Not until 3:59 do you hear that the PAP stands for Positive Axis Point. He never says what PSA is. Preferred Spin Axis. How can you make a video about the two main subjects and not mention what they stand for in the beginning, or at least 2 or 3 times during it. Everything about this video is awesome. The graphics and slow motion shots along with the explanation are perfect and I learned a lot. Bowling ball layout uses quite a few acronyms so it would help if you at least said what they stand for. But I will end with saying thank you for a very informative 3 part pin buffer series which will help me quite a bit as I am about to have two balls drilled. You really wonder how much the pro shop guys know in detail about all the things going on with ball layout. Anyway, thanks again!!

Not to mention a lot of drillings use dual angle layouts instead, so a parameter comparison would be nice. Symmetrical balls do not even have a distinct PSA

@@coopergates9680 with a symmetric core, the PSA ends up in the thumbhole, so the PSA-to-PAP doesn't matter in those types of balls. This is the reason why the drilling angle doesn't matter on a symmetric ball.

Great instruction. I like to get better at everything I do and always prefer an Asym. I actually just got my first sym ball and notice a big difference.

I'm a bit confused as to what Alex means when he says the marker on the PaP "lines up" with the other marker? Also, exactly and how do you determine where to put the second marker? I understand its 3in away in the direction of migration but does the mean 3in toward the bow-tie of the track flare? Thank you Storm and Alex for these videos very educational and informative

When the balls are released in the videos, they are initially rotating around the positive axix point (PAP). As the balls go down the lane and flare, they "tip" so that the axis point they are rotating around is constantly changing (migrating), and eventually, the 2nd marker becomes the axis point, or "lines up."
@brandonferris8934
@brandonferris8934 4 жыл бұрын
Knowing exactly where to put the 2nd marker would be hard, I think, for us mortals, even when we more or less understand this stuff. You have to know what the migration path of the axis will be for each layout. You can see the lines between the PAPs and the 2nd markers at certain points in the videos, and their shapes and directions depend heavily on the layouts.

im really trying to understand these and im writing them down in the notebook that i got i wanna remember this to go back on when im getting a new ball

So for a speed-dominant player using an asymmetric ball, would you want to push the PSA-to-PAP more towards 2" to force the ball into an earlier roll? When I use PSA-to-PAP of 4", I see my ball still in the hook phase as it enters the pins. Maybe I need more surface to pull the breakpoint closer to the foul line?
@Eclipsed_Trix
@Eclipsed_Trix Жыл бұрын
You could go with say a 3 1/2 PSA to PAP in attempts to get that ball rolling earlier. But on an asymmetrical ball a PSA to PAP of 4 in can be a bit aggressive at times. But surface is your quick and easy way to change the length of the skid phase. At the sacrifice of ball motion. If you wish to keep say an angular ball motion you would need to increase your PSA to PAP closer to 4in

on asymetrical ball do I place arc ruler in center of symbol or at 6.75 from pin in that arc, my absolute has psa marked 5.5 away from pin and my exotic gem is further away from pin , please advise

Can you find these details before buying a new ball?

I don't think you can get to the level of information seen in the videos here, but some of the ball manufacturers give you a set of specifications on their drilled (emphasis on DRILLED) balls if you follow one of their recommended layouts. With Radical, for example, you can look at the recommended layouts (NOTE: some ball companies use the dual angle layout system, instead of the pin buffer system. Instead of 4" x 4" x 2.5", you'd have 45 degrees x 4" x 45 degrees - the same three physical measurements expressed differently), and you can see what the total differential, intermediate differential, and 'performance' differential end up being after drilling, which tells you quite about about what kind of motion you can expect.

@@stormbowling I'm wondering about the PSA-PAP measurement for symmetric balls. When laying out symmetric balls do you measure PSA-PAP using the point 6.75" from the pin through the CG?

Is the PSA same as the CG?
@DonaldDump2024
@DonaldDump2024 5 жыл бұрын
Antoine Jeremiah Fabian No, not the same. Storm’s symmetrical drilling guide states that the PSA is 6 3/4” from the pin through the CG. Draw a 6 3/4” line from the pin through the CG to locate the PSA. www.bowlingthismonth.com/bowling-tips/storm-introduces-the-vector-layout-system/

@brandonferris8934 4 жыл бұрын
The PSA marker only appears on asymmetrical balls. You can make a mark 6 3/4" from the pin through the CG as indicated above, but when you lay out and drill a symmetrical ball, you actually only need to care about 2 of the 3 measurements - Pin to PSA and pin buffer. You can use whatever "PSA to PAP" distance you like - it won't matter motion-wise, since the real-world preferred spin axis of a symmetrical ball is always in the thumb.
