Ushant, at the tip of Brittany, is Cape Horn of Europe. The area of storms, crazy currents. The confluence of the ocean, the Atlantic, and a sea, the Channel, in which he comes to choke.
It is also the busiest sea route in the world: every day, 150 ships, 750,000 tons of oil circulate off the island.
We wanted to understand why, since twenty years since the sinking of the Amoco Cadiz, no major ecological and human catastrophe has occurred again. Because it is not the result of chance. For once, we organized ourselves. For once, a policy was decided and renewed. For once, men of various backgrounds (civilians, military, sailors, land) joined their skills.
The pivot of the system is a tug, The Bee Flanders, one of the most powerful in the world, capable of towing a tanker of 550,000 tons in load. If he had been there, if he had been chartered as he is today for a public service mission, the Amoco would never have sullied 200 kilometers of coastline. -

This is such a beautiful documentary. Gosh, the slow-paced contemplative feeling it gives me. Incredible! The narrator's words sunk into me like I was reading some wistful novel from a far away time and place. And that brief interlude of gentle French folk music about 1/3 of the way through was downright romantic! 😌 I feel such a new found admiration for people who work at sea. They are tough and noble. I respect them immensely! I know it sucks that there aren't any subtitles for the spoken French...but in a way it almost doesn't even matter. I felt so immersed by these scenes that it didn't seem to bother me. The mystery of what they were saying made me feel like I was really there. Like a fly on the wall: aloof and naive to the drama unfolding around me. Excellent video. Thank you for uploading!

@Spikey Scenes The sat phone would be useful for serious long-distance cruising but otherwise a bit of an expensive luxury. It all comes down to what sort of cruising you intend.. The best preparation is to not sail outside of your comfort zone. Gaining experience that will enable you to sail into more challenging environments is priceless and can be easily obtained by crewing for other more experienced sailors. Avoiding trouble is always a better bet than struggling to survive it. In the part of the world covered in this video, I would always make for Camaret when heading south unless I was absolutely sure of a clear run through northern Biscay. I would rather wait 48 hrs, enjoying the seafood restaurants than find myself struggling to stay off a lee-shore. The type and condition of the boat would also have to be factored in together with the crew.

Not being fluent in French I was unable to follow the dialogue. I've no idea what the communications were between either the coastguard or any salvage vessels. Or indeed, if a vessel had strayed out of the shipping lanes.
@medea27
@medea27 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrfender5001 My French is very limited but I believe there were strict shipping lanes enforced in this area after a tragedy a few years prior. Like 'left & right' lanes on a road, but the currents & weather in this location make it treacherous for ships to disobey those rules... so not only did this captain risk running into oncoming traffic, but he nearly ran aground & deliberately ignored directions from both the 'sea traffic controllers' _and_ the rescue tug captain. It wasn't 'advice'... he endangered everyone by ignoring the rules & the authorities. And like a driver who doesn't follow road rules, he gets hit with a significant fine.

It would have been much better if I were able to understand the French speaking crewmembers in the video. I don't doubt that it's impossible for a mere video to depict and describe the incredible immensity and power of the sea when it is at it's most furious and tempestuous. I imagine it is a very humbling and spiritual experience. If it doesn't put the fear of God in a man, then he is beyond reason and understanding. I've surfed 10 foot waves on a 8 foot surfboard that looked like apartment buildings coming up on me. I can't event imagine what it must feel like to be on a mighty 100 plus foot steel vessel dwarfed by 50, 60, 80 foot seas and winds beyond description. I salute to all those who brave the might seas to bring us all the goods and products we rely on daily to survive. Good video other than the lack of subtitles or translation.

Great documentary & the narrator definitely has a way with emotive prose... but such a shame that there are no subtitles for the interviews as they form such a crucial part of the narrative. I'd love to know what these experienced sailors have to say but it's impossible to glean anything even with limited French skills... and KZbin's captions/translation system only translates from English to other languages, not the other way around. Fingers crossed the captions might be sophisticated enough in a few years to watch this video again & get the French translated to English!

Ayyy great advice! Except I'm taking shots of vodka, or vodker as the Brits would say And speaking of the English, why didn't they hire a translator or provide subtitles?? Don't get it twisted, I'm French Canadian and I can speak French; in fact, in my last year of classes, which was my 6th year (kindergarten, first grade and second grade, and subsequently 8th, 9th, and 10th grades...I'm 35 now), my teacher believed that I must have lived in Canada or France cause of my prowess. I think honestly that the last time I actually spoke to someone en français was in jail about 15 years ago. That being said, I can still speak it but to hear and understand it is quite difficult. And like half of this is in French!! What were the directors/producers thinking?? Je ne sais plus de le langue d'amour!! Now they're singing...damn it, documentary producers!! I could've done been learnded good but y'all done maked a american feel like I is stoopit. Das bad. Utoob sposta mek me be more smarter but it ain't done did that!! To paraphrase, c'mon man...bless a fool with some translations! Dayumn I apologize...I am kinda drunk

Incredible vid, however, it is hosted on an English site, in English, and all of the interviews were all in French. The chef and others are interviewed as well as the cutaways that watch the crew are all in French... I haven't changed any settings but I don't think I should have to, if it is going to be an English documentary, the interviews and cutaways should either be dubbed or have hardcoded subs. Bitch and moan... It's still an incredible vid to watch!!
