To me, one of the most egregious (partly because it's important character development, partly because it fixes a stupid character interaction, partially because it would've been SO easy to fix) was Usopp playing dead for Chu. What we got was Usopp lying on the ground, Chu thinking him dead, Chu turning around, Usopp standing up, Usopp yelling, completely wasting the element of surprise. What we could've gotten is Usopp lying on the ground, Chu thinking him dead, Chu turning around, Usopp standing up, Usopp brushing off his pants and practicing his excuses, Usopp slowly realising he can't let Chu go, Usopp yelling, completely wasting the element of surprise not because he is stupid but because he decided to be brave and needs to keep Chu's attention. It would've cost very little extra to film, it would've cost not even a minute of runtime, it would've been so much better.

@dracocrusher Жыл бұрын
It's literally in the last episode, too. You could have absolutely cut, say, the opening recap and some Garp stuff, and you'd have plenty of room for it. I like the version of Usopp they have, but this was a big let down and I think it comes from this being a VERY different take on the character. Like, manga Usopp is a goofy sniveling coward that's constantly afraid and has to really work and struggle to fight people. It's what makes him so endearing. But Netflix Usopp is more like this cool charismatic hype man, right? Like he doesn't bluff as much as he exaggerates to sell the story. And that's not a bad character, but it means you lose the parts of Usopp that made him so distinct in the first place. With the changes, it makes the framing feel like he's not doing the fight to prove something to himself and overcome his own weakness. He's doing it because it's the cool thing to do and he wants to show off. Which makes sense for Netflix Usopp, but it's just not as compelling, I think.

I think my least favourite change in the series was Luffy and Koby specifically wanting to be “good” pirates and marines, because it kinda undermines a lot of what Luffy feels about piracy. Manga Luffy doesn’t want to be beholden to any kind of label other than the one he builds up for himself, and does things both good and bad purely on a whim. He invades prisons and lets out terrible criminals without a second thought if it helps him, and he also liberates nations because he simply doesn’t like how they’re being run. He’s not a “good” pirate or a “bad” pirate. He’s a free one. It’s the explicit purpose of that scene in Fishman Island where the residents ask the Straw Hats if they’re there to be allies or enemies to FI, and Luffy says “You can decide that for yourselves!!” Manga Luffy doesn’t care about being “good”, he cares about his friends and his family and his own personal whims. I think the harder the Live action pushes the whole “good pirate” thing the more departures they’ll have to make from Luffy’s character as they go along.

Someone who’s “good” wouldn’t look at a bunch of evil escaped convicts and go “this is fine because it helps me specifically” Luffy’s not a hero, he doesn’t do good things and avoid bad things for the sake of being “good”, he does whatever he wants for the sake of being free

You can read good as competent too, you know. Being a competent pirate or marine is just as good as being good. Besides, Shanks wanted Luffy to be a good person, not necessarily a good pirate (though I think, considering he left his had behind, he expects at least some level of ability to shine and grow enough to be counted as good when they meet again). Overall, to ignore the fact that Garp and Shanks are both good characters in their own respective fields and expect their proteges to not follow that course is kinda stupid, tbh. Are they shining saints? Hell no. But they are good. Despite the things they do, they are both ultimately good.

@@7thlittleleopard7 the live action makes an explicit distinction between being a good person and a competent pirate that the manga never makes. As a reader, I liked the increase in focus on Garp/Coby/Helmeppo a lot. Some of my favorite bits of One Piece are when we get perspectives from other people reacting to the things the crew is doing, so this was perfect for me. Also, the marine actors absolutely nailed their roles imo. Only thing I'd change is Garp appearing to legitimately be thwarted by Luffy. This guy is a living legend. He was Gold Roger's biggest marine adversary. There's no believable way he fails to catch Luffy while trying hard to do so, and then throws a tantrum about it. I hope Smoker/Tashigi end up getting the Garp/Coby treatment in season 2. Tashigi in particular.

Personally thought it fit well enough with the set up of the live action. Pushing aside his manga/anime portrayal, imagine that OPLA was preparing to have only 1 season: He was shown to have some sort of ambiguous relationship with Roger in the prologue, but if they followed the original route, he'd be a character with this weird focus that just disappears even tho we know he exists. So, he needed to have a reason to continue to exist that the viewers, esp new viewers, wouldn't scratch their heads over. Like, why would a Vice-Admiral be following a no-named pirate just bc he stole a map to the Grand Line? And it's not like they couldn't make either side not acknowledge they recognize each other now that they're in the same plotline. It makes more sense, story-wise, to reveal their relationship sooner bc of that. I do think they played up Garp's antagonistic/serious side to build up the surprise that he's Luffy's grandpa, but his characterization here reminds me of how he was in Marineford with Ace. He does worry abt his grandkids and is stuck in a hard place in regards to his desire for them to be in a safe place and their dreams. And I appreciated how the live action showcased that. Plus, it helped to build up Coby's (and Helmeppo's) story and set a good bookend for him to come back at the final episode. I also like how it tied in Mihawk and gave us more insight to how the warlords and WG operates in this world. Personally, I always thought it was weird, in retrospect, that Mihawk, of all ppl, needed to chase down a pirate like Don Kreig (tho I do miss how his role bolstered Sanji's "no-one goes hungry" values). That's not to say I don't think they couldn't have left his part out. Maybe they could've and just had a clip of Coby finding out abt Luffy's wanted poster at the end while he was working as a Marine under Garp and kept Garp as a cameo. But I do think it worked to fit into the live action's story, so I can see why ppl, esp non-anime fans, enjoyed it.

I agree. I saw so many saying, "Who cares about Don Krieg?" Or, "No one better be complaining about cutting Don Krieg." And I'm like, "Well it's not just about Krieg, but the developmental stuff and beats that are lost when his battle is cut." You're spot on that it is a big change.. We have Sanji telling Gin he chose wrong man to follow, all the stuff Zeff says about how Luffy has grit and doesn't give up, and that it's more important than military arms and might, and all the times Sanji and Zeff and Patty are amazed by Luffy's fighting.. Sanji reflecting on Zoro and Luffy both going for their dreams against long odds, and how maybe he should. And the part where Zeff takes his time to tell Sanji that Luffy can't swim was a gr8 cap of humor to put onto all the drama and action of the scene. I also liked Gin asking Krieg to spare them, and then finishing Krieg himself when Krieg is sore loser.. I have always wondered if we would get the answer to if Gin survived and we would see him on Grand Line somewhere in manga, but I digress.. Edit: Oh and Sanji starts trying to sacrifice himself(a theme w Sanji) amd lets them beat him up to try to save Baratie and Luffy hitting him and telling him it's dumb to give his life to save the Baratie bc Zeff didn't save his life for him to give it up for this. Another gr8 part imo

