My thoughts exactly...I live in the north east and the devestation in our countryside has been horrendous. I don't own a TV so don't know what coverage was given to the North weeks ago when we suffered. Also.wish they'd stop giving them colour codes. Yes I think all modern vehicles automatically apply the hazards under hard braking or an extreme angle. Passive safety sensors that work alongside the airbag sensors trigger them. Hope them guys make a full recovery.

You got that right. I'm self employed and I live in the countryside. I went to work yesterday morning and by 11am the power was off. Bit too windy to ride the bike back home so I sat and waited, but by 4pm still no power. Then I find the motorbike has been blown over in the wind and smashed all the bits and bobs down one side. That’s nowhere near a hurricane. Hurricanes are sustained extreme powerful wind (regular storms like this one have powerful wind GUSTS not sustained. If it were sustained it would’ve destroyed a significant amount of old buildings) then halfway through, when the eye passes, the wind comes from the other direction which is why it destroys so much. People without experience reinforce one side of their structure, neglecting the other, then when the second half of the storm hits it destroys it and can easily kill you. You can walk through storms like this one if you walk through a hurricane you’ll likely die. Another thing is the low air pressure wreaks havoc and makes your head feel weird until the storm passes. Edit: if a hurricane hit England it’d devastate that country as bad as earthquakes devastate Haiti or any country with buildings not built to withstand it. Thankfully a hurricane will never hit England bc the waters aren’t warm enough.

It happens in the Caribbean every year. A friend of the family has a boat down there and each year it had to be sailed across the Atlantic so it would not get smashed up. No one would insure it in situ. Now they have better facilities though so it stays there all year.

As silly as it sounds the winds need to be within a set parameter. The limit of generation is roughly 31mph. After that, they can’t produce more than their maximum. After a certain point, roughly 55mph, turbine has to shut down. At the end of the day wind turbines are also structures, and can, rather ironically, be damaged by the very force of nature they aim to utilise.

My friend had her house damaged,the wall under window ca Ed in and she was close to the window she was lucky,and all the other windows in her house went through that was one mean storm. I saw our neighbour attempting to drive in that crazy storm,he hadn’t even got as far as the drive and reversed back to safety wasn’t taking no chances. My poor aunt had a powercut down at her house in Wadhurst. She had no electricity for 24 hours! Luckily, her oven runs on gas so was able to warm herself up and still cook. Even though we had no powercut here in Woodbridge, luckily, my mum's beloved jasmine post and angel statue got broken by the storm, which upset her greatly. Curse you, Storm Eunice! Even though we're deeply lucky to have no hurricanes, tornadoes and tsunamis, I think there's a possibility that Earth may soon start to see a difference in how we save energy and how we recycle. But more importantly, we would be more concerned in how much damage these storms we've been having are doing to our climate - most vital, the trees. The trees are the reason we survive as the leaves carry out photosynthesis, which provides us with oxygen to breathe. However, it's very unlikely that all trees will be torn down by storms because a lot of them have strong trunks and are rooted deeply into the ground.

@@jbin2424 no, what I mean is that we, as in the people in the county that I live in, get weather like this every week or so. Especially at this time of year, and towards the end of the year too. The summer months are slightly more relaxed but still miserable, lots of rain and wind, maybe 3 days of actual summer others would consider "normal." We still had power cuts and trees ripped up at their roots, and flood water blocking main access roads. Just like we do many times a year. Every year. It's part of living in the North, we're used to it. I personally live over 50 miles from the coast so I don't see the sea regularly, but I've seen plenty of very aggressive and dangerous waves over on the east coast around Scarborough and Filey way, and on the opposite side in Blackpool too, very normal. Presumably you just haven't lived on this planet for very long to understand that this isn't newsworthy.

You have a few snowflakes, they cancel all the flights, you have a temperature of 25 degrees, they call it a heat wave.

I don't know about unprepared, but rather that extreme weather doesn't happen to us as other places. The last time we had a storm of this magnitude was 30 years ago. I don't know how do you prepare for something that comes once in a generation. We had the "Beast from the East" back in 2018 but the last time I saw it that bad was 1991. Do we prepare for something that may revisit us in 2047?

But on the other hand, extremely mild weather really affected the quality of roads in UK, as well as houses. When I moved here, very soon, my husband and I bought a brand new apartment in good neighborhood. I was expecting top quality. Week after we moved in, the walls started to crack. I was in state of shock and panic, as I believed that apartment is falling apart. We called a builder and he said it’s normal, nothing to be concerned about and it’s just a “settling crack”, never heard of settling crack before as back home, you might get a crack after 50 years. I checked later if settling cracks are really a thing here, turned out they were. Roads are another part of problems, most of them don’t have any shield to block the noise, or to block trees, rocks, part of the heel to fall on the roads, cars, etc, no need to mention that they need to get fixed way too soon. If British people have better quality buildings and better done roads, this kind of weather wouldn’t be such a catastrophic. I believe that British people do deserve a better quality and should definitely push that to happen. After all, with Brexit and Covid, we still have no idea on economic impact for the future, and if before it wasn’t a problem to have a house of poor quality that needs to be fixed often, we might need this quality now, as many people might not be able to afford fixing something that wasn’t meant to last long

I live in watford and the wind knocked over my fence. ohh well Ill be honest the cases reported here aren't even major deals. 2 tree's fell, 1 roof got torn off, the tip of a church got blown off, and some power lines snapped. The tree's were both in urbanized area's where there was alot of concrete around so they couldn't spread there roots as easiliy in those directions making them less stable. Causing there fellin. The tip of the church had been there for probably over 100 year's and i doubt it was inspected much or reinforced at all in that time wood wear's away with time it degraded and was pulled off. the roof of the boat house is new, which means they either didn't account for wind being that strong in the construction or the construction was faulty. the powerlines snapping is a bad thing and really shouldn't happen but they will probably fix them in a few days so buck up and deal with it.

Doing that for every tree that poses a risk raises three issues: 1) the money and time required is too high for how little it would help throughout the year. I still think it should be done, but good job trying to convince the companies if it doesnt give them more money 2) People like their trees, there would likely be backlash by homeowners associations and local governments to maintian their view or something similar 3) This storm is a uniquely strong one, while they will be getting worse overall as time goes on, people wont want to lose it simply because of one particularly bad storm
