Hi Glyn, 5.00am in the morning here in West Australia.I always enjoy your videos, but I am glad i am not chasing sheep or cattle in bad weather anymore. I remember 1986 it was a terrible year of rain 1985 was bad as well. The eighty's were very bad for farming, sky high interest rates, by the middle of the eighty's banks were trying to sell out farmers all over Ireland. It was around that time I gave farming, and headed for Australia. Funny though I still think it's hard to beat a good Irish summer's day, but it's a pity they're as scarce as rocking horse poo. My regards to your father, he's a true battler.
@sheepshepherd11 ай бұрын
Cheers Eamon . You are up early. What's the weather like? You are right you cannot beat an Irish summers day but they are like gold to comeby, Jesus I'd say there was tough times in the 80s . You were dead right to head down under.
@vwvw411 ай бұрын
Lucky the storm didn't come during lambing. I typically lambed in May, when the weather's fair. One year the neighbor snagged the ram's fence with his harrows, while I was on holiday and all my ewes were bred end of August, so I was lambing in -35 weather, with -45 wind chill, January and into February! It was quite the struggle, but I was amazed how well bedded down lambs could survive in an unheated quonset, once they were warmed up and dried off. I had 22 lambs in the house on the coldest day! It's interesting hearing your Dad's memories of the good years and bad years. Would like to see your house being built, maybe you could show video of the blueprints. If your Dad were to carve an extra hurley or two I'd be interested in purchasing one.
@sheepshepherd11 ай бұрын
Ya I'll show the blueprints in the next video👍 Jesus that's crazy -45. What breed of sheep were they, must be very tough? We might lamb a few days later now aswell, as we got very bad weather last lambing

IdF lambs are really vigorous, I swear they'll try to latch a teat before their hind legs are out of the ewe! At least the genetics I was fortunate to have access to. Rideau's are prolific, typically they have 4 to 6 lambs. Subcu 5% dextrose and a hotbox will save every chilled lamb for you, if you get bad weather. I never lambed the numbers you have, my largest flock was 200, so much easier to manage on my own.

Hi Glyn; great to see you and the father, again, I love the videos, brilliant. As regards the ewes at tupping, we here in the Hebrides generally just take them off the hills and moor, just before tupping, and put the rams with them. Folk here who are on better Grazings, around villages, have them in better grass most, or all, of the time so don't flush, as it were. They would just put them on clean parks on the day. There's plenty twins, though, and some guys even have triplets. Across on the mainland, in Caithness I was told, there is some deficiency despite it being beautifully grassy. What I've heard they do there is ; they blood test a handful of sheep and then get the trace element drench to suit. Perhaps an idea? Sally is very èasgaidh (willing); a great help. Where did you get her, if you don't mind me asking? My mate taught me to train to trials standard, 30 years since he started me. He taught me to put sides, stop, walk on, outrun etc on dogs without them having to look at you for direction. I bought at the time Glyn Jones' book, "a way of life" and his three videos. The first two videos would be a great help to you: "come bye and away", and no2: "that'll do". I also have Aled Owen's dvd and Julie Hill's one. I think they would be a help to you. I would like Sally, myself, as she is so willing. Great videos. Gum beannaicheadh Dia sibh👍

@sheepshepherd11 ай бұрын
Ya it's very expensive and you still have issue. And you still must footbath so you need to weight it all up

@@sheepshepherd if you still need to footbath then its not worth the expense. Probably just foot bath once a month and see how it goes.

How much rain do you get in inches in you area? I’ve moved off the hill into town and get half the rainfall. It’s getting to be a distant memory of constant (might be a slight exaggeration) rain but it’s called the Lake District for a reason 🤷♂️

I just put the rams out on the 24th of October and hope for the best. Don't use teasers no. As my lambing is busy enough, and if I have bad weather spell, I won't have enough room to house them all. Is that what you do in Australia?