Yes, but all that stuff just impacts the Baratie arc. It's essentially a fight that just gives Sanji motivation to join. It has no greater impact on the overall story. @@misterwhyte This is my feeling as well. In the LA version, the main impetus for Sanji joining Luffy is that Sanji and Zeff had a (honestly pretty childish) fight, and Sanji happened to have an open invitation from a passing pirate captain. It almost seemed motivated more by spite and rebelliousness than anything, and that felt really off to me. Joining Luffy's crew required getting over a huge activation barrier for manga Sanji, because manga Sanji was held in the Baratie's orbit by his own stubbornness and cynicism and survivor's guilt, and those are too powerful for either Sanji or Zeff to get over themselves. If Luffy was one millimeter less driven and charismatic than he was, Sanji would still be there. LA Sanji feels like he has completely different motivations, both for staying and for leaving.

You mentioned most of the biggest changes already, but a particular important one for me, was the way they handled Usopp's fight with Chuu. In the manga/anime, after playing dead he starts covering himself with dirt so he can pretend he did his best and just let Zoro or Sanji finish off Chuu, but then as he remembers how the others put their lives in the line for real, he slowly realizes how pathetic he's being and that if he can't do the same, he doesn't deserve to sail with them. So as Chuu is walking away, Usopp stands back up and tells him their fight isn't over. That is to me, one of the greatest Usopp moments in general, and his first real big step to becoming a great warrior of the sea. So it was disappointing that the live action just ignored it, and made it so Usopp was always planning to stand up after Chuu got close enough.

i think the actual worst part of them adapting Garp into the main focus of East Blue is that because they have so many extra scenes of Garp it means there's less screen time for the actual main characters. Usopp lost quite a lot of development, everyone lost at least 1 or 2 major fights (sanji didn't get to fight gin, Zoro lost Hachi, luffy lost Krieg etc.), and multiple characters were cut entirely. It makes me wonder: was Garp added in because they knew they didn't have the budget/scope to do a 1 to 1 adaptation? Garp is actually one of the easier characters to adapt since he's mostly a "big strong old guy" so there isn't much need for sfx
@thatoneguywhosaysbyethenwa1720 Жыл бұрын
Spot on. If they could they would add every one of those pivotal fight scenes and more, but they didn't have have kind of money so they had to compromise. And they did it well. If everyone would stop wanting it to be exactly like the manga or anime, creators could make a unique experience while retaining the main plot and theme of it. If you want the anime, just watch the anime
@ToddWillis197 Жыл бұрын
The answer I give to your question is no (not really). You're right in that Garp doesn't need a lot of sfx if adapted to real people but I think it's not all there is. First, they let Garp appear very early compared to himself in the manga to become the main obstacle throughout season1. If you notice, the East Blue saga focuses almost exclusively on the story of the Straw Hats, about their past, their barriers and how they overcame it to realize their dreams... This is the theme throughout of the manga One Piece Zoro has Mihawk as a huge wall that he has no chance of overcoming, Sanji is stuck between the two choices of staying and leaving Baratie, Nami is being held back by Arlong and almost gives up her dream. and Usopp are similar but what about Luffy? In the East Blue saga, no one is truly Luffy's main obstacle and that's why Garp is here, he will act as the biggest challenge that Luffy must overcome in this first season. Besides, it shows Garp's concern for Luffy, unlike the manga where he only appears when Ace is about to die or Luffy is targeted by the world government. In live-action, he knew Luffy was stubborn and certainly wouldn't do what he wanted but at least he tried to stop him. Campare Garp, Don Krieg and Gin have no input into the future story line, and with the limited duration they currently appear, what impression will they leave behind? So instead of letting them appear, they can focus more on other things.
@AstralTaurus Жыл бұрын
@ToddWillis197 i understand your point but I'm not sure this was a necessary change then. Luffy doesn't have a "big wall" to overcome in East Blue because that's not really the point of East Blue. Luffys main goals of East Blue are: -Finding a crew -getting a proper ship - and eventually heading out to the grand line Luffy is able to gain the respect of his crew by showing how dedicated he is to them; he saves each of them from their primary dilemmas and this earns their respect. Garp is not Luffys main obstacle and it doesn't make sense to make him out to be. Garp didn't even want luffy to be a pirate, and even when he does it takes quite a while for Garp to even acknowledge him (he doesn't show up till after Enies Lobby in the main story for a reason). Even when Luffy gets his bounty up to 1.5 bill Garp still considers him to be small fry, so the idea of him taking time out of his schedule to chase Luffy around East Blue doesn't really make sense. I get the idea of wanting a big obstacle for luffy, but that's the entire purpose of both Don Krieg and Arlong, both of which were toted as the reigning forces of East Blue and both are nearly successful in killing luffy. They challenge luffys beliefs and Luffy is successful in showing them both that you don't have to be a bloodthirsty bastard to be a great pirate. Luffy does ironically enough, get that "wall" on the navy side when he first meets smoker in Loguetown who is basically untouchable at that point in the story. Luffy doesn't need a big barrier to overcome in East Blue because Oda was saving that for when the crew first begins their journey on the Grand Line
@ToddWillis197 Жыл бұрын
@AstralTaurus I don't know how to explain you that how good and how I love about Garp's changes are in the show but I think I can give it a try. That's why they had to change their approach to satisfy both of these opposing audiences and most of the things about Garp were to serve the purpose. The main theme of season 1 of One Piece Netflix is "chasing your dreams despite any challenges" and the changes in live action are to highlight it. Manga and Anime have a lot of time so this can be shown slowly and spread throughout the storyline but live action series are different, there are things that have to be established from the beginning. If it were made exactly like a manga or anime but with a limited time of live action, the story of Luffy would be very lackluster. As mentioned above, all StrawHat except Luffy in manga/anime have main obstacles that prevent them from achieving their dreams, which can be due to themselves, external factors or someone influences on them... But Luffy has none of the obstacles can really be called "challenges" for him. It's true that Arlong and Don Krieg are Luffy's obstacles and they almost killed Luffy several times but is it right to call them his "challenges"? No, because Luffy's fight with them did not originate from him but because they affected the rights and benefits of his friends, he fought for his friends. Overall, Luffy's fight with them does not show the weight of his psychology, it does not show his determination, passion or desire for freedom on the path to becoming Pirate King, the main battles more about his friends. Garp is different from Arlong or Don Krieg, he is not a mere marine he is Luffy's grandfather, Garp is the person who has had the greatest influence on Luffy since he was a child, which is why he is a perfect challenge for live action Luffy, not Smoker (however Smoker may be one of Luffy's biggest challenges in season two). Garp loves Luffy, although he doesn't want his grandchildren to become pirates, that doesn't mean he doesn't respect his grandchildren's decisions and after the fight when Luffy surpasses Garp's text, it shows the message ""follow your dreams despite any challenges" clearly of the first 5 of StrawHats. All the first five members of the Straw Hat crew are common styles among young people today. Zoro is a person with a big dream and is trying every day to make it come true Nami represents those who cannot realize that dream and personal problems such as food, clothing, money.. Usopp represents people who are starting to find what they really want to do and same for Sanji, Koby... Especially Luffy, who represents people who are big dreamers but are opposed by their families (common in Asian families and mine too). Establishing these from the beginning will make non-fans and young people feel close to the characters. Even if they have never known these characters before, I'm pretty sure they will still find something in common between them and the StrawHat to like them and will want to see how they make their dreams come true. As an aside, what you describe as Garp is in the manga/anime which is exactly what I hate about this character. In the manga he did not meet Luffy until the end of the Water 7 arc, the relationship between him and his nephews Ace and Luffy was shown quickly so when I saw Garp cry when Ace was about to execute and the flashback scene of him and Ace appeared, I didn't find it touching but just forced... In One Piece Netflix this relatively fully established relationship at the beginning of season one, it will be a solid foundation for his appearances later. These are my thoughts on the changes to Garp in One Piece Netflix, you can like it or hate it, agree or disagree with what I wrote. Whatever, I just want you to understand better why I like and appreciate this change

