflamingo, it is possible that she used the power of the Devil Fruit against Doflamingo. Therefore, it is possible that Violet became somewhat sympathetic after learning about Doflamingo's suffering. Also, when Doflamingo compared the relationship between himself and Corazon to the relationship between Violet and Rebecca, it is possible that he felt some kind of feelings for Violet. It's also possible that Doflamingo was aware that Violet knew about his PTSD. By all accounts, Dressrosa is complex and passionate.

It's not just that Oda can't show it because of the platform(WSJ), it's also a Choice by him, because whenever he does something like this, merely hinting at atrocities and tragedies, he basically let it be up to the reader's imagination. you can choose to believe the Boa Sisters were... violated repeatedly in those 4 years, but you can also imagine that the Celesetial Dragons saw them as pets and not humans so they just toyed with them in a slightly less horrible ways. and im happy for that decision, because i personally tend to think of the optimistic outcomes rather than the bad outcomes.

Back when I was a young teen, reading the Sabody Archipelago Arc, the scene of charlos riding his slave horrified me! It was because of that, I learned just how evil and insane slavery really was. And how widespread and long it lasted in the world. Also how it's still occurring in several parts of the world today.😢 It was a truly painful experience, but it did help me to grow as a person. Maybe that's one of the reasons Oda Sensei had included it in One Piece, so people would realize how bad it really is, and that such things still happen in undeveloped countries today.

I'm pretty sure real life slavery wasn't that cartoonishly evil. Slaves cost money, they were investments - so you'd want to have your investments in somewhat decent shape and upkeep. Not dissimilar to how farm equipment is today, with wholesale replacement being more costly than being celestial dragon levels of abusive. That's on average. There's still plenty of terrible abuse going on in world today that isn't limited to slavery... but then also human trafficking is still very much kept alive in the black markets by those in power... 😢

@@ChronoSquare it depends. For Europeans it was an investment and they took good care of slaves. Most harsh treatments were for slaves who kept trying to escape or didn't want to work. They didn't want their investment to be killed or run away and wanted more of them to reproduce. English treated their investments well, French and Spanish were harsh rulers. If your talking about Muslims then they imported like 10 million of them, castrated them so they couldn't breed and it made them more docile, or butchered black children from women. They were treated as disposable and they easily replaced them via the Sahara routes. They did live a life similar to one piece. If your talking about African slavery then they raided and enslaved entire regions to trade for luxuries and cared nothing about them. Africans of today still joke and celebrate having sold off all the "dumb" ones. Manda Musa which is the richest man to live for that way by depopulating entire regions of people to sell to the muslims. You say it like it’s in any way over: the Africans and North Africans are both up to their necks in it, Yemen currently has more slaves in it than the best guesses for Italy at the height of the empire and Haitians routinely sell their kids to richer relatives as house slaves and playthings (restavek). Many of the chancers heading to Europe for a “better life/adventure” on the welfare systems there are sold off by the smugglers they pay to get them in. That’s not even factoring in all the countries (often communist) who’re keeping entire populations as political prisoners doing hard labour. As for the cartoonish evil, depends on the races and locations, but generally a chattel slave is too valuable for this, whereas if an indentured worker is killed on the job, you don’t have to free them…fate of many an Irish in the south.

To me one of the harshest flashbacks, which people talk incredibly little about (probably because they wanna forget the character ever existed lol) is Yamato's. Oda didn't make it long at all, but he showed enough to truly disturb anyone paying attention. Imagine as a child being completely neglected by your only parent because he only respects strength. Watching someone die a gruesome death one day makes you admire him, but that death was provoked by your father, so he mocks and hates you for idolizing him saying in a way, that you'll never be as good as him, his daughter will never be as good as the man he just murdered and cared quite little about. After that, being thrown in a cave to starve and rot, but being helped by the friends of this very man , that should hate you for being Kaido's daughter, and after running away growing up completely alone, because every single friend you make, or every single person that tries to help you dies in front of your eyes, so you're alone because you have to. After all that suffering and hatred towards Kaido, you see the inner child in her when she still believes he wouldn't actually kill her, when Luffy takes her cuffs and they explode, it is a brilliant writing maneuver by Oda to present as a gag something so dark as Yamato still hoping that her father somewhat cares, and having those hopes shattered when she sees that he truly was trying to kill her if she disobeyed. The flashback is quite short, so Oda didn't hsve the time to flesh out every emotion like he usually does, but imo it's one of the harshest flashbacks in op

Fujitora's mysterious backstory is made even more horrific by... *everything else in this video.* Because if Oda was willing to reveal all of those other twisted nightmares, how much worse would Fujitora's experiences have to be to get swept under the rug by the narrative? And while the true answer might be that it was too revealing of endgame plot secrets like The Gorosei's mysterious shadow powers to show that early, that explanation can certainly exist *alongside* the idea that the details were so horrifying that even someone willing to reveal accidental cannibalism, multiple years of $@% slavery, and impressionably young kids having to hide in a pile of corpses found a line he couldn't cross.

