I'm glad everything worked out in the end Keith. I'd like to suggest that you plant a bunch of pecan trees. They are nice looking and the nuts are tasty. Isolated oak trees are always in peril. If you replant oaks, plant several in a grove and leave room for them to develop to full sized canopies. They shelter each other from high winds.

I live on an acreage as well and have a wood chipper for my tractor. A wood chipper allows you to get the brush reduced, but it is a a lot of hard work. I have done my share of burn piles as well. I always cut a fire break around the pile and give the surrounding area a good soaking before lighting it up. Anymore I just move all the brush to the far corner of my property and let it decompose on its own.

Tip from a property owner in California, where everything is regulated or illegal and burn permits are rare and expensive! JUST DO IT! Do it on a weekend or on Friday (because most Govt workers go home early on Friday) Just let your neighbors know so they don't think there is a house fire. Also, I have always found it to be good practice to "windrow" the pile so it does not make too big of a flame. Light the down wind end and the fire will move more slowly thru the row. It will all be over with before the Govt workers can close the KZbin video on their work computer!
@jusb10667 жыл бұрын
burn it, come monday, if anyone asks, say what burn pile? that scorch mark is from lightning
@johnferguson72357 жыл бұрын
Your neighbors can take videos and report you to the authorities or they might call the fire department. The fines for illegal/unpermitted burning are very large here in California. If you accidentally start a brush fire, you could end up owing the government millions of dollars in restitution costs; and they will go after you to collect. Here in the Central Coast area everything goes through a chipper.
@jusb10667 жыл бұрын
ahh a simple thing to do then, give a kid in a hoodie 5 bucks to light it while you drive into town
@marvincarvin18467 жыл бұрын
John, ah, err, err. I can testify first hand that not everything goes thru a chipper here on the Central Coast. Maybe in town it does, but fortunately, SLO county is still mostly rural, where your neighbors are. well, neighbors in the traditional sense. Just because a person does not think they need a permit does not mean that they are clueless & careless and will start a brush fire. That is the problem with bureaucrats and their obsession to regulate EVERYTHING.
@johnferguson72357 жыл бұрын
You would turn a misdemeanor into a felony conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. I guarantee that the Fire Marshall and the police will pursue prosecution. That kid would rat you out in a second and you would be facing charges. That will get you fired by your employer.

so many storms here this is weekly maintenance these days. you really don't need to burn tree branches like this small pile because by 1 1/2 years it's dried/shrunk down so much you'll be able to drive a skidloader over it and turn it to dust. but there'll be more trees blowing down non stop.

I enforce open burning in my county (in East Tennessee) and something like that you would have to get inspected first before burning. I wish all of ours looked as good as yours, I would issue the permit no problem. However, you have to check every day you are going to burn to see of the atmospheric conditions are acceptable here, just like you do there. Our process is just a little different, sounds like.
@VintageMachinery7 жыл бұрын
All you have to do is either call or go on-line and enter some info to get a permit here in Georgia. As for the "atmospheric conditions", it's just frustrating that the conditions seem to rarely be OK in my county but the county that is 200 yards from my burn pile, they are just fine. I think that it has to do with the fact that I-75 runs down the center of my county and they have had problems with smoke settling over the interstate and causing driving hazards. Of course, my pile is 15 miles from the interstate so it would never cause a problem that far away. In the past, when I have troubles getting a permit, I can usually call the local Forestry Unit and talk to the County Forester. When I tell him where I live, they usually let me have one anyway.
@AustrianAnarchy7 жыл бұрын
Here you can call and have a permit mailed to you, or you can go online and have it emailed back usually the same day. But that is for regular brush with nothing over 3" in diameter, in a pile about the size of a pickup truck load. For yours, they would have us go out and look to see if you qualified for an agricultural permit, which any of us would issue no problem for what you have. I am sure the atmospheric conditions issue changes county by county here too, I just know mine.

Actually Captain .. its more to STOP people from burning under conditions that will touch off a brush fire. Embers travel through the air and can land in areas quite a way from the source touching off a brush fire. The problem is fire departments cant rely on people to think /. know what the right burn conditions are and or care.
@jake2213b7 жыл бұрын
Their is a way around the permit. Get some hot dogs build a campfire (NO BONFIRES) and cook and have a good time. But let the local fire district know. That what I do because 3/4 of the rear is no burning. I will not burn if it is windy or very dry. I do put a a steel ring and burn in it.

"burn permit"? So much for living in a free country.
@infoanorexic7 жыл бұрын
Some areas, there is very good reason for it. But it usually comes about because one person lit a pile and didn't tend it to keep it in control. As is often the case, one person caused restrictions on everyone. The bureaucrat solution comes into play, akin to going after a wasp in the room with a sledgehammer.
@goldenhazeduster7 жыл бұрын
diggerop you're spot on except for there being a "good" reason for it.
@infoanorexic7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, most of the reasons for such restrictions coming about are not "good." It does seem like some areas draw more that their fair share of those that want "freedom" without responsibility or concern with how it could affect others. The permitting requirement does force communication. If the smoke from such a burn were to make things difficult for the neighbor half a mile downwind because it would trigger breathing problems, better to hold off rather than cause someone a trip to the emergency room. You might not be aware of your neighbors difficulty, but if it's that serious, it's quite likely the local emergency responders are. So, no permit now, but when the wind changes, yes.
@VintageMachinery7 жыл бұрын
Burn permits do two things - first the keep people from burning when they don't need to. We have certain times of the year where it is too dry to burn and doing so can cause huge forest fires - like the one they just put out down on the GA/FL border. Also, it tells the Forestry Commission where there is a burn going on so that they are not sending out fire trucks to put out a permitted burn.
@goldenhazeduster7 жыл бұрын
The permit does neither of those things. Responsible people are to be credited with those things. Where I live we do not need a permit. That does not stop me from calling central dispatch (aka 911 center) and letting them know where I am and that I am setting a brush pile on fire so that when the fire department responds that they do not run over someone trying to get here in a hurry. We also have recommendations posted by the fire department on when to burn. They are from one to five and change daily due to weather. There are other ways to minimize problems besides infringing on freedom. A permit is what the government gives you in return for taking one of your rights.
