It's the winter tyres that make the difference between safe and unsafe. Thanks for sharing.
@number84853 жыл бұрын
Winter tyres certainly help but complete safety in snow and ice can never be guaranteed. Extending the two second rule up to 10 seconds may help with thinking and braking distances using engine braking and/or very light cadence braking. ABS won't necessarily deploy any braking improvement but might help control a skid if it's possible to steer into it. It is worth checking the handbook about your ABS and what to do in an emergency...In most situations it helps with the steering by keeping the brake pedal depressed and letting the ABS do its job.Try to avoid gradients and keep going in second gear to reduce unnecessary friction. Front wheel drive works better that rear and 4x4 is preferable to both.Back in the early 70's I kept my stage 2 Mini Cooper going over Exmoor in around 6 inches of fresh snow from near Exford and eventually reached my destination, Barnstaple, several hours later via Bridgewater, the M5,Exeter and the A377 which I knew well and to be relatively flat. My family were pleased to see me.. No mobile 'phones in those days and any form of rescue was out of the question. Certainly an interesting drive including a several second spell in thick smoke enveloping the 377 in the Crediton area supplied by some thoughtful gardener burning leaves! The Cooper handled brilliantly and I had to stop once or twice to bash ice away from the wheel arches to prevent tyre and brake contact. Also the roof to prevent sizable slabs falling onto either the road or somewhere else. It was a strange feeling shuffling along after Exeter and not a soul in sight and not knowing whether the snow would ever let up and whether the fuel would hold out. I was pleased that I had only recently waterproofed the distributer and replaced the battery. Paddy Hopkirk put the Coopers on the map back in the sixties by winning the Monte Carlo Rallye I think more than once which reinforced my belief that the car would get me home. Fortunately I always keep basic kit and water on board for these situations plus warm clothing and some sort of food. I now drive a Land Rover Freelander 2 which loves the snow but never changes my perception of how uncomfortable things can suddenly get if you are unprepared and don't know what you are doing.

Good winter tyres and a bit of common sense are generally all you need to be safe in these conditions. Always wise to carry a few cold weather provisions as well. Great to see the wally in the black Audi at the beginning driving too fast with no lights on. Some people really need a little accident to shock them into thinking a bit more. There are still a large portion of drivers who are winter tyre sceptics but if you gave them a taste of what a difference they actually make, i'm sure they'd quickly change their viewpoint.

To me, it's common sense to have winter tires on but you have so much of a mixture of weather in the UK that catches people out, thanks Scot for commenting and watching. Have a great New Year.

It can be properly snowy there. Five winters ago I was overtaken by two German cars on the fast moorland stretch from Alston to Hartside summit in very poor icy conditions with just three inches of snow. Ten minutes later I found each of them with their car bonnets buried deep in 8 foot high piled snow banks at the nasty 180 degree corners on the way down to Penrith that you show in this video. Both said they couldn't stop. Each did thousands in damage to their cars.
@EdenValleyAdventuresUK3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that corner can catch people out if you drive too fast and trying to be clever with your mate's. Thank you Pesmog.
@number84853 жыл бұрын
Lucky they didn’t kill themselves or worse someone else.One of the problems with driving in Germany is that there are no speed limits on autobhans and this might reflect reckless driving elsewhere especially in wintery conditions which some drivers think they know all about.

You have obviously got good experience in travelling in these sort of conditions and stopping to help the people in the white vehicle you are a star. It's good that you are stocked up on food, hot flask of coffee and most important warm clothes for the Winter climate. Stay Safe. Buddy. I will never criticise anyone who are willing to help others.

The road he drives is back of my old. house never go on it with out extra warm clothes sleeping bag lots chocolate in the boot if possible a small camping stove. Just in case you get stuck Cumbria is placed to go out to the shop in winter with out your car prepared ! You see London people buy house. Moving in winter you see them smashed there cars. They last 2 winter. Before there dreams of life in Cumbria is not there ideas of wot they bought in to the road in question is the one worse in the area the cold s exposed but love to move back if I could afford to do so live on top.

That was probably one of the local jobbies that had to overtake you. Most of us know to absolutely avoid Hartside if there's the slightest possibility that it might snow. We certainly wouldn't rush it. I suppose, if it does take you by surprise, the best thing IS to keep going but go very, very slowly. Try to turn around - easy to get stuck. It's better to be pointing down hill and trundle along any existing tire tracks there might be.