Also, just let it sink in that the Navy that Fujitora dedicated his life to was not the one thing that would give him hope, but rather it was Luffy, a pirate.
@j.a1905

as for Fujitora, I think he blinded himself in order not to see the faces of the people he helps. We all know that he is a righteous guy that values helping others more than any Sakazuki-esque justice, so maybe he once served in a war between two nations and everytime he helped someone in the battlefield that someone went and murdered more of his enemies and did bad, very bad things to the opposition, and this happened to Fuji many, many times in his life that he feels that helping people is doing more bad than good. So the two Fujis in him put the not so lucky real Fuji in a dielemma that tore him apart between wanting to help others and not wanting the ones he helped to go and cause more atrocities, so he came up with a smart yet a stupid Idea of blinding himself so he can help people without knowing who they are when they are in need and he would defeat those same people when they do bad things, it's like a saparation of the two things and treating each case on its own, that way he doesn't loose his mind everytime he sees the person that he helped kill others.

The boa backstory is especially gross if you remember that the celestial dragons are bumbling fools, so feeding two people "snake fruit" to turn them into snake people for entertainment is something I can see them doing, but I just cannot see them feeding their most beautiful slave something called "love fruit" for that reason and actually expecting petrification powers. If a world noble bought a "love fruit" I somehow think that they were expecting a very different effect on the user.

I can see no reason why they would even allow their slaves to be able to use their devil fruit abilities, thats a risk if anything. My guess is they just force fed them those fruit because apparently they taste nasty, and to throw them into a pool or similar and watch them drown for fun.

I don't agree with this interpretation about Violet. This was Oda's quote about Violet and Doflamingo : "There is a deep secret setting I can't tell you about though. I informed the supervisor about it, but since it is a pretty adult part of the story it remains hidden in the shonen manga which One Piece is. To all adults, please try to imagine yourselves. Dressrosa is truly a passionate country!!". That is a *very* casual way of referring to their adult relationship. Do you really think Oda would use such a relaxed phrasing if Doflamingo forced / coerced Violet into sex? I don't, personally. You cannot describe sexual coercion as an example of Dressrosa "truly being a passionate country". That would be insanely flippant and not appropriate for such a heavy topic. Imo what is much more likely is that Violet chose of her own free will to use her charms as a woman to seduce Doflamingo in order to infiltrate his organization and gain information or some kind of advantage over him. So unless Oda confirms otherwise, my interpretation is that Violet is the one who initiated the relationship in order to try to manipulate Doflamingo.

i definitely appreciate Oda's willingness to explore hard and dark themes, Boa Hancock is one HUGE example, there's no shot that she wasnt SA'd, they were kept alive easily because of their beauty, hence Hancock's ego that she can get away with it. omg Linlin's backstory absolutely shook me to the core when i saw it, she unknowingly cannibalized her fellow orphans and Mother Caramel (deserved far as she goes. . .) in her sugary high. i didnt see that coming and i dont think anyone else did either. additionally that hints how Blackbeard took Whitebeard's power away, pretty scary notion, but what's scarier is that it doesnt seem like BB is stopping with just his "father" of sorts. blech, Hogback, that guy was the worst. . . stalker/necrophile. . . gross. Hordy Jones was the product of Racism for sure, had no reason to go off like he did, but still hated humans because that is the environment they grew up in, while other fishmen hated on the people who wronged them personally or by association that was the milk that Hordy and his group nursed on. the Kurozumi clan were bad eggs, but they didnt deserve to be hunted down and exterminated by vigiliantes, they might have not tried anything at all after their elder failed to kill the Shogun, but such acts of hatred only bred greater hate into the survivors. just goes to show why vigilante justice is penalized in our world, imagine the hate that could be bred from those taking justice into their own hands. Baby 5, wow i forgot about her, tbf i didnt know her story due to not reading the manga. i think he saw both the evils of Piracy AND the World Government, and in seeing nothing but evil around hom, he chose to remove his sight so that he didnt have to see it anymore, quite possibly in knowing that he in no way could do anything about all that evil.