My biggest complaint about the live action would be a bit too much subtext getting turned to text, and 5-10 minutes missing from episode 7 (could've taken those from episode 3-4 and/or some Garp stuff) to truly see the Nami despair escalation, with her saying she'd do it again to the villagers. My second biggest complaint is Usopp doing nothing in his arc And third is loss of agency of characters like Genzo. 4th... sanji not witnessing Zoro vs Mihawk And 5th, how nerfed Luffy is, somehow getting hurt by punches and kicks (edit: feels like only Jobst (director) understood the GomuGomu no mi, and even then, not that much during episode 2) Edit: overall a fun 8/10 viewing experience, and I can understand people rating anything between 7 and 9.

Nerfing Luffy irritated me the most. He supposed to be the strongest in the crew or arguably just as strong as Zoro. I don't like it. And yeah, they erased Usopp's redeaming features.....It pisses me off. As the only black character it already annoyed me, but if it's like Usopp from the anime/manga, Cool I'll get over it. This one sigh, I actually loved his casting, I am regretting it. And no I don't like Garp's change in character. That what made me like Garp so much. He is a meat head like Luffy.

The only time we see Luffy seriously hurt by punches and kicks was Garp and Arlong right? I just assumed Arlong was using Fishman Karate, especially when he splashed water onto Luffy and Luffy reacted like he had been decked across the face. I do agree that they could've conveyed that information better though. My only complaint is Usopp not getting to do anything in Syrup Village. Everything else I can live with, I think it's far more important to nail the Straw Hats than making sure all of the side characters are equally as good as their manga counterparts.
@MrxD-cg5xs Жыл бұрын
One explanation I could see for Garp being so serious in the life action is that he acts that way because this is personal for him. After all the whole reason we are given for why Garp is pursuing Luffy in the first place is, because he wants to show Luffy how dangerous and unforgiving the pirate world is to get him to stop wanting to be one. So after Luffy made it very clear that he has no intention to stop no matter what Garp does, this could lead to us seeing a much more accurate depiction of Garp in the future, considering that his other missions are usually not this personal to him. Anyway, my biggest issue with the life action remake is that Luffy seems to be taking damage from dull attacks, like in his fight with Arlong. That would have been much better if Arlong actually used his blade there to force Luffy back and then sink the ship he was standing on to make him drop into the sea, ending the brawl. Plus it would have had much more of an impact when Arlong pulled out the same sword in Arlong Park and Luffy breaks it, plus it would have had much more of an impact when Garp hit Luffy and actually injured him with his "fist of love". Also Buggy seems to be able to launch his feet like he does with everything else, which is against his Devil Fruits rules of them always remaining on the ground. Not to mention him moving his body when he is tied up in Arlong Park, which, once again, goes against the rules of his Devil Fruit, which is supposed to have a clear range on it, outside of which he loses control of his body.

I still have to wildly disagree about Garp, sure he's a little less outright silly, but he's still very much Garp at his core, torn between wanting to protect his grandson and letting him live his dream. I actually really liked how he would get angry about Luffy escaping while also being proud of him, and it felt like it connected even more with Luffy's anger as a child.

I would also add a couple things about Nami. She willingly shows Arlong her maps so she can join his crew, when it's the opposite, Arlong kidnap her after seeing her maps. And in the Live Action she says that she already has the money to buy the village, which makes no sense, because if she had it, she would have already tried to buy the village. Usopp is badly treated in the Live Action, not only because the removal of Jango. In the fight against the fishman, he fakes his death with ketchup, and suddenly attack the fishman, which makes no sense because they left out the part when he changes from cowardly running away and make excuses to facing his fear to not let down his friends.
@Pooglian Жыл бұрын
I noted the "Nami going to Arlong" issue on another channel's reaction video. In the manga/anime, Arlong is the one to emphasize how he always keeps his word when it comes to money and builds up Nami's belief that their deal would be honored once she has the money. While you could say that it being her idea gives the character more agency, nothing about LA Arlong makes you think he'd honor _any_ promise to a human. Maybe young Nami who proposed the deal would have been gullible enough to think it would work, but the jaded, distrustful present-day Nami should have seen that coming miles away and have been planning an alternate solution.

They could've had it where Nami's time with Luffy and the others was also involved her last haul for the 100 Million but we never see her with any money stashed away. Nor we see her steal anything except from Kaya which is the opposite from her manga counterpart who only stole from pirates. Also her disdain for the rich wasn't in the manga either. They could've had her take Buggy's treasure and kept in the moment where Luffy leaves half of it for the town, but instead replaces it with yet another scene to remind us that Luffy likes food.

Speaking as a someone completely unfamiliar with OP going in, the time spent with Garb and Koby is one of my favorite elements of the show, and is far from wasted screen time, especially after a rewatch. It emphasizes one of the core themes of the Netflix adaptation, that “some pirates are good, some pirates are bad, some marines are good, some marines are bad. Be a good marine.” This is further aided with the gradual redemption of Helmeppo and begrudging, burgeoning friendship with Koby. I can only take Netflix OP as it’s own thing, but I think it needs to be able to stand on its own. You’re never going to get everything when you compress 200 chapters into 8 episodes.

