Most of my town were without power, but Scottish Power arranged a free food truck in the pub car park to ensure that those affected could at least access hot food and drinks quickly. It is not often that utility services deserve praise, but fair play to Scottish Power for finding a fast way of making the situation a little more comfortable until repairs could be made.

I am impressed by the resiliance in the network. In Ayrshire we had the power going on and off over and over as trees or branches bounced the lines but it held together. Off, pause one second, try again, off, pause theee seconds, try again, back on. The longest we went without an interruption while under the red warning was about half an hour but ultimately it held with only very short interruptions.

If someone doesn’t look after their roof and it blows off, or the storm comes through and causes damage within the property, they won’t cover it as the poor maintenance is considered the root cause. If someone looks after their home and the storm causes damage, absolutely they will cover it, if only to avoid being taken to court.

A 1KWh domestic backup power is in the £500 region, sufficient to cope in a limited but safe and warm way for many hours. More who can afford that should do so , and repair teams can prioritise the greatest need. I have 3 1 KWh backup power, I chose to not wire into the house just have one for internet, one for living room and one to move around as required. I was working from home, using the internet, and didn't even know we had a power outage of 90 mins til I stopped working and heard all the property alarms as they lost power. Modest adaption can handle these weather issues, the key one being aware, stay home, and have backup/reserves for use by self or neighbours in need.

Yes, invested into EcoFlow and a small petrol generator to charge the EcoFlows. Rural populations are more prepared, I'd say. Wood stoves ftw.

Do you have big battery backups, then? How does it work? I have solar panels that direct the energy back into the grid but I've often pondered if I could divert some of their output to charge a battery for the power cuts. I imagine, though, even if it's not too difficult to charge a battery - keeping it charged is an issue.
@GeekfromYorkshire9 күн бұрын
You're financially better off storing excess solar than selling it. You're getting excess solar during the times when demand is the least they're buying electricity off you at less cost than you buying from in evening. You need a smart meter, a long period of usage data and do some maths. I will warn you that to cover these winter storms when you will have had little sun the hours before means you'll need a large battery. So one way is you get a modest battery and most days you use it in evening early morning consuming what solar gave you midday, if you have a full battery and excess solar then sell it, but when there's a severe weather warning just ensure your battery is full.
@GeekfromYorkshire9 күн бұрын
Batteries primarily pay for themselves by you using them during expensive energy periods like evening and if not full recharge then when power is cheap around 3am. All you do differently when a storm is due is instead of letting them drain in a morning or evening is not, just keep them full.

Obviously can’t avoid the damage but make sure you get cosy with your neighbors, never know when you’ll need their help and stock up on power banks, battery power torches / radio and a small gas burner for hot water with a insulated flask. £100 in total but a small price to pay for relative comfort if the power goes out. Key points about how ocean heat impacts weather: Heat absorption and distribution: Oceans absorb large amounts of solar radiation, storing heat which is then transferred to the atmosphere through evaporation, impacting air temperature and humidity levels. Ocean currents: Movements of ocean water, driven by temperature and salinity differences, transport heat from the equator towards the poles, influencing regional weather patterns. Storm formation: Warm ocean waters provide the energy needed for tropical storms like hurricanes to develop and intensify. Climate events like El Niño and La Niña: These large-scale climate patterns are significantly influenced by variations in ocean temperature, impacting weather patterns across the globe. do more research no brainer..

@@alistairbeveridge2753 At some point - they're going to remove their requirement to pay out for storm damage. Insurance works on a bad thing being less likely to happen than the insured predicts. I think, in certain parts of the UK, many insurance companies will no longer insure against flood damage - simply because it happens too frequently now. It's no longer a freak occurrence to be flooded.

It wouldn't really surprise me, if as predicted such Storms become much more frequent that Haulage companies will be telling drivers to park-up in secluded areas where both their cabs and trailers are somewhere out of the winds until the most powerful of them has passed. Obviously it would only really be in the Red weather warnings, but extreme caution should also be advised in the Amber weather warnings.

We didn't have any really bad winds, a little gusty nothing out of the ordinary, plenty of trucks were running the length of the UK, as usual high bridges were closed to high sided vehicles, as for the sensationalises and most are the news channels, this is the UK, we have had this unpredictable weather since we became an island. Islands are typically vulnerable to the quick changes in temperatures etc, as are coastal areas on large land masses, also the huge solar activities that have been going on for the last decade, shapes our weather, and at present they are exceptionally huge flares, anyone clicked on to the heavy northern lights everywhere yet??... Solar flares?..and let's not forget all those roads all the buildings, concrete, traffic lights, street lights etc, those thermals are off the chart, ask anyone who flies gliders where the lift is, if all the cars were electric nothing will change only another excuse would appear.

It's not about our welfare at all, if they cared about our welfare they'd stop the unnecessary wars, they wouldn't freeze pensioners in winter, they wouldn't undermine the health service by having people like Simon Stevens as the one time CEO of NHS England, he was a big cheese in a US Health insurance firm for ten years. Come on they want to bring citizens to their knees, stop family farms, and let the billionaires take over everything. I'm shadow banned on KZbin.