Hiyori's past is arguably the most tragic, simply because her torment lasted over a decade unlike many others that were a one time thing. And they didn't even hide what was happening. In order to survive, she had to prostitute herself out. And not only did she have to prostitute herself out, she had to prostitute herself out to the man that killed her father and caused her people to starve. And the entire time she couldn't so much as shed a single tear or she would have been beheaded. That's horrific. Oda is definitely not shy to include topics like that, so I don't think it's unreasonable to think the Celestial Dragons weren't just buying cute girls to look at 😬 Though it pains me to think that's the reason the Boa sisters hate men so much, especially since they were so young. One of the things I've always wondered is, where did the navy get the Green bull and Fujitora? There are 2 hypotheses: one is that the navy opened a job position and whoever wanted it, sent in their CV and applied (like a onepiece linkedin). and the other option was that they were both vice-admirals who simply got promoted. Both options are frightening because the first means that there are simply people wandering around the onepiece world with powers equivalent to admirals. And the second means that there's a chance that several of the vice-admirals have powers equal to or similar to the current admirals and simply don't have room to be promoted. Fujitora may have seen what the Kozuki did to Kurozumi, before the reign of Kaido, when the Kurozumi tried to kill Oden's father and the "justice" that followed after that. Kaido in a way was JoyBoy and freed some people, but after that, he just continues being like the oppresors before him.

It would be interesting if what Fujitora saw actually was one or multiple of the other things mentioned in this video. Seeing the world nobles doing their thing in general, but maybe specifically what despicable acts they performed on the Boa sisters. Maybe he traveled past a town so poor they didn't even name their children and considered them burdens. Maybe he saw Hogback stealing the fresh corpse of a beautiful young lady for some gut-wrenching purpose.

It'd be cool if it were all sides, rich and poor, famous and unknown, Marines or pirates, or simply plain civilians. But the one that caused him to blind himself could be the last straw, possibly something that happened to/because of a close person.

I imagine Fujitora as a Free man once took a day off to Travel And thus came to visit Water 7 Where by Sheer Coincidence all Hotels were Booked But Luck struck him, As a kind Patron of a Bar he happend to find shelter in and offered him a place to stay the night in exchange for a few Drinks As the Sun rose that morning, Fujitora quickly found himself waking up in an unfamiliar setting And just in that moment did the kind Drinking buddy step out of the Bathroom after taking a much needed Shower having forgotten her Roommate for the Night And there Poor Fujitora sat Witnessing Granny Kokoro in all her Glory And that is the Story all about how Fujitora came to Blinding himself

Fujitora probly saw the paperwork of all the other stories on the list. He read about the atrocities of the world nobles. The hopelessness many experience in the world of one piece. And the tragedies that occur of the same circumstances. Then to top it all off he sees the power the Marines and the World Government has. To just sit by and not act. Or he saw an elephant murder his trainer who was his Father. Not sure.

We forget that the Kozuki Clan tried to cleanse the Kurozumi Clan. It's very understandable why Orochi would want to do it. We never see anyone apologize to Orochi for it, ever! Hyori only reiterates the hatred towards them rather than understanding their grief and plight.

I seem to remember that more than just the Kozukis hunted the Kurozumi clan. Besides, despite that a lot of the killings were undeserved (the very large part - I'm not condoning genocide or the idea of inherited sin in any way, shape or form), at least a few were somewhat well-deserved since they did try to kill the shogun, and that's just not done in a shogunate. But I agree that Orochi should've been treated better, and apologized to... as a child. As an adult he was not worth it anymore imho, he was too far gone in his corrupted views and there was too much blood on his hands. Besides, I think he'd have wiped his butt with such apologies anyway at that point, and would've made a mockery out of the apologetics who - just like him - were innocent to those crimes. I don't remember Oden being a part of those killings for example (I'm not sure but I think he was either too young or too unborn, which is just the extreme version of "too young"), yet Orochi made a fool out of him for five years and then had him executed anyway. There is a point down the timeline where apologies just don't cut it anymore - from either side. Just to be clear though, I understand your sentiment - I just also think that current timeline Orochi wouldn't understand your sentiment but would only want apologies as expression of their submission to him, not as a reason to make peace.