I think that the change that I disliked the most was luffy getting shocked and really heated when listening to nami's back story even though originally luffy just ignored it. My main issue with it is that luffy not listening and still saves nami shows a lot about his true character, not caring about the past but still deeply caring about his crew
@lemonworm Жыл бұрын
Damn yeah i think this moment adds some of the most specific nuance to luffys character. Luffy actually seemed annoyed at the notion that hearing nami's backstory should change anything about his perspecive and purposefuly decides he wont hear it because his mind is made up. Luffy doesnt need context or background to know why hes saving her. Hes just going to save her and thats that. Hes not this perfect good boy who patiently listens, hears you out and reacts accordingly, or is concerned at all with peoples perception of his actions. He is perfectly content having nojiko think hes an asshole in that moment. I think the live action is a little unsure how to approach this nuance to luffy.

While it is true that we never see the moment of Gold Roger's death in the manga, live action depiction of Roger's death appears to be based on how the anime depicted it during the Loguetown arc, being that it was sunny, Roger seemed to be impaled, and also Smoker was there (wearing the same cloths in both the anime and the live action show, no less). It does throw in some things that were canon in the manga as well (specifically chapter 0), such as Dragon, Mihawk, Shanks and I *think* Buggy also being present. I'm not entirely sure what to think about Hachi's presence in the live action show. On the one hand, if the credits of the show are true, he IS in the the series, he just doesn't look recognizably like Hachi. On the other hand, I'm kind of okay with the live action show downplaying Hachi's presence among Arlong's crew. Moreso than Jimbei (who's harm against Nami was indirect at best and would have put a stop to it had he known about it), Hachi later becoming an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates never fully sat right with me, given how directly involved in Nami's suffering he was (in no small part because he found the map that lead to Nami being forced into Arlong's crew). Not to mention, he's practically a different character by the time of Shabody Archipelago, so yeah, maybe not having him during the Arlong Park arc is a good idea... Then again, that does leave Zoro with not much to do other than be back-up for Sanji, so that sucks. The way Luffy eats the Gum Gum Fruit in the show is fascinating, since it almost seems like he's compelled to eat it by some unknown means, then later he claims he did it on purpose to get back at Shanks. I actually kind of like this better than Luffy just accidentally eating a fruit that was sitting in a treasure chest, both because I like how Luffy's deliberate choice to eat it was childishly silly and somewhat petty and thus in-character for a literal child, and also because of later implications that the Gum Gum Fruit has a mind of its own and might have "chosen" Luffy to eat it. Also, notice how the chest containing the Gum Gum Fruit went from being a generic chest in the manga to a chest with a Marine emblem on it? This implies something that isn't revealed until much, MUCH later in the story, which I think is cool. I'm still of the opinion that the gutting of the Baratie arc is my least favorite aspect of the live action One Piece. I do like what was there, I just think certain character beats with Zeff and Sanji were either glossed over or rushed (and yeah, Luffy just leaves the Baratie while still in-debt to Zeff and Zeff doesn't seem to mind at all, maybe I need to rewatch it again to know exactly what was up with that). It's also a shame that Gin's role was significantly reduced, but much like how Jango was cut from the Syrup Village/Kuro arc, it's an unfortunate sacrifice I'm willing to make for this adaptation. Speaking of Syrup Village/Kuro, though, while I do like what they do with the arc and its main villain, and I actually like that Sham and Buchi get a beefed up role, it really does suck that Usopp basically gets reduced to a supporting playing in his own introduction arc. He really does not get a good moment here, whereas in the manga and anime he gets a number of opportunities to prove that despite being a coward, he's still willing to stand up and defend the things he cares about. Moreover, he still gets an important moment by being the one to take down Jango, who's absent in the arc and reduced to a mere wanted poster in the series as a whole (which honestly makes me wonder what he's even doing, and how Kuro managed to trick Morgan into thinking he captured him without Jango, but regardless), so Usopp doesn't even have that going for him. Instead he tries to warn everyone, no one believes him, he stays by Kaya and... that's it. It is a powerful moment where even when Kaya tells him to go away, he sticks by her to ensure her safety, but he still doesn't do all that much in the live action show, it really is a detriment to his character, unfortunately. And yeah, Usopp's cowardice is downplayed in the live action series as a whole, to the point where him declaring his dream is to be a brave warrior of the sea at the end of the first season feels like him just thinking of something to say off the top of his head so he doesn't make the moment awkward. It doesn't feel like a genuine goal he wants to strive for, unlike everyone else. Hopefully, if they do keep Little Garden in season 2, this will get rectified. I'm... ultimately OK with Coco Village not knowing what Nami was doing. Yeah, it's better in the manga, but once again, it's one of those unfortunate sacrifices I'm willing to accept as a result of the adaptation process. And hey, I know several people who started reading the manga and watching the anime as a result of the live-action show, so they'll hopefully be able to see why it works better there, too. ...Though yeah, much like Jango's absence raising questions about how Kuro tricked Morgan, Nojiko's tattoos now make no sense in the live action version; maybe they included that before realizing that cutting the whole "they knew the whole time" means this aspect is a bit nonsensical. This comment is long enough as it is, so in regards to Garp, I'll say I like the idea, ultimately do like the execution, kind of wish it didn't cut into the other stuff so much like with Usopp and Sanji.

Luffy comes off as too "smart" in the live action. In the manga and anime he is a carefree kid that wants to be pirate king. He is not someone who thinks things out which is why he ignores things like social hierarchy. This leads to Robin realizing that she wanted to join the crew because she finally found someone who treated her as a friend despite her past. It also adds to the feeling of family the crew has, they treat Luffy like the little brother who is always getting into trouble.

@nicholasanderson7316 That is a great point. Why even do it in the first place? The truth of the matter is that season 2 is going to be very expensive. Even if they increase the budget it will not be enough. East Blue would be the cheapest saga to make and they couldn't afford to fully do that, even with one of the highest budgets for a TV show. One Piece will only get more crazier from here and it will get more and more expensive. How high do you think the budget will get raised season after season?

Good video. A fair explanation of why most cut things couldn't be done, instead of just nitpicking, even if I'm the first who was nitpicking like crazy when watching it. Syrup -Village- Haunted Mansion gets the first place. I'm still bitter about what they've done to my favorite character and the man with the most weird neck ever, Kuro, but Usopp not having worth at all was even worse. At Baratie he was like best friends with the others and I was like: "what even happened for him to earn that?" "Why did they let him join at all?"
@TheYodelingViking Жыл бұрын
I think Usopp staying with Kaya in the mansion knowing Kuro is coming for her and attacking him giving away his position does show him overcome his cowardice somewhat imo. It's just that his cowardice as a whole wasn't there as much as it should have been. It's not him overcoming his cowardice that's missing. His cowardice itself is just very much toned down. Also the one thing I didn't like was they didn't have him hit Garps mast with the cannon. Hopefully they'll fix it cause him not knowing how to load a cannon which he's never done before isn't a problem, but once they do get it loaded they should show Usopp being pretty damn good at firing it.
@jackjacques7495 Жыл бұрын
Yes the issue is mostly that his cowardice isn't depicted well enough in the live action, so whatever moments of valor he has don't land as well, because the audience hasn't really been given much evidence of him being a coward to begin with. He comes off more as just lacking confidence and being indesicive, rather than being cowardly.

Also I get that they wanted to be careful with his cowardice and I loved him hiding under the table in Baratie, but other than that he so far seems more so a person who tells tall tales about himself to others while he's just lacking confidence rather than being actually scared outside the Baratie scene. Maybe in further seasons they'll try to go further with his cowardice without going overboard. Kind of like Luffys stupidity and Sanjis flirtacious attitude.

I have problems with Namis LA character because of a few changes! 1. In the manga and anime Nami introduce herself as a theif who steal from pirates and indeed steal from every pirate she and the SH encounter, she were making it clear that she were just an ally to Luffy nothing else, she steals from Alvida, Buggy, Kuro and lastly from the SHs aswell however Nami in LA does not steal from any pirate at all, she steal from the marines (the map to the Grand Linei) but then also shockingly trying to steal from Kaya someone very sweet and innocent, why would she steal from her but not pirates? Nami stealing from pirates and not from anyone else exception being the marines is an important part of her character for me with it showing some of her view of morals. 2. Nami said in the LA that knowledge is far more important than treasure but why? She is like Mr Crabs from Spongebob when it comes to money, because Nami love treasure n money, it's her biggest gimmic! She get's Berries in her eyes just the mention or thought of stealing treasure so how come they made Nami not care about the treasure she stole? She should have been excited and obsessed with it as in the show. Nami would never say knowledge in more important than gold, she would value both things but her hunger for treasure is such a huge part of her character that I became disappointed seeing it no loger being the case. 3. Nami have never had any predjudies against rich people and to see Nami being so judgemental of Kaya at first saying rich people this and rich people that is out of character for her. she never acted like that. Nami did not judge Kaya or had problem with rich people so that part rubbed me the wrong way. Otherwise I do like how LA Nami is, Emily Rudd is a great actor and then her in the help me scene was fantastic.
@liyenong20178 ай бұрын
Idk, I kinda wish Emily would have a more cheerful personality like how she appears during her interview, the LA she acts so down serious all the time compared to the anime where she can still act carefree and laughs. I still think the script writer should rethink some of the scripts they wrote, maybe they meant drawing and knowing the world map is more important but they should also never downplay how Nami really loves money after all she likes to spend on herself and enjoy too 😂😂

Even though personally I like that they toned down his cowardice and he made the decision to stay and make sure tire is safe but they should have shown off more of his intelligence and skill. My favorite part about his character in The anime is that he was constantly tinkering with things and messing with stuff on the ship. We see none of that, and the Usopp hammer scene being replaced with a bad dialogue before her shoots a fish man is a major loss.

When the Red Hair pirates are unloading their loot Shanks calls out “careful, that [chest] is worth more than the rest of the treasure combined” and then cuts to Luffy lighting up with pirate excitement. So when he sees the chest he recognizes it as being the valuable one, and opens it. Really enjoyed the show as a weekly reader of the manga. Sure, there were a few things I'd wanted to see, but understand were cut because of budget/time constraints. There were just a few things that felt a little odd to me, mostly some interactions. Like how nonchalantly Sanji joined the crew for example. I remember crewmates joining in the manga being a highlighted thing as most of the future crewmates had clear motivations either not to join or to become a pirate at all. But it was just a "heard you guys needed a cook", *hops on* moment. A minor thing was the little fist pushaways Luffy does with his crew that felt a little awkward to me. And lastly, Luffy feels weaker to me at this point than he did in the manga, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just that Luffy usually only required help because he got stuck in a cage with Buggy or underwater with Arlong, but he'd always beat the boss man alone after. In the live action fights had to be cut and the fights remaining end up being a 1v2 or 1v3 even. It seemed that he wasn't really able to do any damage to Arlong and just had to bury him, while in the manga it was clearly Luffy knocking him out. After this he gets his ass handed to him by Garp, which obviously doesn't happen in the series at this point either. But if I was a first time viewer, I'd be scared for Luffy going to the grand line at his current level which might be a good thing.

The point you made about Baratie was pretty good. I myself have not watched the show, but when I heard that Krieg was cut short, my first thought was "eh, no big loss. In regards to Nojiko having the tattoos, ironically Genzo doesn't wear his signature pinwheel outside of flashbacks. Him wearing the pinwheel represented being able to still make Nami smile, and he didn't take it off until after he entrusted Nami to Luffy at the end of the arc. In the Live Action, since it's missing, it could be representing him having given up on Nami, as the village didn't know about Nami's deal with Arlong.

Even while being familiar with the source material, I enjoyed how the changes they made to Garp added more nuance and depth to the World Government and the layers of secrets that are kept from not only the public eye but also the eyes of most low-ranking Marines. It makes for a good platform to introduce Cipher Pol later on, in my opinion. Idk why it was necessary for Garp to have a Scottish accent though.

Honestly it might be best to conceptualize the differences between the manga/anime and the live action show is that the former is a battle manga and the plot primarily happens through huge spectacle fights, while the latter (due to budget and resources) HAS to be more of a conventional character drama where the plot moves forward via dialogue and interpersonal interactions

The biggest issue I hear most people bring up is Garp's presence. Personally, I don't mind the inclusion of Garp so early. I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan of the change, but on the other hand, it doesn't really change too much being included here instead of at Post Enies Lobby. Also, as for the lack of Hachi here in season one, I think they could always just introduce him at Sabaody later on instead. Without a fight scene in that arc, it would be far less expensive to introduce him there, it's not like he was friends with the Straw Hats before Sabaody anyways, and not having him be with the villains here would make him more sympathetic later. You could even still have him be a former member of the Arlong pirates that Nami recognizes and distrusts at first, maybe do a flashback where he leaves the Arlong Pirates long before Arlong and Luffy ever meet, possibly even out of protest for Arlong's treatment of the humans in Cocoyashi village. Like, set it up so that Hachi is simple minded like the anime/manga, so that despite his past with both Arlong and Jinbe, he sees Arlong's tyranny as being the exact same thing that the humans have been inflicting on humans for their whole lives. So he ends up leaving because his good boy tendencies won't allow him to participate or contribute to that, no matter how loyal he is to Arlong or no how matter what he feels towards humans.

Robin can (and probably will) still be there later on when we get the rest of it and the reason for her importance there. In fact, THAT'S probably gonna be revealed by Garp later on in the same place in the story it originally happened, it's just that Garp's connection to Luffy would have already been brought to light . While the added scenes to Garp,Coby,Helmeppo,Kaya were 'cool'. It did more harm then good overall. It caused Arlong Park episodes to be rushed. Zoro's injured duel to be completely remowed Usopp's all character development were removed and he had become an insignificant background character that has less screentime than Helmeppo or Buggy. As a main crew this is just ridiculus. Overall, while some changes are 'cool'. Believe me they hurt much more than they contribute, because every time you add something, you must cut away some things. Cutting Don Krieg is fine. But cutting all Usopp character moments? Crew interractions that contribute to their growth? That is just hurting the foundation they are building for OPLA.

1) wow, what a great find! i agree, the mystique really adds to it. but back when the straw hat crew was in rogue town and it started with a normal, maybe cloudy day, after buggy getting close to beheading luffy, a massive storm starts, so if people do end up talking about the day they saw a rubber man smile just before getting his head chopped off where the same thing happened to gold roger, some may talk about a bright day, other about clouds forming and others again about the rain, while some will only mention the lightning storm. and since this was only the first time we saw it being depicted in the live action show, i'm looking forward to seeing it told again later on. 2) yeah, i think that was very unlucky, too. i love hachi and the fight was also awesome. you know what was also missing? sanji blowing air into kuurobi's gills and luffy almost drowning with a massive rock stuck to his foot and the sea giant. by now we all know how many things had to be cut for brevity's sake. i think the live action series is made primarily for people who know little or even nothing about one piece and couldnt be bothered to read 1000 chapters or watch hundreds of episodes of the anime but want sth more cinematic and i think they succeeded. they focus on fewer characters, cut the least important ones and the ones too expensive to cgi. honestly it's just smart. fans of the anime have the anime, fans of the manga have the manga. live action would never be able to touch those if it had to be just like them. again, this is very smart. cutting fights is also smart bc they are expensive and difficult to choreograph. i'm generally very kind to all of one piece content bc i mostly used to read it for the story bits, the fights got overly long and convoluted with time for me. so if you ask me, these are all good changes especially for fans much more casual than me. and i aint no casual fan. like, would you want story bits in the middle of the of one piece trading card game? exactly. it wouldnt make any sense. 3) i think it's a bit weird that they cut out most of the absurd eating habits of luffy (which is very shonen main character-like) but still reference it as if they showed it. atst, even in the manga luffy finds the devil's fruit to be digusting, though that doesnt matter as you get the powers with the first bite and dont have gobble up half of it at least or sth. personally, i always preferred luffy's more happy go lucky and outright innocent demeanor of the manga, here he seems a little vengeful, if that's the right word. 4) again, this is 90% smart decision making. the don's weapon-clad armor, poison gas attack and sheer armada of half starved crew fighting the cooks wouldve destroyed the budget. also, fewer guns being shown and used couldve eased the rating, just like the lack of blood after hawk-eye's slash and stab to zoro's chest. gin's arc missing is unfortunate, that really shouldve been added anyway, but hey, we're short on time so whatever. if you want a whole lot of story and action, go watch the anime or read the manga. the live action show is all about cinematic feels and coolness in looks. just look at their clothes alone! already so much more variety and i love usopp's extra time, the actor's sheer charisma is insane, what a wonderful find and perfect fit. oda was overjoyed with luffy's actor, well so was i with usopp's. really, until now every single actor was A to S tier except maybe nami's actress, who just wasnt born with the more wide, massive eyed face of the anime/manga, but that's such a nitpick. what i was missing more of her was her constant smile as seen with luffy and especially what sanji's actor gave to the character. usopp should never be forgotten in such a list either but zoro was always a little more laid back and cool, almost as much as nico robin, so him giving cool smirks is just fine. 4.1) the fish head was some kind of parasitic drone boat with cannons and pedals in the manga, but since the battle doesnt really happen it doesnt matter so the change is acceptable, even if i still do miss it. such a funny little moment! the fishmen appearing was way weirder, though. totally superfluous, no? 5) syrup village invasion was totally out of left field, i'll give you that. i have no clue why they did it, but looking back i thoroughly enjoyed it and honestly the entire lore of this part of the manga just makes so much more sense to me. why would a massive pirate crew wait over 10 years for the captain to become a butler? why would they care about some irrelevant mansion? they arent land lubbers and kuro didnt even eat a devil's fruit, so he CAN actually swim just fine. kaya owning a massive ship yard makes soooo much more sense. the lamb man merry being a financial chief advisor to kaya is also a great addition, since she already had kuro as her main butler and those cat siblings as kitchen staff whilst living otherwise alone. kuro's plan on trying to inherit an entire ship yard and estate as a retirement fund with little to no crew left to speak of makes way more sense rather than having a massive crew waiting for him, a vice captain in charge and only working for a measly villa. one is a shrewd plan, the other is just kinda dumb. in the manga he wouldve been so much smarter to just continue doing his thing. his crew alone wouldve been more than powerful enough to defeat all of what captain morgan couldve thrown at him and then some, resulting in way more loot than that. think about it, they even intended on raiding the entire village, surely not the only one in all those years he spent working as a butler and he never really had a reason to hide either, especially since jacko didnt seem to have any problems either as the new captain. ok, usopp not fighting at all in the live action series wasnt the best change, but at least it shows passively, how much of a coward he is. 6) eh, i'm a bit lukewarm on both the original and the live action version of nami's acceptance in the village. i think it's more of a shame that they didnt show nami's ruse when she was supposed to stab usopp, instead injuring herself. that's a way bigger moment. but then they played up luffy preparing to fight arlong and screaming about, which i thought was a bit out of character. luffy is supposed to be very energetic when he invites or makes people join his crew, he's otherwise mostly goofy, mindless, naive, happy go lucky, adventurous and also a bit brainless, but when it comes to serious moments he goes quiet and stays still for a bit, then does a big move, shouts down his opponent and jumps into a high octane battle. this is his modus operandi. he understands high stakes scenarios better than low stakes ones. when his adrenaline aint flowing, his mind isnt working. it's why he needs some knocks at the start of all battles to come to senses first everytime. he's a typical "slow starter" shounen main character. what i'm saying is that luffy shouldve instead left his hat with her, made her a promise, walked straight to arlong park in silence, beat the fence down and then go ham. he needs his moment to get into fighting mood, he doesnt just fight all the time and he most definitely doesnt immediately go all out or even get all that invested into anything, he's too adhd for such emotions out of the blue. but i will say that i'm pretty unhappy with nojiko and was a bit confused about belle-mere not being a punk. 7) controversial? maybe. but damn was garp played well. kinda overstayed his welcome and stuck his nose where it doesnt belong in the very end, but i think we wouldve just missed out of this awesome actor. only thing he was lacking was the big dog head on his ship. look at his it in the manga, though, it was absolutely massive and had tons of cannons. i think they didnt necessarily played him down here, they just grounded everything more in reality in general, which in the end is a big plus for mainstream appeal, bc let's be real, one piece is one weird little story.

I liked the Garp change, it kinda played back to young Luffy Garp. I think in later seasons we'll see the Garp we know and love. Most controversial change to me though was Zoro, he lacked emotion. His best emotional scene was his Defeat and he didn't even cry. Plus we're used to seeing him joke a little and even his angry shark teeth yelling scenes. Now I don't remember how many of those were in the chapters preceding Loguetown, but there had to be some. Zoro is my least favorite character in the live action. Also, I thought it was brilliant how they did Don Krieg! The Mihawk Scene was amazing! They were even faithful to the anime with the ship slicing. I think they just decided Don Krieg wouldn't and couldn't escape from Mihawk, so he finished them off in their first encounter. Which makes sense. And you forget all the momenta Luffy impressed Sanji, either by words, or his character, and Sanji cracked a smile. I think they did a good job of showing why Sanji liked Luffy. Edit, oh yeah, I swear the 3 times they call Luffy Chore boy, I went back and listened to the over and over and I think it was the second or maybe first, they actually said Joy Boy. I feel like it's an Easter Egg.

i think garp has a character change i can’t ignore. anime garp is shown to care about lufy but isn’t really willing to go out of his ways to find him. garp only visits him if he happens to sail close by. in the show He cares greatly about Lufy. the instant he even suspects it could be Lufy he goes out of his way to hunt him down relentlessly to try and talk him out of his dream.

They never needed to show Gol's death because at the end of the day, if you had gotten far enough in the story, you already knew he was a dead man, but also the most accomplished one could hope to be in what he was doing. He had done it, he got to the end and saw everything and instead of grandstanding and declaring dominance, he humbled himself and smiled in the face of death and GAVE HOPE TO THE NEW GENERATIONS, THE ONE PIECE IS REAL~~!

For me its coco yashi village. When genzo and nojiko understand and tell nami they always knew its a very important moment. I think if they took the ending with Garp and many scenes with Coby they could've focus on the crew stories, baratie fight and arlong park expecially

Didnt like the Garp change at first but its grown on me, mainly due to adding the Koby and Helmeppo origin plus they can do the actual training from the chapter covers in the next season if needed. Also thinking about it that scene in Water 7 can still remain mostly the same (he doesnt want to chase but is ordered to, etc) but instead of 2 bombshells he drops the one about Dragon so that can still throw the entire crew off guard. Very curious to see how they deal with Season 2, especially with their aversion of big setpieces (so Alabasta...) due to time and budget contraints....

It is these changes that, I feel, make the emotional scenes fall flat. Like you mentioned Baratie and why Sanji joins the crew. But, as I keep bringing backup is the Zoro bar scene. You stated it in one video, but Zoro comes off as a bully. In the anime/manga, the simple act of Zoro eating the dirty rice ball shows his heart. Something that isn't easily noticed. Zoro is a very Stotic character, but that scene shows that our Stotic swordsman has a heart and cares, which impacts other scenes later on in the series. Like when the crew is leaving water 7. Let me state again, I liked the live-action series, as a stand-alone series. It is good. But there are problem points that need to be addressed if the series wants to be successful in further seasons. Which I want it to be successful.

Several points were made about scenes being cut that otherwise could have helped to develop our protags. Limiting Garp's screen time to something similar to the manga cover stories would have done that. One of the biggest knocks against live action Cowboy Bebop was the creative changes. Knowing One Piece is being made by the same studio and knowing Oda pushed back on this Garp change, it makes me wonder if they still have some lessons to learn.
@friendlyotaku9525 Жыл бұрын
Oda didn't "push back" but he did have to be convinced which he eventually was. I think it makes sense honestly and I do like the added Marine Presence which wasn't there much in early One Piece.

I mean... If that were the case, we'd have about 10 minutes of Garp, across the entire 8 episode series, and it would have been absolutely jarring and rushed, but OK~
@nunnayorz5836 Жыл бұрын
@@weebjeez It was jarring to constantly cut from Strawhat action to grumpy Garp. The scenes of him being angry that he couldn't catch Luffy didn't advance the story. Limiting Garp's screen time to give more time to the main story and characters wouldn't have been a bad thing. We could still have Garp meet Coby and Helmeppo and start training under him, just without all of the pointless tantrums.
@weebjeez Жыл бұрын
@@nunnayorz5836 Not every scene needs to advance the plot. That is how you end up with a story that seems rushed. The Garp stories, from a filmmaking perspective, are there to give the audience a break in the action. something of a "and now, something completely different" a la Monty Python. When you are telling a long story, like OP, you can do that without cutting away. Because you have the luxury of TIME. But not in something so short as the OP Live Action. It would feel jarring to have these characters go through so much, in such a short period of time. Even IF they got the whole runtime, it simply wouldn't have been enough.
@nunnayorz5836 Жыл бұрын
@weebjeez You can cut away from action without stalling the story. There's plenty of existing material to expand on without the need to write in a season long B plot for Garp. If the intent was to break from the action, Garp's energy was too intense for that. He was constantly angry, and at one point destroyed his office because Mihawk refused to be his errand boy and bring in Luffy. Not only did that do nothing for the story, it didnt help Garp's character. He looked incompetent. I agree with you that the story is dense and there's limited time to tell it in this live action format. That's why I found it a confusing choice to constantly cut from the main story where we were learning about our new crew and their backgrounds, and seeing their adventures over to a guy being angry in his office for most of 8 episodes, just to finally catch up with Luffy and do what? More nothing. GARP: "Luffy stop making trouble out here!" LUFFY: "No! I'm gonna be a pirate!" GARP: "I thought I trained you to be a marine!" LUFFY: "I don't care I'm gonna be a pirate!" GARP: "Hmm.. ok. Hahaha." Nothing happened, but not in the cool way with Zoro in Thriller Bark. The scene meant nothing because even though it was the climax of that plot, new viewers could guess that Luffy would continue his adventure. I swear I like One Piece, but this whole subplot just says bad writing to me. Like the same people who came up with grumpy Garp probably also thought that in Cowboy Bebop it was a good idea to give Jet a daughter just to traumatize her in the final episode. I've never written for a TV show though, so just my personal opinion.
@williamsimkulet7832 Жыл бұрын
What's done is done, but I think there are a few ways to do Garp where he doesn't come across as feckless and incompetent. To it's credit, I somewhat like the idea that Garp is the one who is cleaning up the messes Luffy causes. Koby and Helmeppo get more screen time and more to do, and it kind of works. But Garp's not fun or imposing, and this whole "testing" premise seems halfassed and lazy. Adapting the Ax-Hand stuff more faithfully would have helped out a lot, and it'd be fun to see him clean up Kuro and especially Nezumi. Having him be ordered to catch the Strawhats would have been a nice touch, especially as he could have made some "lazy" decisions along the way. For example think of the scene with Zeff where Koby and Helmeppo give him the information; rather than interrogate Zeff poorly and seem to give into Zeff's bribe, he could have taken Zeff up on the offer of a meal, but insisted he pay (presumably while Koby is away so Koby's not sure whether Garp's dirty or not), and the scene could be more playful, only for Garp to somewhat reluctantly follow up on Koby's tip. In this revised version, Garp shows himself to be just and caring when he deals with Ax-Hand and maybe Kuro. We should also see him help rebuild some things, showing his strength (practically) and setting up the idea he might train Koby and Helmeppo. This can be contrasted with his lack of focus and/or ambition to hunt Luffy when ordered by Sengoku; and Koby can begin to doubt Garp, and thus the navy, when he learns Luffy is his grandson, fearing Garp is playing favorites. However, of course, Luffy doesn't really do any pirate-type stuff, so it's reasonable for Garp to prioritize the Fishmen and Nezumi's corruption over capturing his grandson. Orders are orders, but one needs to be true to their own sense of justice, he might say. Garp doesn't want to bring in Luffy, but if he can preoccupy himself rounding up the bad guys Luffy beats up, he doesn't have to make that choice. (Would Garp bring in his grandson? Well, given what happened with Ace... maybe.) Having Garp as Roger's execution also felt super wrong, by the by.

Another change with Ussop I felt was lacking was in his fight with Choo we don't see him contemplating quitting the fight and trying to come up with excuses before overcoming his fear. That was a missed opportunity to show what Ussop's character is about.

That's because LA Usopp comes across more lazy than a coward trying to overcome his fear. To me, he is the strawhat character that's the least like his anime counterpart.

It’s important to remember that Garp was more serious in the past with Luffy trying to get him to become a marine and eventually become more chill and carefree while still showing some tough love during Luffy’s journey. I feel like the Live Action approach to Garp was one of my favorite in the show as it shows how different a family member would act suited up in their uniform and representing their job rather than just hanging out which is why we have a more serious Garp and it also shows the journey of why Garp accepts Luffy’s path as a pirate in the anime. Throughout the show Garp is testing Luffy and Coby to see if they are prepared for their paths while showcasing the morals present in his character and once Garp interacts more with Luffy he shows more of his well known expressive personality but keeping a bit more toned down than usual like with the anime/manga. I feel like Garp’s portrayal in the show is a more realistic way of showing Garp as a vice admiral position but still maintaining the morals and personality of Garp from the original material

Honestly i would have preferred a super, upgraded anime with modern animated reboot of one piece rather than live action. Just shows how limiting reality is to a writer's imagination. It could have been better if they shifted the story away from strawhats and maybe the the past of Roger's. Maybe then our expectations would be way lower. I prefer a masterpiece with enough time and money for development instead of a diy half-baked product. Oda has spent decades giving proper devlopment to each character, even the side characters are significant. The live action not showing this with major characters, really disappoints me further. I dont see this series continue past little garden. Arabasta seems like a nightmare for them to recreate, if they cant even include these small character devlopments.

@7thlittleleopard7 Жыл бұрын
@@endlessnoodle3056 Yes. It was. I really enjoyed the Marine side of things and entwining not only Garp but also Coby and Helmeppo's story with the main plot of East Blue was a great way to show their active development into formalising and chasing their dreams, becoming friends and forming their own ideals within the corrupt structure of the Marines. The mirroring of Luffy and Coby's journey was a great addition and seeing how he struggled to come to terms with what it meant to be a Marine in a world that is not black and white was pretty compelling. Besides, it never made sense to me once we knew who Garp was as a person, that he was in East Blue when Luffy left and never chased him down. I always figured afterwards that the whole reason he was even nearby to collect Morgan was because he was/had headed home to collect Luffy for a surprise birthday induction into the Marines, so this really plays into my headcanon that hey, he was there to grab the lad and drag him kicking and screaming to Head Quarters. The biggest problem with garp in the live action is the diservice to Smoker. How is he(captain smokey) going to be seen as compentant without him being greater then garp as a threat? They should've at least switched the two characters. It could've/should've been a great moment of father and son fighting over grand(son)'s future. That would've been truly epic. I think the true is they got scared they weren't going to get more seasons. So they wrapped everything up in a nice one season package; failing to realize the bike they built for our Christmas morning surprise is missing its wheels. Yeah it's great but ultimately not complete.

Episode 1, Shells Town arc: - Zoro suffering several days crucified is turned into a 2 minutes gag - the scene where the Zoro eats the food the little girl prepared for is less impactful because it happens into a fucking bar and loses all of its meaning - Zoro getting his swords back by himself instead of Luffy bringing them back to him. That scene is where the bond of trust between the captain and the vice-captain truly starts - Captain Morgan doesn't feel tyrannical at all and it can be confusing showing him getting arrested in episode 2 and saying that he is corrupted when you don't show that part of his character. - The other marines are mocked the entire time meanwhile in the manga they are all relieved that Morgan was defeated, they accept Koby with them, they let Luffy and Zoro leave the island without telling anyone what happened. In the live action Koby punches Helmeppo Syrup Village arc: - The series doesn't make clear that Kuro wants Kaya's fortune to stop being a pirate and also the fact that he is willing to betray his crewmates if necessary to his plans. - Zoro is inside of a hole trying to get out and having a random flashback about his childhood for almost the enitrety of the arc, was that really necessary?
